X marks the Concept: Mitsubishi to show concept version of next-gen Lancer Evo at Tokyo show
AUTOWEEK
Posted Date: 9/28/05

Mitsubishi has plenty planned for the upcoming 39th Tokyo Motor Show, including the highly-anticipated world concept debut of its next-generation rally car.

The highlight of Mitsu's show stand will be Concept-X, which is basically the next-generation Lancer Evolution. The company will also show Concept-D:5, a go-anywhere, high-performance concept, a new-look Outlander and the new-age i minicar.

Concept-X is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four mated to a clutchless six-speed auto-manual transmission controlled by paddle shifters mounted on the steering column.

The frame has been significantly stiffened, while the use of aluminum in the hood, trunk lid, fenders, roof and front and rear door panels reduces weight. Reducing weight in the roof and upper parts of the body helps lower the center of gravity, while weight reduction in the doors, engine hood, and trunk reduces the moment of inertia for better steerability.

Suspension is MacPherson strut at the front and a multi-link at the rear.

The on-board multimedia system includes a high-definition liquid crystal monitor providing real-time display of vehicle and the all-wheel-drive system’s operating status while also displaying on-board navigation system maps and DVD audio controls. Rear seat passengers have their own liquid crystal display on the back of the front seats that allows them to share with the driver driving-related information and his/her fun-to-drive experience

That is just sweet. I've been waiting for pictures of the Lancer EVO or Lancer X since the sketches came out and it looks even better in the flesh (well metal, plastic, you get the idea). It's looks much better than the botched nosed job on the Impreza. :D

Yuck. Obviously the designers of the new Eclipse weren't involved.

Looks like they borrowed some of the designers from the Pontiac Aztek team. :lol

The WRX STi is hot now, too bad this looks like ass. I'm sure it'll perform great, but...yech. Mitsubishi is finished.

Edit: I think it's those headlights and that grey plastic nose that make it look so fcking cheap. Why grey plastic?! You want to make sure everyone knows it's plastic, right?

I don't like the looks of this vehicle, but this thing will perform like a monster. Too bad Mitsubishi is circling the drain.

6 speed clutchless manual? Mmmm...

I like it, though I would've definitely painted the center of the front bumper to match the body. At the very least it's a good thing they got fid of that stupid bumper triangle that holds the Mitsubishi sign in the current domestic model.

I wonder what changes they'd do before (if) it ever makes it to production? Hopefully nothing too drastic since it's already far better looking than the 06 STI. Then again, so are the Evo 9 and the 05 and down STIs..

Hmm.. first impression.. dont like it. Although I felt the same way with the new shaped WRX. It will grow on me Im sure. It does like pretty mean from the front though.

I prefer the look of the older models more, but this doesn't look bad. The grill in particular looks refreshingly different.

Clutchless sequential is sweet. Struts and multilink are cool. The fucking body? Pure fucking ass. That is one ugly piece of shit. Evo got WRXed, bad. Way to fuck up two of the coolest boy racers, Subaru and Mitsubishi. Just when you were about to bring in the fans, you are now gonna scare them away by outuglying the Americans. :( PEACE.

EDIT: ...and I demand a front-mount intercooler, dammit.

The front sorta reminds me of that Nissan Skyline concept shown a long time ago.

Well the only reason it reminded me was cause of the somewhat similar front grill....

that is pretty sweet looking. I see a lot of similar lines to the latest acuras in that car, like the TSX and TL.

The new Audi line is a better choice for similar front grills. Those feature the huge unnecessary black plastic section just like this concept. ;)

Yeah, it's the fact that it's so angular coupled with the body molding line that goes from the front, through both door handles and to the rear. That's all TL right there.

Yeah I guess it's not really all that similar, I saw the Skyline concept so long ago that it just reminded me of it. The Audi line does show more of a similarity.

For some reason the front doesn't bother me nearly as much as the rear. I'd still drive it though.

Same with the '06 (or '07, whatever) Impreza, despite being dismayed by the front grill. Doesn't seem to stick out as much on the WRC car though, probably due to all the decals providing a bit of balance.
