Rest in peace Prodigy

that genre of music has aged like milk.

Not as badly as stuff like Eminem or Girlbands from the 90s but up there. It's cringe

Definitely a nice album, but I don't dig every beat. But that's of course subjective.

Taj Mahal right now is my shit, love the beat and there's something about P's hook and laid back flow here. Rest in peace Prodigy for damn sure. I went to their show many years ago, it was awesome.

Against the World popped up on my apple music playlist the other day. It was ok but nothing great. What are the best tracks on the album?

Do you know if tracks with prodigy was done before he passed or did they "remix" it? I hate when its not authentic and albums are released when the other member is not there.

The sampling of Barber's Adagio for Strings is so sick they used it twice (Down for You / Love the Way).

Yeah, it's old people trying to be kids, it's embarrassing.

Rap age like trash. There is also something about growing up, because 99% of rap lyrics become really fucking childish when you are over 20. It's hard to listen to.

This is exactly my point and look at all the people in this thread defending it 😭

I looked at 50 cent's social account recently and seeing him try to cling on to his fame is painful.

That's rather shortsighted, I'm sorry.

Maybe some are like that? But the majority of adults music listeners are not. I'm 43 but I can absolutely just enjoy the music.

I put a game like Powerwash Simulator on after work or in the weekend, what have you, just relax and put music on and that can be music like this. I just enjoy good beats, I enjoy nice flows and there IS plenty of actual storytelling hiphop out there. Just because one enjoys listening to gangsta rap/reality rap doesn't mean they want to be like that or try to be like a kid again, though.

Wouldn't that kinda be the same as saying you want to be like Tony Montana because your favorite movie happens to be Scarface? Last year Eminem dropped a new album, the first single brought me back to when he actually was still interesting,as in entertaining with the fun, comedic tracks that are not to be taken seriously.

A week ago I went to see Obie Trice live, if Cypress Hill ever comes to my city again I will be there too. But what you're saying here is a bit silly, my dude, sorry.

Just enjoy it, or don't. I see nothing wrong with it.

There is nothing wrong with it, and not all rap is corny. But a lot of it, especially anything around gangsta rap, is impossible to listen to as you get older. I think it's similar to playing with action figures, it gets embarrassing to engage in as an adult.

yet you guys play video games which is looked as childish from many on the outside.

I'm 44 and I still think NWA's first two albums are awesome to listen to. Those are some great party tunes right there still. Same with classics such as The Chronic and Illmatic.

Some awful takes in here. I'll never understand people that outgrow music. Raffi? Sharon Lois and Bram? Sure, fine I get it. Anything else? Nope. I'll always like the bands and music I grew up listening to.

ITT: people that never liked hip hop say hip hop isn't good looking back.

There's no way in hell Nocty Nocty and kpopSuperstar kpopSuperstar ever liked the genre. They disliked a few tracks on the radio when they were swapping from one Slipknot CD to another (or whatever the fuck kpop was listening to before that genre blew up on the west) and carried that opinion with them forever. I know that for a fact, because hip hop covers a lot of ground and enough decade shifts that a blanket opinion means nothing.

Cmon now, I love me some Slipknot too. I just bought their latest CD

Imo 90's and early 2000 hiphop aged just fine. I feel like the last 10 years or so it went downhill. Or thats just me getting old lol.

As one of the few people on NeoGAF that actually lived in the mecca of hip-hop in its prime: I think it's perfectly fine to find that you've outgrown the genre. No need to get defensive and attempt to insult people with stereotypes.

I still enjoy listening to the music I grew up with but I can acknowledge that there's nothing of value in the lyrics as an adult. But put that shit on during a party and it's a different story lol

It's crazy to me that you were in NY in the 80s/90s and say there's nothing of value. I'm curious to know what you think does have value as an adult if that didn't do it for you!

In all honesty the thought did cross my mind when listening to this album that these guys have been rapping about killing people and shit for like 30 years now and that it's kinda silly if you look at it in a "walk of life" kind of way.

I listened to Mobb Deep when I was in college and now I'm married, bought a house, kid on the way and these fucking guys are still rapping about beef with their ops and being on the lookout for drive by's and hooking up with the homies.

Just about everyone finds the music they love between age 12 and 25. Whatever music you fall into during that time is probably what you'll like for the rest of your life. Age is irrelevant. Our emotions are at their peak and we are the most susceptible to influence at that time. Not everyone is passionate about music, but those that are generally have their tastes set by the time they're entering their late 20s.

I was 14 when Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral came out. It's one of my all time favorites. I just went to see NIN play in Dallas last month, and it was a sold out arena of people super hyped to see them. Amazing experience. Me being 45 was irrelevant. There were people there who were clearly 60+ and there were full on teenage goth girls in the whole cosplay outfit.

I have always appreciated hip-hop and rap with a strong sense of rhythm and rhetoric. Mobb Deep has always been in that camp, and the sampling is great. If you don't like the lyrical content, I get that aspect. I personally got lost with rap when the South got big in the early 2000s and rappers who were slurring their words all over the beat became popular. From an outsider perspective, it seemed like that eventually devolved into the mumble stuff of the early 2010s. That's where I became the stereotypical white guy saying "I hate this new rap music".
