Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction -- The Thread

Mercenaries just nails the war-torn, anarchic country thing. The big battle already happened, and now you're scrambling around in the aftermath.

And calling in Stealth Bomber Airstrikes just never, ever gets old. Ever.

any hope of a PC version? getting both this and RE4 will tax my wallet heavily.. need an excuse to wait on it a bit ;)

The game is sold out everywhere. I called 2 EB's and 2 Gamestops at 4pm yesterday, all sold out for both PS2 and Xbox. I didnt think Best Buy would have it yet since they usually get games 2-3 days after the game specialty shops but i went anyways last night and they were just putting them out and picked one up for Xbox. THey had about 40-50 copies of each version. I went to Best Buy about and hour ago to pick one up for my brother since he wanted it and they are sold out already :( I had to drive almost an hour to another Best Buy where i managed to pick up one of the last five ps2 copies they had left for him.

Great game also. :D Actually managed to pull me away from World of Warcraft all of last night. :P Too bad no multiplayer. Co-Op would have been sweet. :(

Whoo, just picked up the demo tonight. It is fun. And since I couldn't decide between RE4 and Mercenaries, I think I'll just get both :)

Rented the game yesterday (time to buy!) and I don't think it's normal to have a constant grin on your face, but there it is. Had a big rocket battle against an NK listening post and it was just insane. Explosions everywhere, energy dipping to the single digits, and the final strike was when I chained a rocket attack at a person into a barrel and it blew up a jeep that was next to several other barrels making it go sky high. Then another NK trooper was aiming rockets at me; almost bit the dust but the jeep that caught air LANDED IN FRONT OF THE ROCKET FUCK YES.

Then I sniped him and went to the Mafia for some Smirnoff and a contract.

That wasn't even a regular mission, fuck.

When I got one of the cards a camera man was filming so I did what I would do in real life.
I butted him with my AK cuffed him up and capped him!
No one gets away with watching me do my dirt!

Anyone use indy jones yet? He probably isn't even voices by Harrison Ford.
Hopefully we also get Han Solo!
To bad they Han probably doesn't use star wars weapons, To bad indy probaby doesn't have a whip.
Are they even confirmed I have yet to see one picture!!!

Exactly mat I knew that shit was purely speculation!

Matlock respect points +50 for liking the type of games that I like.
PSY-OPS ROCKS!!

Man, this game is like buttah'!
I'm torn between finding time to play GR2 on Live and playing Mercenaries.
Then there's the girlfriend, with her constant cries for attention.....

Wait until you have a wife. I get the evil eye as soon as she hears the Halo 2 theme. :/

Had a great session with this game last night. Pretty incredible, and I give it props for creating the atmosphere of "no one knew this could happen" just like GTA.

Best San Andreas like moment: Large battle is occuring next to a mountain that has nothing to do with me (on my way to fulfill a contract). One of the helicopters is taken out dumping bodies along the way landing in front of my vehicle. Was just like witnessing the plane crashes in SA but with better crash graphics.

Worst Vice City like moment: Me and my motley crew of merc helpers accidently bail a HumVee into the water....I CANT SWIM!!!

I shall add to the props this game is getting. There hasn't been a game that has grabbed my attention span like this, where I am constantly thinking about it. I opened it and only was able to play for 2 hours, but I can see the vast potential in the game. There is so much to do on the side, away from the missions. The enemy AI isn't the worst, but it also isn't the best. But it works well with a game, as enemies won't just stand there and try to not avoid the rockets you shoot at them. I am floored by the graphics on it. This game was easily worth the 50 bucks.

All Pandemic has to do it make some cookie cutter sequels with a few more weapons, different environments (such as Iraq, Columbia, Snow) And I will glad pay the 50 for any sequels, and that is only after 2 hours of impressions. I used to love the "Strike" series on the 16 bit systems and am very, very happy it has made a triumphant comback.

I can easily see myself playing this game for hundreds of hours...

Well, I'm about halfway through the diamond deck and I gotta say I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed with every other game that doesn't use the havoc engine. I also tested the theory that any man made structure in this game can be destroyed. I called in a bunker buster on some bridges, I figured there's no way you can break those since they're you're only means of getting to the other side. I was wrong, both the train and car bridges can be blown to bits. I found that gunship support is good to take down choppers.

haha, there's few things better than going on a crazy tear against an entire faction, trying to stay alive, setting C4 in front of all their buildings and getting demo drops. It's amazing taking a whole city apart. Army of One indeed.

Carl Weathers is in the game, by the way.

"Let me tell you a little story about acting. I was doing this Showtime movie, Hot Ice with Anne Archer, never once touched my per diem. I'd go to Craft Service, get some raw veggies, bacon, Cup-A-Soup... baby, I got a stew going."

I've been playing for 2 hours and this game is fucking awesome. I wish the teammate ai was smarter(The mission were you have to rescue the spy, he wouldnt get in the damn car). I love calling air strikes on buildings. Can you blow up bridges?

Voice actor list:

Matthias Nilsson - Peter Stormare
Jennifer Mui - Jennifer Hale
Chris Jacobs - Phil LaMarr
Fiona Taylor - Amy Lee
Colonel Samuel Garrett - Carl Weathers
Agent Mitchell Buford - Bruce McGill
Sergei Voronov - Chris Cox
Colonel Zhou Peng - James Hong
Captain Kai Leu - George Cheung
Adrianna Livington - Moira Quirk
Josef Yurinov - Charles Denniss
ExOps Executive - David W. Collins

Outside of that, there's some VA that also work reporter/soldier/pilot roles and some additional voices that are uncredited with a specific character.

Well damn. I am just kicking the shit out of that demo, and it's great. I can't imagine what will happen if they don't have it in tomorrow.

Well, I can. I'll just get RE4 instead of both.

...but if they're both out.

:o

Yes, you can blow up bridges:

"I called in a bunker buster on some bridges, I figured there's no way you can break those since they're you're only means of getting to the other side. I was wrong, both the train and car bridges can be blown to bits."

Last night i had to escort a reporter to film some combat action, i made it there and got caught up in the conflict, then bankrupted myself by calling in airstrikes.

My manwitch!

This game is indeed awesome. I decided to take a different route for the first mission than straight ahead, but after I C4'ed a gate, I ended up in a restricted area and got bombed to death. I can see plenty of experimentation and stories similar to GTA coming from this.

The only complaint I have is that I rolled a vehicle and the AI team mates sat in there talking to me as if nothing was wrong, sitting perfectly upright.

I unlocked some new skins today. Han Solo is bad ass. Too bad you cant use his blaster pistol :( Too bad you cant use ANY pistols. Mercs need their pistols. :p

If the Mercenaries games continue and the devs get really creative its going to be awesome as hell. All the time im playing this game im thinking "I wish i could do this" or "I wish I could do that" and tha tmakes me sad for a minute but then happy because if there is Mercenaries 2 I might be able to do those things in a sequel. I love this game so much. GOTY 2005 and its going to be hard to top for me.

The Ace of Clubs mission is fucking hardcore. I need to re-strategize my assauilt on his tower, but the rest of it is decently challenging as well...even if you do jack a tank.

What happens after that? Do you go on to use another character and try to take down guys from the diamond, hearts, spades decks? Or can you choose to keep the same character. Plus, does the map open up at all?

I'll let you know once I beat it. :-X

Another run tomorrow, hopefully I can figure it out. Pretty cool how the guy has a island fortress that they have to shuttle you out to. :lol

I cant see an option to choose another character after (accidentally) killing the ace of clubs (which kinda sucks).

I was trying to subdue him but i kept getting shot before i could tie him up and on the third gun butt to the face he just died.....pussy.

I love just arresting random civillians on the street and just leaving them on the floor all rip-tied up :lol

That contract took five tries.
Airstrikes levelled the city, but I wasn't expecting the choppers when the Ace came out. Ended up running my ass across the map- with 20 life left- scrambling for the anti-air missile launcher I left near the starting point. It took some serious discipline to not kill the ace out of spite after that :D

You keep the same character, and move on to the next set of cards. The factions all have new missions for you. As far as I can tell, the map changes only in the sense of who controls what and where the 'hotspots' are. You don't move to a new map, etc...at least, not after moving on from the Clubs. Still, it stays fresh because the faction conflicts seem to change, which affects things more than you'd think.

Edit:
Just read over at Qt3 that after beating the Aces in the first two decks, you DO get a new overland map. I can't confirm this, however.

Don't forget ''Destroy All Humans'', another GTA-clone being developed by Pandemic Studios.

Kill/Capture all 52 of the deck (though it's not required, each mission gives you intel on where various cards are....you can go after the Ace of Spades without capturing/killing all the cards below him).

I guess I was the only one who didn't have to much trouble with this mission. I used the sniper rifle to take out all of the gaurds from a distance and only had to deal with one tank that I destroyed with an RPG. When I took down the tower I got lucky and the Ace ran right to me so it wasn't to hard to take him down. When the helicopters came after me I don't know what happened, but something destroyed them for me. I think it might have been AN fighters who just happened to fly over at that time but I'm not sure... it certainly made it a lot easier.

Funny thing was when I took down the last jammer in the wooded area, I used C4 to blow it up not noticing there was a gaurd I forgot to kill. My gun was empty and when I was trying to reload a table flew through the air from a secondary explosion caused by the C4 and killed him.

The hardest time I have had was when I was taking out one of the lower cards (I don't remember which). I don't know if I got unlucky or the game glitched but after I knocked him down, six North Korean helecopters showed up and the only weapon I had was my M4 carbine. I took two of them out by shooting the pilots while running around like crazy. Luckily there was a crate of med packs in the area. I hijacked the third helicopter and took down the 4th and 5th helicopters. The 6th one rammed into me killing both of us. Luckily the card was still tied up after getting back from the medical area. This game is freaking awesome.

This is what I'm really enjoying about the game, the sense of dynamism. It works against you occasionally, but that only feels fair.

I just nailed the Jack of Diamonds- holy crap that was a trip. I blew through nearly a million bucks calling down airstrikes, levelling everything in sight.

Cruise Missile strikes are fun

First Ace mission completed: my runthrough--

Nailed everyone in the initial firefight, grabbed the anti-air rocket, leaving me with an AA rocket and an assault rifle. Grabbed a jeep and drove around until I found a tank. Pegged the guy in the gunner's seat, hopped in, and just busted everything up other than the one placement on the dirt road behind the tower. When I took it down to the LZ to clear it, those damn helis raped me...so I hop out, fire off a couple of AA rockets, one of the wreckages drops on two of the soldiers stationed there. I then called some clusters in on 'em, pretty damn nice.

Ran the APC I jacked from the enemy filled with friendlies into enemy territory, destroyed the AA placement on that side, then drove my APC with friendlies right below some trees...called in the bunker buster from the back (no rocket placements in the back, thank god), and watched as the place went down. Somehow, I got hurt a little by the explosion....heh.

But then, I took down the Ace, delivered him into the chopper, and got away just as the support troops for the NK were arriving at the back of the building.

To sum it up: on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, while being chased by ninjas and helicopters. And the ninjas are on fire.

Man, the first Ace mission was easy for me once I figured out how to take advantage of the world around me.
First off I took out one of the signal jammers with C4, then I jacked a helicopter, and went back to the drop zone. Once I was disguised as a NK, I went and took out another one with the lock-on missile, went back to the DZ, disguised as a NK again, went back and got the last one and high tailed it out of there before getting shot down by a anti-air missile. Landed on top of a building, called in an airstrike on the Hwangbo tower, disguised myself again and landed right next to Hangbo himself and cuffed his ass. After than I called in extraction, but there was a chopper in the air trying to take it out...thank god he didn't fire any missiles or else it would have been game over. It was relatively easy this way, probably the easiest way of doing it.

I picked it up when I got RE4 today. I put an hour or so in. It's good, but I'm still getting the hand of how everything works.

wait until u reach the middle of the deck, the entire playzone changes to another region, and u can see new weaponry, specially the apache helicopters

Wow the missions get much harder after the first ace mission.

Also i wish there was some instant way of getting around (airlift or something) driving around everywhere was fun at first but it's getting old now :-/

I hate the GTA series, but am intrigued by this game. I have a PS2, not an Xbox. I loved Freedom Fighters (Cube.)

Should I get Mercenaries, and what are the differences between the 2 versions?

Matlock's opinion doesn't count, because I played through most of Psy-Ops and it was far from anything special. Just a really shitty shooter with 1 or 2 really clever ideas.

Thanks.

I was just about to say the same thing. The second suit is hard as hell. Both the SK and AF missions I'm stuck on are completely brutal. In the SK mission
you have to break through the NK "Black Gate" and destroy all of their anti-air guns within a time limit (before 25,000 dead, actually), and after you do you THEN have to destroy a massive anti-air gun but you're signal jammed, I can't find the signal jammers anywhere and there's no way this thing is blowing up with C4 or RPGs or tank cannons. And this is still within the time limit and respawning NK bunkers all over the place.
Evil.

I think the only difference is the standard difference, (graphics, load times, etc), and maybe the secret unlockable characters. But I think you can get both in either game.

It's a good game, but I'm not too far into the story or anything to really give a solid review of it. It's sort of taking a backseat to RE4 until I feel like playing it specifically, or when I want my heartrate to slow back down.
