Meteos and Nintendo DS Downloadable Demos

So yesterday after work I went to Yurakucho's Bic Camera and downloaded the Meteos demo. First I'd like to say that this game has suddently jumped up into my top 10 most anticipated games. I spent alot of time with Lumines and I seem to be enjoying Meteos much more! Even though the final game is going to be quite expensive around $48US I'm going to pick it up on launch day.

Downloadable games seems to be an awesome idea. I hope Sony quickly embraces the idea and gets setups put into stores with PSP demos.

As I arrived at the store PSPs had just arrived and people were buying a fresh batch. The interesting thing is, nearly everyone in line to pick up a PSP stopped, whipped out their DS and downloaded one of the two DS game demos that were available.

I know this was only one store on one night but it seems there is alot of overlap between PSP and DS buyers. Maybe Nintendo really did create a 3rd pillar. Maybe there is now a market for a high end portable, wacky DS like device, and low end handheld....

Anyways, anyone else got the demo? How are you doing in it so far. The gameplay is pretty fast and furious and much more hectic than any puzzler I've played in recent memory.
 
I can't wait until they get the demo thing going outside of Japan.

What was the other available demo?

The thread is about Meteos and DS downloads.

I only included the PSP/DS crossover thing because I noticed it. Wouldn't have mentioned it if 8 out of the 10 people buying a PSP or who had just got PSP games weren't also downloading DS demos.

I would take this stunning scientific revelation into consideration. I'll pack it behind rolleyes, thirdpillarlinehookandsinker and allsystemshavecrossoverfanbases.

I keed. I just hate these whole "I saw this with my own eyes so MAYBE X is true!" threads.

That said, I am super, SUPER excited about Meteos. It's fastly eeking up my top 20 most wanted games list.

Any videos? Sounds like a puzzle game but I'm not sure.

I don't really think it's a matter of getting this or that "in gear." Sony is just focusing on other aspects first - mainly, online. They already have games online at launch and some games will feature downloadable content (Wipeout Pure). So I think after they get a firm online infrastructure running they'll probably start eekin' out the demos.

That's what I have been trying to figure out. the videos wont help you.

It basically looks like a block dropping game, and from what I could tell of the video, all of a sudden the blocks just start taking off in rows as if rocket powered, I'm assuming it's to do with colour matching, then on the top screen things blow up. Oh and all of this moves at a million miles an hour.

I still want it despite being horribly confused.
 
Downloadable demos ??? What are you talking about ? How do I do it ? Do you play on the DS directly ?? I'm confused.

Basically, you have to create rocket matches to be able to carry away blocks off the screen. However, if the weight is too heavy above the rockets it won't be able to take off so then you must create more rockets.
 
One of those pages makes it look like you can play with the stylus OR the d-pad and a-button in a tetris-attack type interface.

Definately interesting.

and how do you create matches and how do you lose.

Click this link to see a description of the service and this link to seea list of shops in Japan that have the service.

Just step up the the kiosk and put your DS in download mode. Then wait a few seconds and a list of available game demos pop up. Then you can download. Currently this service is Japan only. NOA is working on a plan for America. According to some rumor sites some are pushing to bypass the kiosk idea for the US and allow direct downloads from the internet via wireless.

Screw the store downloads. They should both make a nice online network with downloadable demos and other stuff. On PSP it should be even more trivial as you can just copy files over to the memory stick, si you don't even need a wifi connection.

From what I hear Nintendo and Sony and some 3rd parties want to control the lifetime of demos. Hence loading to memory only. There's a chance some PSP demos will be memory store only and not loadable from Memory Stick. That way the demo only lasts until you turn the unit off/change the game/do something else (media playback) with your unit.

Hmm, that sounds like a pretty damn stupid idea, considering that you can just re-downlaod the demo once you've got it erased from memory...

This is a very cool idea. I hope that they really put that up for anyone that has a home wireless network.

The point is to make it inconvenient and make the user consider buying the actual game instead of horsing around with the demo all the time I think.

I guess it's the same principle as all the demos on the OPM discs that boot you out to main menu as soon as you die or after 2 minutes. Sure, you can just re-enter the demo and endure some painful PS2 load-times again, but I usually don't.

I hate those with a passion. Even worse are the ones that force you to watch a lengthy slide-show of screenshots after you die and then boot you out to the menu.

They should allow you to save the demos. Even better, they should follow the example of the best demo ever made, Capcom vs. SNK 2 on one of those Xbox discs. That demo really showed off the game well.
 
Yeah I downloaded the demo at the nearby mall in my place last night.

I can see it being addictive, but I'm not yet sure if I really like it.
Maybe I'll be enlightened one day and figure out the magic of the game, just like Lumines did to me...
 
Can demos be downloaded from another DS? Like if I dloaded it at at a store could a buddy dload the demo from me?
 
So... is there anyone in Japan willing to buy a second DS, download the demo to it, fly back to the US, and spread it like Johnny Appleseed? i'm on the east coast, PM me for more details.
 
The ability to toss blocks up into one that's currently boosted is totally badass. I've mastered the technique and I'm able to make HUGE sets lift off by increasing the boost by tossing a well timed brick up into a space.

Man! Meteos is totally awesome. Gameplay is frantic and it lets you be sooo creative with how you make sets of blocks boost off the screen!


If I were reviewing it as a demo I'd give it a 9.5.

I can't wait to see and play the full game!

Unforunately co-worker's DS is busted. He's waiting to get a new color one. My girlfriend will bring her DS when she comes over. I'll test then. Has anyone else been able to test?


BTW - What's the max score anyone that has the demo has got? Or maximum amount of time yuo can go?

I'm getting alot better and now can usually play a single game the whole train trip from my office to my house (15 minutes) without losing. Odd thing is, I'm not so great at making huge groups of blocks blast off so my scores are pretty mediocre...
 
im looking forward to making sweet love to this demo by the end of the month.

anyways, you guys that have played it already. can you confirm that this is the best sound you've heard come out of the DS?

Sounds pretty darn nice. A few DS games have nice sound and I often play with crappy headphones with the noise of the train buzzing in the background....besides that, I'm pretty spoiled by PSP, Ridge Racers in particular (Lumines is pretty nifty too)

so what's the deal? im expecting the best sounding DS game out of this one.

The effects and music is pretty good although the overall quality of the sound seems maybe a bit hampered...Some of the effects seem to have a bit of a compressed feel to them. It may have something to do with the fact that it's a demo.

So overall I'd have to say no it's not heads and tails above everything else on DS. To my ears its of average quality in comparison to the other DS games I've played.
 
that's a damn shame if you're right.

please guys who have also played this, argue against him and tell me Mizuguchi hasn't fucked up when it comes to sound. i always expect the best from him in that area.
