so my friend got some new parts, and we are having a pain trying to get the machine up and running.

Here are the parts:
Coolmax 450w psu
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
2 x 512 PC3200
AMD 3200+ Winchester

So I already updated the bios from what I read that improves the compatablity). But now when I try to install Windows XP via boot, it will hang during SCSII controller search or just reboots during the search. I haven't even gotten to the format hard drive part yet.

I really have no idea. I'm getting the impression that DFI boards suck.

Anyone have any clues what would cause it to flake out like that?

So you have SCSI hard drives?

It would help to know a little more. Like SCSI Ids, CMOS settings. I don't know, you probably know more than I do but it just happens that I'm reading the SCSI chapter on this A+ book.

Are u installing Windows to a SATA Drive? If not, go in and disable the SATA Ports and anything else u wont be using. SATA/Raid IDE ports are grouped under SCSI in the bios.

no SATA or SCSII drives. that is just where it is dying.

One time windows setup freaked out over the RAM being set to shadow.

Well can you disable the SCSI and SATA in the BIOS? If that you haven't done that already. Maybe IRQ coflicts? Can you boot up with boot floppy? Just throwing ideas.
