The demo Tim gave during his public speech was running on a standard GeForce 6800 Ultra. The demos we gave behind closed doors, which included more than what was shown in public, were run on dual 512Mb GeForce 6800 Ultras using SLI. We chose to run at 1280x1024 because (a) that's the native resolution of the projector we rented and the tools demos always look way (because the fonts are crisper) when run at the projector's native resolution and (b) because SLI is friggin fast we could get excellent frame rates at high resolutions even through we've done very little optmization work.

Even with this early UNOPTIMIZED version of the engine we do these same demos on a Shuttle PC we carry around when we visit prospective licensees and they run just fine on a single 6800GT with an Athlon 64 3400 at 1024x768. A 6600GT could run these just as well at 800x600. A 6600 GT card will be pretty cheap by the time we ship a game with this tech.

So that Gears Of War demo was not running on Xenon or any other ATI graphics hardware, for that matter....

Although I expect the Xenon version will look just as good, I wonder how different it will look, all the same...

Well given Xenon will piss over the latest PC's when it launches for speed, whats to bitch about?

Nah, nothing really. I just figured it was running on a FX-55/6800 Ultra SLI rig. But really, I expect the final Xenon version to be a little better. But not by too much. I think they will have to optimize the engine a lot to get the RAM requirements down.

well considering they can't publicly show anything running on Xenon yet, it makes it a little difficult to show anything.

NDA and MS Legal will stop you from doing that.

Element: I don't suppose MS is changing their stance on a mouse this generation? If online games are gonna be matched by skill, I don't see any harm in this.

It will stay that way for only 6 months tops. *shrug*

I think his point was that the Xenon version is likely to look *better* than what we saw... since what we saw is from current gen PC's, and Xenon is based on the next gen of PC hardware. Not that the Xenon will continue to be better than PC's.

A lot more powerful GPU, a TON more powerful CPU and a lot more efficient architecture in terms of bandwidth constraints = :)
