I've always been really interested in Marvel comics, but as a kid I didn't really have the chance to buy a bunch of them. I started reading some about a year ago, and now I'm starting to hit a wall with finding the good stuff.

Stuff that I've read so far:

Ultimate Avengers I & II and The Ultimates (Liked it quite a bit, the art is brilliant and the characters involved are ones that I'm interested in)

Deadpool (old and new up to the latest issues, my favorite Marvel character by far)

Cable & Deadpool (Loved it, probably even more than Deadpool's own comics. Cable is a great character as well. I also liked the art better)

Planet Hulk (Pretty good, but I didn't really care about the Sakaar planet or whatever it's called and the weirdass people there. Hulk is still an interesting character and I liked the way he's "mistreated" all the time and how Hulk reacts to it)

World War Hulk & Aftersmash (Better than Planet Hulk, in my opinion, with everyone pitching in to beat Hulk and his buddies. I gotta say, though, that the story had way too many characters that nobody gives two flying fucks about involved, like Heroes for Hire. Come on.)

Civil War (Quite a good story, again too many of those insignificant puny wannabe-heroes involved.)

These are probably my favorite characters: Deadpool, Cable, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Black Bolt. Maybe some of the X-Men, as well.

If there's any stories involving these characters of extraordinary quality that I've missed, I'd appreciate some recommendations. I also like in Marvel comics how everyone are connected, and that's probably the appeal for me in WWH and Civil War, even though I've heard some bashing on these stories. If there's any other good stories that involve a lot of the big names bumping into each other, I could be interested.

Now, I gotta say that I don't really have the interest in digging into the really ancient stuff, mainly because of the art quality. It just makes the comics way less appealing, almost being "graphic novels".

Thanks to anyone who's willing to recommend me some stuff!

All Star Batman.

I'm sure both you and me know that this isn't Marvel, but thanks anyway :lol Maybe I'll look into the goddamn Batman at some point.

Damn, speaking of DC Comics. Green Lantern? Any good stuff?

Ultimate derail successful getting OP to lose allegiance.

I haven't read GL stuff, I'm starting to read the Blackest Night storyline that just began and picking up the GL tie-in issues to go with it. I think this would be a good place to start.

As far as Marvel goes, I pretty much just read ASM and Deadpool stuff. Old Man Logan by Mark Millar was great, looking forward to the giant issue conclusion.

I don't really mind actually if it's Marvel or DC, it's just that Marvel's characters are the ones that I love the most. I mean, who could resist Deadpool or the freaking norse god of thunder?

Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction
Secret Warriors by Jonathan Hickman
Thor by JMS
NEXTWAVE by Warren Ellis

Could you please elaborate?

Invincible Iron Man #1 - (May 2008 - present) <- this?

Which volume of Thor is that? Vol. 3 from July 2007? I'm sorry but I'm really new to this.

Secret Warriors also looks interesting, thanks!

Oh, and I stumbled upon a thing called Marvel Zombies. Yes/No?

For Invincible Iron Man, yes. Starts at number 1

For Thor, its with the Issue starting in September 2007, also starts at number 1

Never read Marvel Zombies

Captain America by Ed Brubaker
Daredevil by Brian Bendis
Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Bendis
Iron Man: Director of SHIELD by the Knaufs
Thunderbolts by Warren Ellis
Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis
Incredible Hercules by Fred Van Lente
Annihilation by Keith Giffen

And I'll also echo the Secret Warriors and and Nextwave recommendations.

As far as Green Lantern goes, everything starting from Rebirth is great. Well maybe not Secret Origins, but everything else is good and Blackest Night so far has been a lot of fun.

Marvel... yeah, I pretty much just read ASM so...

Marvel Zombies is fun, but there are better things out there. You seem to like the big events so maybe you should try out some of Secret Invasion and see how you like it. Amazing Spider-Man has been great. Get ASM #600. All the Captain America stuff by Brubaker and Epting has been great. You can get the trades but theres a lot of issues to catch up on whats up. You could read the summaries somewhere and just jump on Reborn. Bryan Hitch does the art for that. Hes the one that did the art for Ultimates

Read the Spider-Man trades starting with brand new day and if you aren't already read Ultimate Spider-Man, Young Avengers and Astonishing X-Men.

I dunno, Spider-Man seems like a pussy compared to the other guys, imho.

If you're asking for others to chip in their opinions, wouldn't it be a good idea to have an open mind? Ultimate Spiderman was pretty good back when I read like ten issues or so.

I'm having an open mind, but the way Spider-Man is presented in the stuff I've read so far, he just seems to be the underdog when comparing to the other guys. I might see if he's really "Amazing" in his own comic, then.

Anyway, currently I've gathered these to my to-do list from this thread:

Captain America (vol. 5) #1-50 (January, 2005 - May, 2009)

Invincible Iron Man #1 - (May 2008 - present)

Thor vol. 3 #1-12 '#588-599' (July 2007 - December 2008)

Secret Warriors

Green Lantern: Rebirth (no idea where to continue after this, is there something in between this and Blackest Night?)

Blackest Night

Secret Invasion (thanks for this, I liked the skrull invasion thing in the new Deadpool comic!)

Starting to look pretty nice! Thanks a bunch, guys.

If my Wikipedia skills are any good, it seems that Black Bolt doesn't have his own stories? That's a shame. I'd love to read what he's thinking, considering he isn't really the most talkative guy around :lol

Daredevil has been the most consistently excellent super hero book this decade. Yeah, I know, Daredevil is hard to get excited about. Just read it, starting with the stuff by Bendis.

You should probably read Runaways. It's a book about teen super heroes with supervillain parents. It's really good.

As for X-Men, read Astonishing, the stuff by Whedon. Some people will tell you to read New X-Men by Morrison. You should ignore them. It's all right stuff but the art is really terrible a lot of the time, and it's pretty generic Morrison stuff. So if you like him, sure read it. But the Whedon stuff is more accessible, and the art is leagues better.

If you're interested in the Hulk, I'd recommend you check out the one shot titled: Hulk:Gray. The art is done by Tim Sale and it's a really nice story about the more humane side of Bruce Banner. Even though you're not that interested in Spiderman, I'd still recommend another one shot drawn by Tim Sale and written by Jeph Loeb, which is titled Spiderman:Blue if you're up for it. I'm not a big comic fan, but I found these two to be rather easy to get into and they're all really well written.

Secret Warriors is great, but it's kind of... tied in, I guess? What I'm saying is, you'll probably have to reference Wikipedia more than a few times reading it if you're just a casual fan.

As for Green Lantern, post-Rebirth, the only VITAL stories to read pre-Blackest Night are Sinestro Corps War Volumes 1 and 2, and Secret Origin. From there, you could probably jump into Blackest Night without too much trouble.

If you're a fan of Deadpool, odds are you're a fan of action/comedy comics, in which case Incredible Hercules would book to jump onto. I think the recent "Love and War" arc is in paperback - that'd be a solid place to start.

Captain Britan and MI-13 was also great, and is actually completely wrapped up. 15 issues and an Annual in all, and I think the first two trades are out.

And if you're a fan of the Sci-Fi/Action thing with Green Lantern, look no further than his Marvel doppleganger Nova. The latest volume by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning is awesome. Though be warned, once you start reading it, you'll probably start reading Guardians of the Galaxy, too. Abnett/Lanning kind of suck you in, and before you know it, you're reading everything they write.

Anywho, there's a lot of great stuff at both Marvel and DC, not to mention Image (Invincible might just be my favorite book at the moment, and everybody who reads Walking Dead is pretty much crazy about it) and elsewhere. Once you get a good feel for what writers and genres you like, you'll probably start branching out on your own.

Moon Knight has been consistently good since they brought it back.

Hmm, this character has completely missed my radar. Do you mean volume 4 from June 2006?

Thanks for recommending the Astonishing X-men, as well, Lazy vs Crazy.

Also thank you to Viewt for clearing up the Green Lantern bibliography and recommending Nova :D

Oh, right, I'll second Nextwave, since you like Deadpool. It's the same kind of absurdist humor. It's only twelve issues long and it's drawn by the best monthly artist working in comics today.

I loved Deadpool and Cable. One of my favourites too. I would recommend Lobo, kinda the same anti-hero themes if that's what you're into.

Read every issue of Ultimate Spiderman, then read them again. For Green Lantern, read the entire ongoing since Rebirth. It's only 30 some comics, all very good.

Yeah, but then he may as well read Green Lantern Corps too. I don't know, that's a lot to track down.
