Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has dropped out of elections for House Speaker, shocking Capitol Hill and raising questions about who can possibly lead the House Republican conference.

Republicans were to meet Thursday at noon to elect a new Speaker. Instead, they received the surprising news from McCarthy.

McCarthy dropped out of the race because he did not beleive he could reach the 218 votes needed in a public roll-call vote on the floor later this month to be elected Speaker, according to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who spoke to reporters after the GOP meeting adjourned.
Issa said McCarthy gave that message to his collegues, and that McCarthy did not believe he could unite the conference.
The House Freedom Caucus, a 40-plus group of conservative lawmakers, endorsed Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) on Thursday for the Speakership.

A third Republican, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah) — also had challenged McCarthy for the Speakership.

Neither Chaffetz nor Webster, however, were seen as having the support of McCarthy.

He screwed up by accidentally telling the truth about Hillary investigations. I'm sure that's not sitting well and would be a forever gold mine by being a speaker

I honestly don't understand this. Do the hold out Republicans think they can get a bipartisan vote for leader or something? What in the world? Dems are not going to vote for an Rep speaker...I mean that's insane
 
SO I guess he wasn't willing to make crazy promises to the teapublicans to get to 218? That's surprisingly refreshing.
 
And the circus act that is the modern GOP continues. Those Benghazi committee comments will be a gift that keeps on giving and might be a huge boon to Hillary if she gets the nom

Its amazing what one slip-up can do to burn the future career of a politician.

lol, I just read like 3 articles on Politico this morning about how he had this in the bag.

Dude paid the price with his Benghazi slip.
 
Oh crap that means there is a chance one of the ultra crazies who is just one step from wearing a Klan hood is going to be the next speaker.
 
Republicans always manage to make a show out of it. They're a major detriment to the country - and to the world at large - but at least they're entertaining, I guess.
 
Chaffetz is a dickhead. I watched a couple of his committee hearings in full. He is kinda funny though when he starts yelling.
 
Something else to add to this:

Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states, "The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers." Although the Constitution does not require the Speaker to be a Member of the House, all Speakers have been Members.

When a Congress convenes for the first time, each major party conference or caucus nominates a candidate for Speaker. Members customarily elect the Speaker by roll call vote. A Member usually votes for the candidate from his or her own party conference or caucus but can vote for anyone, whether that person has been nominated or not.

To be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes cast—which may be less than a majority of the full House because of vacancies, absentee Members, or Members who vote "present." If no candidate receives the majority of votes, the roll call is repeated until a majority is reached and the Speaker is elected.

What if they tried to capitalize on this "outsider" culture and make the speaker someone that isn't even in office?

I don't think anyone knows that's a possibility. Also, unless its Dick Cheney or something its gonna be a neutered position. Also I would feel uneasy that a solely appointed person is 3rd in line for the presidency
