The ice berg is 5000 sq km ~ 1930 sq miles.

The 'crack' is about 200 km (124 mi) in length and the iceberg is hanging on by a mere 20 km (12.4 mi).

Size comparison: 1/4th of Wales; about the same as the US state of Delaware

'soon' is within the next few months.

Previously, Larsen A and Larsen B collapsed in 1995 and 2002 respectively.

What if it floats up north quite far? Will it melt? Is that big enough to raise oceans enough for us to notice?
Scary.

Its already in the ocean so it won't have any effect on rising sea levels.

Pack ice melting and breaking off is worrisome as it shows a warming trend but it is the melting of the ice on the land and the subsequent flow into the sea that will cause the sea level rise.

And ice shelfs can buttress against ice sheets. Without them in the way, the glaciers flow a bit faster into the water and melt quicker. That's when it gets worse.

No this shelf has already displaced the water. What it means tho is there is no iceberg blocking land based glaciers from melting into the ocean which hasn't displaced the water yet.

can we setup some kinda law to force all climate change deniers to live in coastal cities? I mean, "if you say it's not happening, then you won't have anything to worry about right?". bonus points if we can put them all at Florida.

Count down until you're drinking your own piss, growing gills, and searching for the mythical "Dry Land".

"Shit's fake."

I sincerely hope that image is in future history books as an example of climate change denial and propaganda. Also that James Inhofe (and others like him) are forever named and shamed as a fuckwits that through their own denial of reality and greed destroyed the environment.

My favorite part about that was he then threw it at the senator that he was speaking to. It's not enough for him to think he's right, he needs to physically assault the person he thinks is wrong. Suddenly, it all made sense when the GOP presidential candidates back in 2008 were using 24 references. They think that's actual reality.

Yet people in America refuse to cut down excess and change their lifestyles.

"But the economy! My money!"

it might, or it might not float north quite far.

provided it floats north, it will melt.

and no. it is floating already, so if it melt,,, all the ice turns to water and will have no affect what so ever on the ocean level.

every year well over 5 million square kilometers of water- both on the north AND south poles, melt and refreeze (oppositely- so as ~5 million melts north, ~5 million freezes south)

we never notice. because the total sea ice coverage remains fairly static world wide, it just moves poles every 6 months as to which has more..

big ass iceberg though.
