Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I just downloaded the demo on the 3DS eshop. This is my first time ever playing a Monster Hunter game and I have to say that it's pretty fun. I started with easy so that I could get a feel for it, and I picked the horn weapon. It looked like a giant club to me, so I figured "why not?"

I was pretty damn slow, but I managed to "get it" as I attacked the smaller enemies before heading toward the rabbit. I appreciated the way they showed that he was growing weaker through his animations, as that kept me on edge throughout our fight. Even when I saw that he was visibly fatigued, I still had to keep on my toes - it was hard for me to feel too confident in my abilities as he kept pummeling me while he was slobbering and limping. I do feel confident in my ability to say that I am probably nowhere near as elegant or efficient in my hunting as some of the likely expert hunters in this thread. :P

I guess Demon's Souls and Dark Souls take after this series a bit, yeah? They feel a lot like this when it comes to the weapon play, in that there will be massive consequences for not taking care to compensate for your weapon, how it hinders your maneuverability, and the way the enemy attacks.

Gonna try Plesioth now. Wish me luck.

Trying a bow when I never used the weapon before was a bad idea. I have no idea how to use the thing effectively.

Anyway, it's still MH Tri, I still love it but damn I got rusty.

Lagombi's attacks are hilarious. I start a combo with him dead in front of me, he does that attack that can best be described as a donut, completely around me and ending up in the end of my combo and getting staggered. So fun.

3DS demo is nice, and the lock-on works well. Only thing I found wanting were the fonts. I've only played FU before this, but limb damage seems a lot more obvious here, which I like.

My first time playing a MH game of any kind. I'm not sure what I think of it yet, other than it looks great on the 3DS.

Is the lock on automatic? I keep reading about a lock on and I'm thinking something like z targeting in Zelda, but here I have lock on turned on. (The monsters icon on the bottom screen has a scope over its image) but I still have to tap L to whip the camera around. Is that how it is?

Yep. If you had it stuck on a monster at all times you'd struggle to target the head, tail, arms, etc. and that's a big part of MH. Chopping off tails is damn satisfying.

MAN! I'm still fucking great with the hammer!!

a little stiff after this looking time since tri, but I got the first Monster down in like five minutes.

So if anybody wants a hammer in his team. I'm here!

I'm having 0 problems controlling this on 3DS, the "lock on" option is amazing, I kinda regret ordering the circle pad pro now, but I guess it will be great when going between WiiU and 3DS versions, so eh.

woot.

my hammer skills from Tri are still intact.

beat the first monster without breaking a sweat, now to check out some of these new weapon classes

how's the bow? better or worse than the bowgun in terms of support/damage output?

I got pretty handy with the bowgun in tri always keeping monsters paintballed, cranking out the status effects, and learning monster's elemental weaknesses and carrying the appropriate ammo types.

I give up. Can't beat Plesioth in twenty minutes underwater on the 3DS. In 10 it goes well, in 11 it goes horribly. Going to go boot up the Wii U demo and see how I fare with dual analogue.

After playing the 3DS demo I'm kind of upset I IMPORTED a Circle Pad Pro LL from Japan for this game :T

Camera lock feature works just fine.

Not being able to customize the touch screen on either console was a huge letdown for me. I just transferred everything to my 3DS XL a few days ago, and using the dpad on the touch screen to turn the camera to the left is dam hard without being able to shrink it like i know the final version allows. Thankfully i know its better in the final version but some people might not realize that. Maybe once i get use to the soft lock more, that issue will go away.

Also, it can not be overstated how amazing/valuable it is to have your two comrades as distractions for the monster when hunting solo. Pre-Tri, finding openings without risking yourself was so much harder and really tested the 50 minute time limits before your weapons got up to snuff.

ummm... isn't the touchscreen fully customizable in the full version of both games?!

edit:
oh, you are talking about the demo.. nevermind then!

Why is Capcom obsessed with tank controls?
I hate being stuck in 5 second animations
What the fuck? These aren't tank controls, tank controls are when you turn (usually sluggishly) and move forward and back with the left stick or D-Pad versus "move in the direction you press" that other games, like this, do. These are just kind of clunky controls you just have to try to get used to.

**For the record, I've put about 350hrs into this series**

So basically having played both demos now, I can finally feel confident in skipping the Wii U version entirely

Wii U Summary:

- CONSTANT judder due to unlocked framerate makes me noxious. Capcom going for the bullet point of 1080p natively at the expense of actual visual fidelity/quality and keeping the fps up, just illustrates how half assed this version is. It fucking sucks and is awful to look at. The fact that no one has called out the flat out 1080p, 60fps lie is even more disheartening. The game literally hardly ever hit 60fps unless you're MAYBE looking at a wall or going through a damn loading screen. And of course, I won't even address that sorry, this game looks pretty ugly blown up no a big screen. 1080p ain't gonna fix Wii/PS2 assets nor is a HD UI. Playing it on the 3DS though, does.

- Uncustomizable controls. Absolutely genius of Capcom to, you know, map the primary functions to the freaking bumpers instead of the actual triggers. Brilliant stuff.

- Boy oh boy is this really ever a 3DS up port. Yeah, we knew that going in, but that doesn't make it any easier to swallow when you continue to notice how they did the bare minimum here. Everything from the fact that camera control is still completely digital and poorly implemented (huge deadzone coupled with pan speed that's too high by default), to how the freaking Gamepad UI doesn't even fill up the screen. Hilarious.
Yeah, I knew some of this, but man, I'm worn out on making excuses for this kind of shit.
Thankfully the 3DS version is fucking stellar and is where the game belongs. I swear the only reason people are giving the Wii U version the time of day is because Capcom knowingly hid the mode that most people cared about behind it. Oh and it's $59.99 too boot

I can't believe I was entertaining the notion of buying it merely because I wanted to ensure that they would not forgot North America next time around ...we shouldn't have to do this

Anyway

Wii U version - 6/10

3DS Version - 9/10

Also, I had no problem using the Wii U Pro Controller with this

Man I can't take down Plesioth. The underwater controls are really hard.

Managed to beat him with Wii U and 3DS. Had a bit of learning curve with 3DS controls, but the lock on (click on the monster icon on the touch screen, then tap L) and the virtual Dpad work really well together. Although I'll admit, I'm using two weapons I have a thousand hours experience with in hammer and switch axe. Monster Hunter is really about practising to hone your weapons skills and learning monster's tells.

And just remember guys, you won't be starting out with armour / weapons this awesome in the real game. :P

Am I imagining things or did they nerf the long sword? I checked the digital instruction book to be sure I'm not missing anything, but it seems it's moveset has been reduced. Or I'm doing it wrong, because I can't use any standard attacks except stabbing/slashing forward and backing off, while I'm pretty sure you could wield the thing in any direction and hence keep the flow better in Tri.

I didn't even mind the underwater controls in Tri, but on the 3DS, it's too hard for me. How are you guys holding the 3DS (XL)? I even put it on the 3DS stand that came with Kid Icarus. I always make it limp before it ends.

Damnit, Plesioth killed me and I had to be brought back to camp on a wooden stretcher x_x

I tried to run back to him but I ran out of time right as I got to the beach near the ocean. I used the Gunlance instead of the Hunting Horn, and I think I liked it a little better. I couldn't figure out the "gun" part though. Is it the electricity or does it shoot bullets? If it's bullets, then how do I shoot them?

I guess I'll go try some other weapons on the rabbit first and then come back to that bastard Plesioth when I get comfortable with something. Hopefully the bow works out because that's what I planned to use in the full game.

Just holding it normally. Not making my hand cramp, or anything like Kid Icarus without the stand.

Use the shortcut from camp. Look west while you're in camp and you'll see water. Jump in and swim toward the cave below and you'll be transported pretty close to the beach. Will cut down on a lot of time spent walking.

Are you making sure that your spirit meter is maxed out? Those moves won't be usuable until it's filled up, and then you use R to bring them out.

I know, I'm not talking about the special attacks though. Maybe I remember it wrong, but it feels awkward that you can only slash forward/upward with your ordinary attacks (X and A), because sidewise slashes were also common just pressing those in Tri iirc.

I think it's a game I would have played solo years ago on top of the multiplayer, cause I finished worse solo experience like crystal chronicles and pso. Now it's one of those games that just bring the wasting time dilemma and it would be hard to invest lot of time on multiplayer with all the farming. It was also a confirmation that I wouldn't like dark souls, with battles lost in that no man's land between action and borderline turn based.

press X and A at the same time for the horizontal fade slash

Hmm I guess I'm just gonna have to practice underwater combat.

Press A to fire. Check the manual for full controls. Also, this is the shortcut EvilMario is talking about: http://youtu.be/26p-nbRxXjQ?t=1m19s

I don't really remember any sideslashes other than the ones from that chain attack.

EDIT: Oh, I guess the others know what you're talking about.

This is my major gripe with the controls too. L and R are terrible as the primary positions for your index fingers.

Yeah, my fingers went right to the trigger buttons because they're so much more comfy. We can confirm there's no controller config in the full game, right? Shame.

Oh, the sidestep attack is X and A at the same time, and while it's revving up, you hold the direction you want to sidestep in (it backpedals by default). That's definitely still in there.

Just played the wii u demo for the first time. As someone who isn't familiar with monster hunter, I thought it was pretty damn cool. The great sword was a bit sluggish for me though

Remember guys, 3DS version has a virtual manual if you're curious about weapon controls. ie; Not familiar with the Hunting Horn? Look at the manual for the combos for specific stat bonuses.

I still dont know how to use the lock on think I click it and it dont do nothing. Beat the easy monster but the hard one in the water might take awhile. As this is my first monhun experience Im more than pleased and super hyped. Now waiting for the Wii U version to download.

It's not a lock-on; all it does is re-center the camera onto the monster when you tap L. It doesn't stay on them or anything.

... How do I lock on?

When you're on the map with a monster, click on the monster icon on the touch screen. Tapping the L shoulder button will then swing the camera around to focus on the monster, rather than just repositioning it behind you. Incredibly helpful under water.

I like the 3DS version better, it seems smoother for some reason and I like the 3D. But I'm going to have to get the Wii U version to play online.

Great Sword has the most powerful attack in the game. That's kinda it's thing, slow but powerful. If you noticed while using it that you can charge it up, it has 3 charges, if you time it right at the right time after the third charge you'll get the most powerful attack in the game.

With the Great Sword your going to want to focus on the Draw version of that charge attack. If you just do the combo attack with it, you're "doing it wrong". Focus on getting in the right position, with your sword sheathed, then start the charge attack and time it perfectly and you will be doing massive damage.

The Great Sword is a ton of fun when you learn the monsters patterns and can time that perfect triple charge draw attack.

Don't just go swinging away randomly with it, that'll get you nowhere. Always use the charge attack. Even a single charge or double charge will be good, but try to get the triple charge and release at the correct time for the 'super charge'. It's kinda like figuring out the boost at the start of Mario Kart games to get that super charge. Their are visual cues though and you'll hear a sound if you get it.

Sucks that the weapon sets are the same and that I can't see the armor skills

But eff yeah it's monhun

Also you can't get the exact finish times so we can't compete in the thread for best time
