Had this one in my backlog forever and ready to finally tackle it. Any recommendations on which version to play first? GBA or 3DS?

Play the GBA original. Less homogenized.

GBA beats it for the beautiful art direction alone.

I think the GBA version pixel art is more appealing than the remaster, but other than that they're basically identical

Yeah, GBA versions visuals had more personality to them. Same with Bowser's Inside Story - DS version looked a lot better overall.

Never played the 3DS remake, but the original is top tier. Go for it.

Which is why they skipped partners in time to remake it

Haven't played the remake but I hear the added content isn't all that great. Other than that it seems very faithful to the original.

If I'd replay the game and had both I'd go for the 3DS version.

I don't think you can go wrong with either though. Fantastic game.
