Recently I was viewing the bans list, and what do you know, our good friend Skyn3t has received his final ban. Often times I've wanted to discuss a recent ban, and typically I would just go to the thread containing the last post by the user in question. I figured we could probably use a thread to discuss forum related topics: bans, users, policies, technical questions, suggestions, etc. If it's related to the forum or users and you can't find an appropriate thread, post here!

So as for Skyn3t, I was just curious what caused the perma ban this time. He was previously banned for having a lewd avatar (I'm going to go ahead and assume mods will be ok with me posting this behind a spoiler tag)

Very classy lol. Thanks to LegendOfKage LegendOfKage for providing some information:

I didn't want to derail the thread or discuss a ban in a thread not devoted to the topic, but some of you were wondering, and I think I know what happened. Skyn3t once posted a thread devoted to interracial porn in off topic, and it was locked by mods who told him not to post about porn in general, but they'd be okay if the topic was discussed on the community forum. If I remember correctly, at least, that's what happened. Right before he was banned, he posted a poll in the main off topic forum asking what people thought of porn.

The post didn't contain anything NSFW (unless it was added later), but he was clearly ignoring the requests of moderators, which would go right along with the official reason he was banned.

Pretty understandable ban, IMO. The post was deleted right after he was banned, which makes it hard to tell for everyone else, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened. I hope that helps clear things up.

I don't really understand why porn discussion is unfit for Off Topic, but alright, he was basically testing the mods so he got the boot.

Also I'm curious how he got his tag, he's only been here like 6 months. What's a guy gotta do to get a tag in this place?

Goddamn, they got LukeSkywater LukeSkywater again lol (and apparently this affects user tagging? His name isn't showing up Edit: wait now it is)

I like his posts generally.

I'd like to link to a specific post, but essentially all of your contributions lately are riddled with aggression and ire. Please relax, and enjoy the holidays.

Soz in advance, but that pic in the spoiler should get you a pokeavag tag, but u presume. & I presume, fuck grammar. He/she not self aware, so why hate on non-sentients, they don't know.

I would think if we were going to discuss bans publicly, we'd likely just use this thread: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/neogaf-ban-review-justice-project-off-topic-edition.1463407

I just sent a PM about the skyn3t thing because people were asking about it, and I happened to have seen something that a lot of people probably didn't. I'd also suggest AT LEAST posting a NSFW warning before that spoiler, but even that might not be enough. A description seems just as good as an explanation.

Skyn3t didn't do just one thing wrong to get banned. As is stated on the ban page, staff had conversed with him privately on numerous occasions trying to help him understand why many of his posts were inappropriate for this forum. Many of us actually liked him, but we can't to play favorites and allow preferred members to just do whatever they want. Skyn3t simply had no filter at all. Sadly that makes him ill suited to civil discussion.

As to why porn discussion isn't welcome here: read the ToS. Members as low as 13 years old are here, lurkers can be even lower. I should hope that you agree that it's not appropriate to discuss porn with and in front of children.

I just figured that was specifically about old Gaf bans. Good point about the NSFW, will do.

Edit: Oh, it was removed lol.

Yeah I can respect that, often times I forget we have users that young here.

I'm curious as to why the age limit of 13 was selected. Was it arbitrary? I don't see what value a 13 year old would add to the discussions on GAF. They're free to lurk as it's a publicly accessible website, but in terms of membership, is there any reason for it to not be 18+?

I suppose that it's kind of related, but I like how if you check out the recent visitors it's Google, Bing, and another bot just gobbling up everything that we post.

Overlord Evilore himself joined gaf at such an age and now he owns neogaf. I think that's a perfect example of how young members can interact, learn and then blossom into prominent figures on these forums.

Now that I think about it, when I joined Gamefaqs way back in the late 90's, that was also the age restriction for joining their forums.

There are special privacy laws for 13 year old's in America so I'm pretty sure that's just a Xenforo default.

I made the assumption that Skyn3t's username meant "skinnt" as in the slang meaning broke, or "skinned."

I learned it meant Skynet as in Terminator too late man, too late.

Am I correct in thinking that this just says what must be done if children between 13 and 18 are allowed to visit your site? What if you don't want them visiting? Would it require a pop-up like porn sites?

Yeah you'd need a hardline age gate, like that or what Steam does for M rated games.

I’ve noticed temp bans get removed from the ban history - was there any discussion to keeping them there even after they expire? Might be able to see a pattern of bans if/when a poster gets permed.

13 is a pretty significant number in the occult. I'm not saying it means anything as far as age gating goes, I'm just saying ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED.

Interesting. Somehow I always figured a thread for talking about specific bans would be one of those 'unwritten' no-nos, but I guess that's a mental holdover from the atmosphere of Old GAF :messenger_grinning_sweat:

The age gate discussion is thought-provoking, since many of us can probably think back to our early foruming days and realise that we started pretty early. I doubt I was contributing anything of real value to the discussion at the tender age of 13 though.

As for Skyn3t, I'm surprised it took as long as it did for him to get permed. I can enjoy an entertaining shitposter as much as the next guy, but not if most of their posts are so low effort that they aren't actually funny.
Plus the whole 'testing the mods' thing- if it were up to me you'd get one or two shots before being told to sling your hook, let alone however many he got over the last few months.

LukeSkywater's is deserved as well, dude is a big ball of negativity using GAF as an outlet.
Of course, I'd be lying if I claimed to never have posted angry, but sometimes you just gotta keep it in check and Ctrl+A Backspace that shit before you hit the post button and subject everyone else to it.

Many of us actually liked him, but we can't to play favorites and allow preferred members to just do whatever they want.
Naturally I don't have the context that the mod team does, but from an outside perspective I'd say there's an argument to be made that favourites were already played to a certain degree given that he was elevated to local celeb status with a tag and tolerated for so long.

That would explain why there are so many perms accumulating on the first page. I looked at it today and thought the mods had gone on a purge :messenger_open_mouth:

I'd hazard a guess at it being a measure to protect temp-banned members from being account-stalked after the fact by other users looking for ammo to use in an argument?

Can't blame them for having favourites, but as long as they aren't treating them differently that's no issue. But I can't imagine why he was a favourite lol. Seriously I have no idea what got him his tag.

Not sure if you know, but tags do not mean you are well liked. Usually it is cheeky jab at that user. Just look at Killer's tag.

Eh, they seem like community in-jokes, which I would view as a positive, unless it's outright insulting which I'm not sure any are.

We actually considered leaving temp-banned members on the ban list, but we didn't want everyone who was banned temporarily (sometimes even just for a few days for minor infractions) to then be stigmatized with their own Scarlet B. Like you said, we didn't want people going all DetectiveGAF on a user and to try and use that as leverage in an argument or as a way of saying "This user is more right than that user, because that user has been banned 3 times." Not all bans are equal, and not all bans are for the same reasons, so giving them equal weight (which we figured would happen if they were left in the public log) would be unfair to everyone.

That depends on the tag. As Nymphae Nymphae mentioned, the negative ones we see these days are closer to in-jokes, and way less savage than some of the stuff the old guard handed out. One poster (who has since been un-tagged) used to have one along the lines of "warning: this post may contain disingenuous arguments designed to confuse and irritate you" displayed above every single post they made. Brutal.

Not that I'm advocating for the return of sick owns in tag form mind you, but point being that a cheeky jab can be worn as a badge of pride if it's an exclusive thing awarded to members that 'stand out' (for better or worse). And there's certainly no shortage of people that want a tag.

There used to be someone with the tag “Wanks to Trannies”. That caused a bit of a shitstorm when trans issues started to take over around 2012-2013.

Maybe it was this guy?

By his count, he's had more than 1,000 sex partners -- but only one of those was actually human.

Smith, 63, is a "mechaphile," the term for someone sexually attracted to planes, trains and automobiles.

Oh, and helicopters too. He once had a quickie with a copter used in the TV series "Airwolf."

Was it the guy who posted a screenshot from his computer with TrannySurprise.com open in a browser window, without realizing it?

No idea, can’t remember. All I remember is someone popping in one day and complaining that it was a slur like the N word and questioning the comparison.

Hi guys, Skyn3t here. Created this account to find out if I can get my old one back, but it's not possible. Seeing people discussing my permaban is really, uhm, heartwarming. Even if some of you are probably glad I'm not around. So, I'd like to thank you all for gaming discussion, tolerating my lame jokes in Off-Topic and all around being awesome. As for my recent shitpost storm and other shit, just blame it on my new dosage of antidepressant drugs. Those pills can mess with your mood, when you up the dose. I'll truely miss GAF, this fuckin beautiful alt-right, toxic male gamer echo chamber :D.

Mods, please perm this account
