Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

UPDATE: Demo is out and here is a small FAQ; remember to go through the digital manual on the home screen:

A friend just woke me up to tell me he sucks at the game.
Let me offer a FAQ for the OP before I go:

Q: I have no idea what I'm doing. How do I learn my moves?
Both demos have a digital manual. For the 3DS button, check on the home menu. For the Wii U, press the home key.

Q: What's a good weapon to start off with? My attacks are too slow!
Dual Swords and Long Sword are what you're looking for. You aren't locked into your weapon choice, so you can experiment once you've learned the enemy.

Q: How do I lock on?
There isn't any true lock on. However, when you go to an area where the monster is present, click their icon on the touch screen. Now pressing L will center the camera on the monster instead of centering behind the player.

Q: How do I know if I'm doing damage?
If you're hitting the monster, you should be doing damage.
Monster Hunter is largely about observation. If the monster staggers from the hit, if they limp away, if they start getting faster and stronger, you're probably doing alright.

Q: Why am I stuck to the floor after I attack?
In Monster Hunter, you can't attack recklessly if you want to succeed. Get in a couple of hits, then dodge away.
You can end most attacking animations early by using the B button.

Q: Can I kill the monster faster?
Sure. Making use of your items will speed things up a lot. Try to lure a monster into a trap and drop bombs beside it.
If your weapon seems to stop for a split second when you hit, you've hit a weak spot. Try to focus your attacks there.

Q: Are their only two attacks?
Melee weapons have several attacks. X, Y, X+Y, and R all perform different actions. You can also sometimes perform different actions as part of a combo, by while holding the stick down while pressing the button, or by holding down the button. Look at the digital manual for details.

Q: Why can't I do X with the touchpad? Why can't the shoulder buttons do X?
Maybe they can! You can customize the touchscreen for both versions if the full game. This allows you to access items at a touch, resize the touchscreen D-pad, or remove the HUD from your screen completely. You can also customize the function of the ZL and ZR buttons with the Wii U's controllers.

Q: Is there a quest timer in the full version?
The timer is generally set for 50 minutes. You should have some time to gather items or cook meat as well as complete your objective.
There are also quests that eliminate the time limit. You can also freely visit the Deserted Island map (seen in the demo's Hard mission) without any fear of a time limit or being defeated.

Q: Is there any more to this game?
In the full game, you can customize most things. You can forge and upgrade your weapons and armour. You can gather items and choose the ones you want. Through your equipment, you can also equip special skills.

Q: Is this whole game just about fighting one monster?
The bulk of the game's missions are like this, but not all. Hunting multiple monsters and gathering items are also common objectives. In later missions, powerful monsters may appear; you must decide whether to fight them or flee.
Much of the game also consists of creating and customizing your equipment.

Q: I suck at this game!
Don't worry about it. Practice makes perfect.

I'd also just add: Keep playing and try different characters. You'll find out about the items and techniques and get used to cycling through them, taking breaks from monsters and generally just learning more about the game. We're told the demo isn't too welcoming, the game itself will draw you in and not just throw you into the action in the way we see here.

----------------------------------
Been in loads of the multiple Monster Hunter threads, but thought it deserved its own thread so people 'know'.

A demo releases on 21st February for Wii U and 3DS. The Wii U version supports Voice Chat for online multiplayer via the GamePad microphone so you don't have to let go of the controller to communicate with fellow players. If you prefer Text Chat you can use the Wii U GamePad touch-screen or a USB keyboard.

Edit:
Btw, it will feature Lagombi and Plesioth.

Will totally check out the demo on the 3DS. I don't have a Wii U yet (and frankly don't see the point as of right now), but I do love me some Monster Hunter, so I'm almost assuredly getting this on 3DS.
Pity about the online play though.

It has voice chat? O_o

The Wii version did so I'm not surprised. I think they've confirmed all of its features that were cut from the 3DS version (voice chat, keyboard support).

And this is great to hear, I'm looking forward to trying out the 3DS version, my portable library is tiny and this would definitely be a good time killer. I'm interested in trying the Wii U version if I get a chance, but I don't plan on buying the console for a while so its not too high on my list.

So it is possible to have Voice Chat with just the controller. Weren't people yelling at each other on a thread not to long ago about this? Anyway these are great news!

So, as someone who has not yet played a Monster Hunter: Should I get the Wii U or 3DS release?

...or both because of some sort of interconnectivity?

I don't think there's any tunnelling software that works with the 3DS, due to Nintendo using a funky wireless standard for local play.

If you want online play, you gotta buy the Wii U version.

So it looks like I have to wait until MH4 :'( sigh. I won't have anyone to play MH3U with aside from a friend who lives like an hour away.

You'd have to be literally insane to pick the 3DS version up over U. Dual analog and online play, enough said.

Wii U version for the online co-op. That way you can learn from more experienced players. They might get annoyed if you're sucky newb, but whatever.

The MH community is generally a pretty forgiving one when it comes to new players, so I don't think he's got much to worry about there.

Well, I can see 3DS being preferable for anyone who either has a local MH group they play with frequently and are looking to upgrade to MH3, and either don't have Wii Us yet or (quite understandably I'd imagine) prefer to play in physical group together, or if for some reason you prefer only playing the SP content all by yourself WITH portability being something you absolutely must have.

I'm considering both, but thanks to Ni No Kuni Wizard's Edition coming back in stock for a moment I'll likely sacrifice the 3DS version. Wanted to double dip, but having it on the go isn't THAT important.

I'll be getting the 3DS version because the WiiU is not a convincing purchase. There has to be some way to play online, right? Even PSP had online.

GEEKED

I'm going to brush off the cobwebs and get my groove back on the 3DS first. Apparently doing offline quests now increases Hunter Rank, which it didnt before and this is handy if you dont want to be stuck doing the early monsters again with beginner players when you eventually go online.

You can share your save between the two versions, by the way. The Wii U version is definitely better for online play alone, and it also has better graphics and controls. If you like the game enough to want a portable version, you can pick up the 3DS version later on and continue your save.

Do you mean just the Wii U Pro Controller? That is what people were having a commotion about, due to the Wii U Pro Controller not having a mic jack and needing to have the Wii U Gamepad with you to use a mic.

Get a stand I guess, and so long as a table's nearby I guess it won't be an issue. Or just play on the gamepad for this, I'd probably use the CC Pro over the Pro Controller if I used anything else anyway.

Great news! Will definitely get the demo. Never played any of the previous games but it looks amazing and fun from the videos I have seen.

So they did include voice chat after all, nice. Now if only Capcom could include off-tv play, then I'd have zero feature complaints with this enhanced port. Anyway, Monster Hunter is amazingly fun. Capcom will have my money.
