LOS ANGELES, April 8 (Reuters) - New games for Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) current Xbox video game console will debut through 2007, Microsoft said on Friday, even as it prepares for the expected imminent release of an Xbox successor.

While Microsoft has not committed to a release date for the new console, code-named "Xenon," the industry universally expects it sometime at the end of 2005.

In a release on developers who will make games for that next-generation hardware, the company said "Microsoft is fully committed to this (current) generation and gamers can expect an amazing pipeline of titles into 2007."

A Microsoft spokeswoman told Reuters that 2007 is not a hard stop, but rather a guideline for the last releases of new games developed for the Xbox. Microsoft has not said whether its next console will be compatible with the current Xbox.

New games for Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation continued to come out through late 2004, even though the successor PlayStation 2 made its debut in late 2000. The PS2 is backward compatible with the PSOne.

Microsoft said every major name in the publishing and development industries has committed to make games for the new console. More details are expected next month at E3, the industry trade show in Los Angeles

Bleed to there is no more blood to drain.

Good. Xbox still has a lot of untapped power left in it. It will serve as a good platform for smaller developers who do not have the resources for the HD ERA.

Heh, they have stopped Xbox production and Xbox360 won't be backwards compatible. If you thought the N64's last leg was painful....

Well yeah, there's going to be new Xbox games in 2007. EA is still releasing PSOne versions of Madden. :lol

COMING SOON TO XBOX(TM): Madden 2008, Cars The Game, Shrek 3: Red, White, and Green The Game, and Super Bubble Pop 2

This doesn't seem logical to me. With the next-gen software development underway, & the release of the XBX 360 around the corner, what studio would continue to develop for the XBX? They do not have anywhere close to the market saturation that the PS1 had, which made continued software production viable. MS in-house studios? Quick PC ports? '07 seems like a long time, even for late adopters of the XBX 360.

The greenlighting of any new internal and external first-party projects for XBOX was halted in the Spring last year. From that point onward, any new projects were either moved to or started on XBOX 360.

Therefore, all of this reference to new XBOX software through 2007 is strictly coming from 3rd parties. The question is, who?

They may "expect" the games, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll turn up. Remember the PSone?

The tools for making cross platform games on Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox are there. PS2 is going to be well supported so I presume third parties will continue to release Xbox versions as well as long as they sell reasonably. I think we'll see releases in 2007, but it won't be many.

i wonder if cross platform x1 to x2 live games would work? i mean both are pretty much pc architecture. x1 would be like playing on a min spec pc.

At what point did you recieve confirmation of this? As far as I've heard, (and until I hear confirmation one way or another) it's utter bullshit. This press release should give you a clue as well, shouldn't it? Then again, some people latch onto what they need to hear :)
Wasn't MS pretty quick at squashing the last negative rumor regarding their bastard stepchild, the Xbox? Until MS steps up to debunk the rumor of ending production of the Xbox, I'm going to keep right on thinking that's exactly what happened. This PR sounds like nothing more than some bullshit damage control where MS says that they expect support for the Xbox to reach into 2007. They sure don't have anything in development that's not planned to wrap up within the next few months so obviously they're speaking for 3rd party developers (which we all know plans change). MS also expected to hit the 100 million mark on Xboxes sold. Do you still believe that?

Did they ever officially announce that they wanted to hit 100 million Xboxes? Was it ever some sort of company goal? The only thing I've ever seen of this was one of the guys saying something like "the first 100 million are the hardest."

Watered down Xbox2 ports to Xbox

Wrong.

Watered down PS2 ports, which is exactly what we've gotten this generation. Nothing will change. Business as usual. As long as companies are making PS2 games, they'll do a quick Xbox port also. They've been working this business model for almost 4 years now.

Yeah, Seamus Blackley, Mr "Toy Story 2 graphics on Xbox" said 100 million Xboxen was the goal...

I think we will see Toy Story 2-quality graphics before we see 100 million Xboxen sold....

MS jumping up to squash rumors? Kind of a contradiction in terms there. Heck, Are we even talking about the same company ?

Microsoft's response to such things is always a firm 'no comment'. Pretty much goes for ANY unsubstatiated or substantiated rumors. Why? My guess is, because it merely opens the door for more speculation. And hell, wouldn't a press release declaring game production for the next two years be enough confirmation that the system will see some support? Fuck,I wonder if it would be idiotic to commit to ANYTHING right now, as far as manufacturing goes. The market is constantly changing, and their chief focus should rightly be the machine they're about to launch. I mean, Say the next system is a rousing success, and X360's fly off the shelves, and you've just committed millions in manufacturing a profit-absorbing last-gen console, possibly through contractual obligations with flextronics (or whoever makes 'em now). There are pros and cons to each strategy, and it would be pretty ignorant to think they're making decisions (especially pivotal ones like halting manufacturing) lightly. Even if they DO halt manufacturing, like any reasonably-intellegent company, they're going to try to achieve a balance between loss, profit, and demand; Three things, as far as Xbox 1 are concerned, will be subject to drastic change over the next year or so.

There are a few stories floating around this vast thing we call the Internet today that say the Xbox has been pulled from retailers. Furthermore, people are saying that we have “reached our targets and want to get ready for the next console.” Let me be perfectly clear: We are NOT pulling the Xbox from stores. Xbox consoles being in short supply since they are popular and stopping production are two VERY different issues. Don’t believe the mis-information that is filling your browser/inbox/rss feed.

This needs to be underlined ;-)

Exactly. If they weren't stopping production, he would have said that. This sounds more like a confirmation than a denial.
It isn't. And MS saying in their last official PR that they are counting on millions more xboxes to be sold, contributes to deny the rumor about MS having shut down xbox production.

Yeah, Seamus Blackley, Mr "Toy Story 2 graphics on Xbox" said 100 million Xboxen was the goal...

it was J.Allard and he said "The first three million sales are easy. It's the next 100 million that are tough."

Your memory is a bit corrupted, i suggest the use of a better brand: Samsung :)

Millions as in 2 millions. Learn to read PR.

I forgot that my Xbox will stop working once Xenon is released.

The fact is that your Xbox is going to burn the same moment a Xbox 360 is on sale, do you think that incident with the cables and Xboxs exploding was casual?

It might be the intention, but it's not going to be the reality. Maybe smaller devs will continue for a while, but I figure most will jump ship to the PS2 and GameCube until the PS3 hits if they don't want to develop for the Xbox 2.

we need the xboxes to still be in mass production(I want to get another copy of xbox, but only if its 100 or less), if XBOX 360 is not going to be backwards compatible. It would really help microsoft if the 360 was bc tho, since all these xbox game could be played on the 360, since there would be new ones being released all the time, while the first wave of 360 games settle in.

I say damage control because they said they stop producing the Xbox lately. Devellopers will have more interest in the Xbox2 and to produce cheap PS2 games (that will almost sold out by mistake - tks to fat userbase). Gamecube will not receive many games already in 2005 and it's gonna be the same situation for the Xbox through 2006.
