Missed opportunity that Stan Lee isn't the same character through out the MCU

He's actually playing the Chameleon. We the viewers are seeing through his disguises while the characters in the movies are not.

He is. He's clearly The Watcher.

kinda wish there was a bluray extra tying all the movies' stan lee somehow into a story.

He was a big rich dude in ironman, nearly died in incredible hulk, forgot what he was in ironman2, got fixed up at a hosiptal in new mexico, had a grandpa in WW2, went to new york for business during avengers, was a celebrity guest judge for that pagnant in IM3,

forgot what he was in thor 2, and lost everything in stocks and went to work as a museum guard in winter soldier.

I think its a good contrast. It would suck if it was just Stan Lee as Stan Lee everywhere. It's always a nice surprise to see the different roles he takes, it's what makes it special every time.

He is. He's clearly The Watcher.

...whoa

His cameos should have been more subtle, like Hitchcock in his movies. Something to really keep your eyes peeled for instead of hitting you over the head with a mallet with ‘Look! It’s motherfucking Stan Lee’ stamped on the side of it.

From wikipedia

Lee has had cameo appearances in many films based on Marvel characters that he created or co-created:

  • In X-Men (2000), Lee appears as a hotdog stand vendor on the beach when Senator Kelly emerges naked onshore after escaping from Magneto.
  • In Spider-Man (2002), he appeared during Spider-Man's first battle with the Green Goblin, pulling a little girl away from falling debris. In the DVD's deleted scenes, Lee plays a street vendor who tries to sell Peter Parker a pair of sunglasses "just like the X-Men wear."
  • In Daredevil (2003), as a child, Matt Murdock stops Lee from crossing the street and getting hit by a bus.
  • In Hulk (2003), he appears walking alongside former TV-series Hulk Lou Ferrigno in an early scene, both as security guards at Bruce Banner's lab. It was his first speaking role in a film based on one of his characters.
  • In Spider-Man 2 (2004), Lee pulls an innocent person away from danger during Spider-Man's first battle with Doctor Octopus. In a deleted scene that appears as an extra on the film's DVD release, Lee has another cameo, saying, "Look, Spider-Man stole that child's sneakers."
  • In Fantastic Four (2005), Lee appears for the first time as a character that he created for the comics, Willie Lumpkin, the mail carrier who greets the Fantastic Four as they enter the Baxter Building.
  • In X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Lee and Chris Claremont appear as two of Jean Grey's neighbors in the opening scenes set 20 years ago. Lee, credited as "Waterhose Man," is watering the lawn when Jean telekinetically redirects the water from the hose into the air.
  • In Spider-Man 3 (2007), Lee appears in a credited role as "Man in Times Square". He stands next to Peter Parker, both of them reading a news bulletin about Spider-Man, and commenting to Peter that, "You know, I guess one person can make a difference". He then says his catchphrase, "'Nuff said."
  • In Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Lee appears as himself at Reed Richards' and Susan Storm's first wedding, being turned away by a security guard for not being on the guest list. In Fantastic Four Annual #3 (1965), in which the couple married, Lee and Jack Kirby are similarly turned away.
  • In Iron Man (2008), Lee (credited as "Himself") appears at a gala cavorting with three blondes, where Tony Stark mistakes him for Hugh Hefner.[134] In the theatrical release of the film, Stark simply greets Lee as "Hef" and moves on; another version of the scene was filmed where Stark realizes his mistake, but Lee graciously responds, "That's okay, I get this all the time."[135]
  • In The Incredible Hulk (2008), Lee appears as a hapless citizen who accidentally ingests a soft drink mixed with Bruce Banner's blood, subsequently dropping it and leading to the discovery of Dr. Banner's location in a bottling plant in Brazil.
  • In Iron Man 2 (2010), during the Stark Expo, Lee, wearing suspenders and a red shirt and black and purple tie, is greeted by Tony Stark as "Larry King".
  • In Thor (2011), Lee appears among many people at the site where Thor's hammer Mjolnir lands on earth. He tears the bed off his pickup truck in an attempt to pull Mjolnir out of the ground with a chain and causes everyone in the scene to laugh by asking, "Did it work?".
  • In Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), this time portraying a general in World War II, who mistakes another man for Captain America/Steve Rogers, commenting, "I thought he'd be taller." This film is an exception considering Lee had nothing to do with the basic creation of the title character. However, Lee began his writing career in the character's original series where he created the idea of Captain America using his shield as a throwing weapon. Furthermore, he was responsible for reviving the character in the Silver Age of Comic Books and co-wrote most of the character's stories in The Avengers and his solo stories in that period.
  • In The Avengers (2012), Lee makes a cameo appearance as a random citizen in the park asked about the Avengers saving Manhattan. Lee's character responds, "Superheroes in New York? Give me a break", and then returns to his game of chess.[136] He also appears in a deleted scene, apparently as the same character: when a waitress flirts with Steve Rogers, he says to him, "Ask for her number, you moron!"[137]
  • In The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Lee makes a cameo as a librarian at Midtown Science High School, comically oblivious to the fight between Spider-Man and the Lizard happening behind him (a table nearly hits him as well) due to the fact that he is listening to classical music. He walks out of the library as the fight continues.[138]
  • In Iron Man 3 (2013), Lee makes a cameo as the beauty pageant judge that appears on a television monitor and happily gives one of the contestants a 10.[139]
  • In Thor: The Dark World (2013), Lee appears as a mental ward patient who loans his shoe to Erik Selvig for a demonstration about "the Convergence" in his delusions. When Selvig finishes and asks if anyone has questions, Lee says, "Uh, yes. Can I have my shoe back"?[140]
  • In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Lee plays a security guard at the Smithsonian Institution who fears he will be fired after Captain America steals his World War II uniform from an exhibit.
  • In The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Lee makes a cameo as a guest at Peter and Gwen's graduation.
  • Lee has confirmed he will have a role in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), saying he didn't understand the context of the scene but that it had to do with a "very pretty girl".

Lemme one up the Watcher suggestion and suggest that Stan Lee is The One Above All.

Or just a stranger on the bus, tryin' a make his way home.

Not having the watcher is another missed opportunity.

Random thoughts:

I have been thinking a lot about this. Uatu is technically FF, so that would make him fox right? But, AOS mentions the number 616 like almost every episode. Are they trying to say that the movie verse is 616? Are they acknowledging the other movies via a multi verse?

Exiles counts as X-men, wonder if we ever see something like that.

Who says he isn't the same guy?! Stan Lee is essentially God of the Marvel U, he is The One Above All.

That's completely fitting and It's a fun running easter egg/gag through the movies.

You know what that means: it's time to reboot the MCU and buy out the rest of the licenses. One universe and Stan Lee character to rule them all.

It's really hard to call Stan Lee's appearance in almost every marvel movie a missed opportunity. Dude is essentially the (co?)creator of the Marvel Universe, is 90-something and every one of his cameos has been funny/clever. These are already the greatest creator-cameos in fiction, so anything like "he's the same character throughout" would only be complimentary, not "a missed opportunity."

Lee not being in the movies at all would be a missed opportunity.

kinda wish there was a bluray extra tying all the movies' stan lee somehow into a story.

Forgetting the best cameo ever! TASM: The blissfully oblivious librarian listening to classical music as Pete and Connors tussled in the background.

Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko must not be forgotten,
yeah Stan Lee is the iconic patriarch of Marvel Comics but he didn't get there alone.

On a related note, Stan Lee has absolutely no shame when it comes to attaching his name to anything. I think that he'll accept any gig as long as it pays. His little bit on Comic Book Men was really embarrassing.

He won't be around forever. Giving him importance in the movies would just make things even more of a bummer for when he croaks.

Judging by that list it seems conceivable he could be the same character in every movie (besides the Captain America cameo)

Like half of them are in the same state anyway

Cameos range from great - even brilliant - to pure cringe-inducing.

I was just thinking about this. Either Stan Lee is some sort of renaissance man who does everything, or there are a ton of people in the Marvel universe who look like Stan Lee.
