Michael Mann is making Heat 2

What could POSSIBLY cost 170 mill?

The original was 60 mill, had some of the biggest stars of the day, the most SPECTACULAR gunfight ever put to film....what else does it need?

Maybe shooting on location in LA is just insane these days?
Hundred million to improve LA for the film perhaps? The rest on actors…

😂

Soz meant the money he thinks it could make.

You're probably right - he has plenty of- but more of it? Who says no?

Yeah I mean things are a little more expensive 30 years later bro lol

It'll probably be another near 3 hour film also.

I don't know why people are that worried, the reason he's doing this is because the book is supposed to be great and allegedly would make a great screenplay.

I guess a ton of set dressing and CGI because it's basically a period piece at this point.

Just when I think Hollywood couldn't be any more creatively bankrupt...it discovers new depths.

Also: stop trying to make Adam Driver happen.

I rewatched Heat an hour ago and it's amazing. But I really don't need any remake or sequel to it. It's better if Mann just does more original work. Or he could make a The Town-esque movie together with Ben Affleck.

I bought the book and nothing can prepare for how bad it is. I never quit books once I start but I chunked it 100 pages or so in.
Late response - just reading through this thread, but: same. It's like half-ass Elmore Leonard without a sense of humor. Just: not good. Film is top 5 all-time for me. Heat 2 (the novel) is just: oof.

Heat 2 is generally a widely loved novel.
Again, apologies for years-later response, but: Errr...what?

The book got rave reviews a couple of years ago. I have it but never got round to it.

Think its both a prequel and a sequel.
So, this seems to be a thing, so: not doubting you on the existence of "rave reviews,' but I couldn't even get through half of the book. It is both a sequel and a prequel, but it's a total cash-in on lingering enthusiasm for the film, some decades later, and doesn't present an interesting story - in either the past or the future, relative to the narrative of the film. It's "What happened to Chris Shiherlis after he escaped and...would you like a not-so-great explanation as to why Neil is the way he is (or was)?"

This needs to die on the vine. I think I read a comment from Mann in the last three months or so in which he implied, "I've turned in a script, but now it's up to WB." Hopefully, WB does a nope. I love Mann, I love Heat (as mentioned: one of my favorite films), but part of the electricity of that film is the cast and you can't just recast Pacino, De Niro, and, especially, Kilmer - who, obviously, is dead and puts a "new Chris" into the bin of insulting his legacy.

Paraphrasing, but Mykelti Williamson as Drucker needs to have a conversation with whoever will potentially greenlight this thing: "You want out, this is out. You believe you have to kill this movie. That's right. You would have to. See, i if you don't kill this movie, you victimize all the moviegoers who loved the original film...because that film becomes a relic, demeaned by an inferior sequel. Nobody wants to see that because the story played itself out and the continuation of its narrative is unnecessary trash. Heat is...fucked for life. You know what that's like - 'cause you been there...etc., etc."

Trigged some real PTSD with this bump but agreed on all counts. It reads like what 14 year old me would have written for an edgy sequel. It was embarrassing.

Yeah, it looks like it reviewed well, but speaking as someone who holds Heat as his favorite film of all time, I didn't think the book was particularly good at all, especially Chris's storyline. Doubt I could be bothered to watch a screen adaptation.

Also, I didn't realize until reading the recent posts that Val Kilmer passed away just a few months ago. Damn. :(

Yeah not saying this movie is a good idea. Especially now Kilmer has passed.

I think everyone is in agreement that HEAT is an all time classic movie. It doesn't need a sequel. But neither did Blade Runner so you never know.

Likelihood of them fucking this up is very high.

The weird thing is that heat was a remake, of an earlier not very good Mann piece (karate kick through the window aside 😁)

With heat, he somehow refined and improved the idea into something far greater and epic than what came before. A better cast and larger budget clearly also helped. But the story, location and characters are what brought the magic. In my opinion

The book although had some good set pieces in it. But it felt hollow and small. Especially when compared to the great character work in heat. Like a fan fiction of what came next and before. (Another Han solo got his name moment, was my thoughts 😬🫣)

The book wasn't terrible. But a few fan moments/winks and some pretty decent sounding action beats aside. It could be a struggle to get a movie version to even sit close to how mind blowing heat is. The best I would think it somehow Mann does another la takedown, to heat transformation. But to be honest. I can't really see lightning striking twice (I can hope, I guess. 'Does ronin at the start of endgame teary pose' 😂)

Maybe one just to leave as a book. Truly call heat a one and done (why mess with greatness ?)

I could suggest a proper type (no streamer) mini series, starting with the heat story and going from there. They could spring back and forth in time to tell the whole thing, over maybe 2 or 3 series. Mann has form for that sort thing 😎. As the book had a lot going on, with at least 3 parallel stories going at the same time (the cop, the gangs history and the current/future story)

Yeah LA takedown I think it was called? Watched it back in the day.

That was a TV pilot, IIRC, that wasn't picked up so it got repackaged as a movie. Happened a lot back in the day. Tended to be TV "movie of the week" that had cool premise, good budget (for TV at the time), and then end in a very annoying "..more to come" vibe that of course was never followed up.
