warning - spoilers in this thread regarding MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3, with basic story discussion of MG1 & MG2. Don't worry about spoiler tags. If you don't want to accidently read details of MGS3 (the best of the series, imo) because you are waiting for Subsistence, proceed with caution. I don't want to say "get out" because there are 4 other games that deserve serious discussion.
First off, here is the best, most comprehensive Metal Gear plot summary/analysis that I can find:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/metal_gear_solid_13_plot_char.txt
I read the entire thing in the course of a couple hours and it really helped me put some of the cause & effect events together.
I'm gay for the Metal Gear franchise. Criticisms are fine, I have a few of my own, but if you are here to just troll and say Splinter Cell is better, lol snake is old in MGS4 lol, or whatever other oh-so-whitty joke you want to recycle, here is not the place. Go start a "MGS is for gay people who like to play gay games gay gay" for all I care, I'll stay out. This thread is for some serious storyline discussion/analysis.
Yes, I know some of the subplots are odd at times (mostly in MGS2), but the overarching storyline, branching chronologically from MGS3, through MG1, MG2, MGS1 and then MGS2 is unparalleled in the history of videogames, imo, and I think Snake Eater could be made almost directly to a movie and would be better than 90% of the drivel currently being green-lighted by Hollywood. The story of MGS4 is more attractive to me right now than the graphics - I want to see what happens to Solid Snake and the Patriots!
Quick background:
I played the NES port of Metal Gear as a young lad and enjoyed it despite not understanding the storyline at the time. MGS1 was one of the first PS1 games I remember enjoying, and boy was it a good one. The "... Mr. President" thing sent me into a emotional tailspin for days (hey, I was only like 12 or 13). MGS2 was a headtrip, but I loved it anyway. I could have done without the "Otacon slept with his step-mom" subplot and some of the Jack/Rose codec rambling, but overall it was a showpiece of the PS2 and still is among the best on the system. MGS3 is my personal Game of the Generation. Many around GAF share my feelings. I thought of myself a much more mature gamer before I started MGS3, but damn the ending sent me over the edge, much more so than the relatively tame MGS1 ending. I even got choked up at the gravesite scene.
Obviously, my #1 next-gen priority is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. We have all seen the TGS trailer and know how amazing the graphics are (and so early in development, with ~1 year left, according to Kojima at TGS), but like I said, I'm actually more interested in seeing how everything comes together.
I'm eagerly looking forward to Subsistence, even though I've beaten MGS3 a couple times already and am currently bouncing between MGS1, 2 and 3. Being able to play officially translated versions of Metal Gear 1 & 2 will be great. While many seem to dismiss them, both (especially MG2) have alot of great story developments. I'd love to see a Metal Gear Liquid, or a Metal Gear Solidus, as the back-stories are definately worth persuing, in my opinion.
I have a bunch of questions, but I'll start with my main one - What is the deal with the Patriots by the end of MGS2? The gamefaqs link has some ideas, but even he is unsure (as Kojima really hasn't made it clear). From MGS3, we know how the Philosophers/Patriots came about, but it seems that now that the Wisemen are long dead and the 3 factions have splintered apart, "The Patriots" now takes the form of an AI construct, which the author of the gamefaqs summary seems to feel is now a guideline, but is it? Are "The Patriots" still a real group of people, just a decision-making AI (although insanely complex), or somewhere in the middle?
One last quick thing - Revolver Ocelot is the greatest antagonist in gaming. No one but the biological son of the Boss could be worthy of being Snake's nemesis (whether Naked or Solid).
e: I know we've had all sorts of MGS/MGS4 threads, but I searched and couldn't find anything related to the overarching story, which is obviously the focus of this thread. Any questions about the story in any of the titles are welcome here.
