Marvel Rebooted Alien Comics, Only Alien and Aliens Happened

Now that Disney owns Fox it means they also own the Alien and Predator licenses, there's a new Predator movie (Skull) and Noah Hawley is doing a FX on Hulu Alien series that's set on Earth between Alien and Aliens. Since Disney has the rights, that means Marvel makes the comics now instead of Dark Horse. They've rebooted the comics and now Alien and Aliens appear to be the only canon entries in the series based on what's released so far. Alien 3 is set immediately after Aliens, so that's obviously ignored. Alien Resurrection is 200 years later, so that's also easy to ignore.

This is the core "Alien" on-going series:

Then the Aliens Aftermath comic they did for the 35th anniversary where people return to Hadley's Hope:

I've read the first 5 issues, it's not bad. Salvador's art is hit and miss though. Story seems to be heading towards aliens unleashed on Earth.

There have only ever been two alien movies. Is this some multiverse madness by Disney to promote the MCU?
Pfft as if they could ruin two great movies by trying to make more but missing the point ?!? I mean come on.

Alien Ressurection still contains the dumbest scene in the franchise (which is saying a lot with the existence of Alien 3). Where one of the mercs, laden with weapons spots another weapon he can't possibly carry, detours off to pick it up and gets ambushed. I have to give Whedon a pass here as the whole of the movie is so badly directed.

It’s not a bad idea to just start from aliens. I honestly couldn’t stand how they kept trying to shoehorn in Ripley. I loved Ripley in Alien and Aliens, but she is not necessary. The Aliens Don’t have a personal grudge against her and want to track her down to the end of the galaxy.

A big part of the problem in Alien 3 and Alien 4 was trying to make a plot around her when they could literally have dropped the Aliens into a 100 different settings and had a great horror movie or action movie.

I'm retarded?
Unpopular opinion but Alien 4 >>>> Alien 3 because it was at least funny and nicer budget. Ofc it was meh compared to the first and second but Aliens 3 is garbage. As for Alien vs Aliens, Alien >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Aliens.

Got a feeling those sequels retconning Alien 3 and Ressurection could still happen, especially after news like this.
Having said that, i think Alien3 is a very underrated movie, but with Newt, Hicks, and Ripley herself dying in it, i can see why retconning it makes sense for the future of the franchise. Ressurction is just a terrible movie so fuck it.

Interesting, but will it be as good as the original Earth Hive novel? Hope so.

Also, hopefully this leads to some live action Alien film/TV show set on Earth. I want to see Xenomorphs take over the planet!

Alien 4 had that great scene where some xenos picked the weakest one to kill in order to melt out of the prison. It didn't want to die. That little flash of personality is about all we get from any normal xeno in the entire run.

Now if they can just get the Blonkamp move made right now before everybody dies that'd be great.

As of last year they're still letting Ridley Scott destroy the franchise with his prequels and still have the third prequel in development. Ridley Scott is the one who killed Blomkamp's movie (because he hates Aliens and the idea of a Queen).

Also, the Alien TV series on FX is being done by Noah Hawley; who made two little shows called Fargo and Legion. He also wrote a Doctor Doom series that was cancelled (due to Marvel Studios taking over Marvel TV), but it was apparently so good Kevin Feige met with Hawley. It's speculated some of what he did in the show might make it into whatever Marvel does to introduce Doom. His series was about a reporter hired by Lavertia to be its public voice as it's been isolated from the rest of the world for so long.

Chances are the series is going to be better than whatever shit prequel Ridley Scott is working on right now.

I don't hate the prequels as much as others. Prometheus especially. I don't understand why we couldn't have had both though. Let Ridley play in his fanfiction and let blonkamp make a proper sequel to Aliens.

The Prequels are shit because they're coming from the intention to RETCON Aliens and say it didn't exist.

Ridley Scott has ALWAYS hated the idea of the Alien Queen. His original idea was that humans get turned into the eggs after being cocooned (this is partially seen in the Director's Cut of Alien where Ripley finds Dallas). That's what Prometheus and Covenant are building to.

Set on Earth between Alien and Aliens.

Oh god. Now I'm hyped. Hopefully it'll be decent. I want to see a city infestation of Xenomorphs! Also, if it's a FX series, than means I'll be able to watch it on Disney plus!

The guy made two of FX's best shows (Fargo and Legion), so it's going to be good.

I know I will catch flak for this, but I think Aliens is pretty much garbage. At least compared to the first. Watching them back to back, makes Aliens feel like a Saturday morning cartoon.

I think it was a cool direction to take the franchise, because it's a different angle on the first. Doesn't pull through for me though.

Edit: Maybe "garbage" is going too far, but I don't like it.

Had no idea that Scott hated the idea of a queen, you learn something new everyday.
Given the insectile nature of the Aliens and their hives, I always assumed that a queen was part of the original storyline.
I wouldn't have minded seeing Scott's take on a direct sequel, but if Prometheus was any indication we ended up with a far superior product.

Seems to me he viewed them more as a corruption. So a single alien can sustain and self-perpetuate the "infection" with no need for a higher organization or structure. They aren't a "race" or "species" so much as a biological weapon. I can agree with that but fuck Prometheus and Convenant are dogshit all the same. Too much focus on AI IMHO, hopefully he gets all that shit out of his system on Raised by Wolves so his third sequel can have David in it but not be the protagonist AND antagonist simultaneously.

Seems to me the a lot of recent Aliens IP stuff is turning to the android content for exploration instead of new aliens or human conflict. A nice safe group to hate and kill in battle I guess.

In what sense? The characters didn't make dumb decisions(mostly) and Ripley revisiting an Alien setting with a lot more firepower seems logical.

I think Aliens was the smartest thing they could do, because it would be silly do another horror movie in the same vein as the first. You get an evil corporation, Space Marines, Guns, and an overwhelming Alien force.

My biggest issue is the way they treat xenomorphs. Seeing a whole pack of them get mowed down in the opening act deflates their sense of intimidation. Maybe it’s justified with the firepower, but in a story sense, it kills the tension in a big way for me.

The characters also come across rather goofy, which adds to the cartoonish feel.

I’m not calling it a bad movie by any means, but as a sequel to the original Alien, it falls flat on it’s face for me. At the same time, I like it conceptually. I like the idea that James took the horror concept and turned it into action. I mean, I like it in theory, at least.
I sort of think they should do slight genre-shifts with more sequels, when appropriate. Turn Predator into a horror movie, or Terminator back into one. Make “Joker 2” a borderline horror movie.

These are fun ideas to me, and I know Aliens is beloved, it’s just my personal thing.

I can’t blame them.

Alien 3 was okay. I was pissed they killed off Hicks and Newt in such an offhand way. If that was done this day and age there would be a Twitter meltdown. Also, time hasn’t done the cgi alien scenes any favours.

And as for Alien Resurrection, it’s like what Joel Schumacher did to the Batman movies.

Each to their own.

I personally think that not only is Aliens better than Alien, but I'd also consider it one of the greatest sequels of all time next to Godfather Part 2 and Terminator 2.
