Anyone else pick this up over the holidays? I had wanted to buy one myself. Thankfully, a friend of mine accidentally got shipped two, so he gave me the extra copy. Of course, like everyone else, I've seen the stuff on their website, but I was seriously impressed by the actual cable access show on the DVD. There are 5 episodes, about 20-30 minutes in length. As the story goes, the evil Dr. Poque has created the Mega 64, which puts players in the game. He "recruits" (read: imprisons) two game fanatics, Rocko and Derek, in an underground test chamber and forces them to beta-test the Mega64. There are other characters like Horatio, Poque's "gangsta" roommate, Marcus the token annoying puppet and Poque's right-hand man, and, of course, Sean, another gamer imprisoned in the underground chamber who controls the e-mail system.
Though I'd always heard things about the cable access show, its amazing how well they actually put the show together. Yeah, its low-budget, but its low-budget in a way that it honestly doesn't matter and actually enhances the feel of the show. Both my friend and I noticed that the show has a striking resemblance to Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Even the setup of the characters (evil scientist + dumb assistant imprisons guy(s) alone in an underground chamber/space satellite and forces them to watch movies/play video games). The parody is similar and the story sections in-between skits are totally remniscent of MST.
On top of all of that, the stories they come up with are actually pretty cool for a cable access show and it does come off as entertaining and funny. If you've only seen the stuff on their website, you're missing a lot: Super Dodge Ball parody, River City Ransom parody, The Dreamcast Rap, Extreme Graphing (XXX, Y), the rest of the Metal Gear Solid skit, and so on.
I mean, for a cable access show, they really put a lot of effort into it. G4TechTV should pick them up and actually pay them to do this. Maybe the channel would actually be worth watching then.
I can only assume they are planning to do more episodes, though. Perhaps once the DVD sells. They are clearly doing more skits, as they've already done a few for EGM and are currently doing a Splinter Cell parody for the SC website.
The DVD features commentary on all episodes (pretty entertaining, too), a Making Of video, and a few deleted scenes. Apparently there are some easter eggs on the discs, but I don't know how to access them.
I think anyone interested in video game parody or who liked the videos they posted on the website should give the DVD a shot. I got it for free, but I would've gladly paid the money to buy it. These guys have some talent.
