Hey GAF I started a new job recently and I'm looking for a bag to carry my stuff in. I'm kind of over backpacks so I was thinking a briefcase or messenger bag thing. I work in consulting so I'll be traveling a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hard to go wrong with Manhattan Portage.

Bought one of their messenger bags in 2007 and it's still basically good as new (replaced a plastic buckle last year). Insane durability.

leather or bust.

I have a fossil Jackson
And another that is distressed leather.

Mission Workshop (American made and sourced) has sleek, high-quality bags.

This Filson (American made and sourced) messenger bag is beautiful and has amazing build quality.

Tucker & Bloom (American made and sourced) has quality messenger bags that are more casual and come in a variety of styles and colors.

This Harveys bag (American made) I know nothing about, but the company makes good products.

Of any messenger bags I've seen in the thread so far, your best bets are the Mission Workshop bags or the Filson (which is, apparently, a Brooks Brothers exclusive).

If you want to look for a bargain, try checking Marshall's or T.J. Maxx. I got my $300 MSRP Calvin Klein leather messenger bag for $70 on clearance there a few years ago.

Timbuk2 bags are among the best if you're looking for something not so expensive. Mine has been sturdy and held together like a champ for years

Sorry to hijack the thread, but has anyone seen (or know the name of, if it's a specific type I don't know about) more 'vertical', skinnier messenger bags? Something probably not wide enough to fit a laptop, but maybe a tablet?

My fiancee had this old one that got narrower towards the top (sort of like a boxier tear-drop shape?) but it finally got worn out and I've never seen anything like it anywhere. Wanted to try and pick one up for her birthday if they exist...

Edit: Like a vertical version of this:

I really like my Timbuk2 and Chrome bags. I like the Chrome one a bit better when cycling, and the Timbuk2 a little better when on foot or transit. The Chrome one has pretty impressive water resistance.

I stick with Fossil's bag collection.

I haven't gotten the replacement yet, gets here on Saturday, but if it's like my current one it's got nearly 2 feet of extendability to play with.

Damn, that's impressive.

If it's not too much trouble, can you drop me a PM when you get our replacement and let me know if it's still as good as your old one?

It probably will be, but sometimes they undergo changes to cheaper materials and lower quality manufacturing to save costs which really impacts overall quality.

Yeah sure. I'm definitely gonna scrutinize it to make sure I like it.

I recently purchased a bag from Navali. It's pretty nice quality and, for the price, I don't think it can be beat.

My next bag will be a Killspencer.

I find most of them look too much like bookbags or like things a literal courier would use. The shapes and materials just seem pretty garbage in general to me, including a lot of what was recommended in this thread (no offence!)

Right now I'm using this one:

The components are nothing special and it occasionally squeaks (I'd definitely switch out the fake brass stuff in a heartbeat if I could), but I like the combination of the canvas and the distressed leather. Fits a decent amount of stuff but also is pretty flat when nothing is in it. The zipper is nice. I get compliments on it occasionally.

I have a Rummy messenger bag from Mission Workshop, their stuff is pricey but built to last; their products will probably outlast 80% of the other brands mentioned here. A solidly-built yet comfortable bag strap is paramount and MW's is the best in the business IMO.
