So, one of the biggest selling points is out, and one of the other major attractions will now be made available in XP. Hmm. Why will we be wanting to upgrade to Longhorn again..?

BTW, I'm highly tempted to make a comparison between this and another Microsoft-related product (Fable), but I shall refrain :p

I'd rather just make the switch to OSX...

Because you hate having any real choice when it comes to hardware...? I like OS X, but I'm not willing to accept the limitations of having to buy Apple's hardware and no other.

Say what?

With the exception of the processor, none of the hardware in a G5 is really tied down to the system. The memory is standard, the drive interfaces are standard, and you've got the same nVidia and ATi chipsets available for the system, and it's got USB and Firewire for everything else. Where's the lack of choice?

Are they totally insane? Dropping WinFS, and providing Avalon and Indigo for XP users? Those are the three features that have been hyped the most. Additionally, WinXP 64-bit edition is still being worked on (here), so that won't be new with Longhorn either.

What's left?

I hope someone other than MS releases an OS till 2006 to crush longhorn. I know I'm dreaming but I'm still extremelly pissed with SP2. Three formats guys, THREE formats.

I like to think the ability to choose what case, processor and mobo (and therein chipset) I'm running in my system is pretty important. I like OS X and I definately like how Apple's machines look, but at the end of the day I prefer the more open nature of PC hardware. Frankly, I'd love to see a PC version of OS X and think that would really sell Linux/BSD as a consumer-level OS, although that'd probably be hard to pull off without some sort of built-in Windows app compatibility. That and, of course, Apple would never do it...

It is safe to buy it, safe it is not to use it.

Meh, for all the security complaints I hear about XP, I've never had any real problems with it at home or work. So long as you keep it updated, use a little common sense, and realize that the integrated firewall is a piece of shit, it's a pretty stable OS for gaming and whatever else it is you'd use a computer for. ;)

Hey I agree but what about those who don't know as much as you? Shouldn't the OS protect users instead of users trying to protect themselves for the OS? And yes it is stable, till you install SP2 that is.

To enthusiasts, sure, but to the mainstream, "Oh-Lookie-What-I-Just-Got-At-Best Buy!" computer buyer, they just want a computer that runs the stuff they need.

I think the people inclined to buy their PC stuff at Best Buy would be the same folks who'd just buy a Mac. ;) I've got nothing against Macs, as a setup-and-go computer, there's none better, still, to call them a 'mainstream' product is kind of erroneous.

Heh, I've yet to install SP2 on any of my XP boxes. In its SP1-state, XP does alright security-wise, and I think even beginner-level users can educate themselves pretty easily in terms of figuring out how to plug up the holes. Out of the box though, XP's security is by no means as tight as a drum and certainly Microsoft needs to work on that...or at least someone who can do it right.

Please don't use Yoda speak.

And my PC has been on Windows ME, which had been doing just fine the first three years. But I think it's suckage is now starting to burst through, with annoying results. So I need the change.

BTW, what's the best deal for an XP upgrade?

And WTF is SP2?

Service Pack 2. Collection of updates/"improvements" to XP. Source of many headaches.

If you could tolerate Windows ME you can tolarate everything. Hell you can even tolerate an OS exclusively made by me*.

*I don't know how to program.

:lol Honestly, it gave me little to no trouble the first three years...but the last few months I think it's been the cheif source of my troubles (well either that or there's some trojan on my HD fucking things up that I can't find).

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Why do OS's take so long to develop when they're built on existing tech/code?

Why do you want to upgrade it more often than every few years? Nevermind the havoc it'd play with application developers.

Also, the original scope of Longhorn was...big. Big enough that WinFS had to be scaled back a lot just to MAYBE meet the 2006 deadline.
