Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I found myself not using the Right analogue stick at all on the wiiu version. I just used the L-focus. Am I turning into a casual?

As a former Tri player, as soon as I started getting some practice in, using the right stick just started coming naturally again.

So yeah, you're a dirty casual.
Not really, I do use the focus on occasion myself.
:)

Is there any video out there of the Wii U game showing off the village and various field areas but are not online multiplayer focused? Just regular offline gameplay?

I want to compare it with Monster Hunter Tri footage.

The demo was kind of a hassle for me.

I'm an inverted Y-axis guy, so not being able to change the controls in the demo made Plesioth a nightmare in the water. Plus, I've playing on a Dual Shock 3/Wii Classic Controller for so long, and with the button placement of the WiiU Pro Controller, I was hitting X thinking it was Y.

With that said, I was still able to kill both monsters! Lagombi got his face hammered, and Plesioth went down with a switch axe. I got a lot to relearn, but damn was it nice to go back to Monster Hunter.

You can change the Y-axis stuff. It's under the select menu -> options. There's individual options for bowgun scopes and their quick aiming as well.

And yeah after years of using a 360 controller on that system and PC it's annoying adjusting to the nintendo button naming conventions. But I was fine in Tri after a while, so whatever.

You can invert the Y-axis in the options.

No kidding? All I got was a "choose pad or controller" choice. Guess I need to look closer, I was also trying to entertain someone else watching at the time so I got distracted.

Yeah, it's a bit hidden, press start to bring up the menu, and choose options there. That's in 3DS, I assume it's the same in the WiiU version.

Has to be said-- after beating Plesioth a few times you start seeing him as a joke, a clown. Of course defensively we're pretty damn well off in this demo, no illusions there, but he's not very dangerous underwater and his water spray is one of the easiest attacks to dodge. One trick pony (fish), Plessy, hip check was all you could muster for fame.

Still, much <3 to the ple-bro.

Plesioth's pretty much a water version of Rathalos, but without the (HUGE) annoyance of him flying all the time. He's not that bad.

Demo a month early, that is some devious shit. Those motherfuckers have me frothing at the mouth already.

During gameplay, it's in the options when you bring up the menu with -/Select.

A noob playing MH for the first time: http://youtu.be/HffAw8uzDtY

SCREAMING! :lol

He likes the game but he doesn't what to do because there isn't a tutorial, great job Capcom.

Not the first newb video I've seen where they don't ever eat a steak or a ration. Your hunter gets hungry people, eat your well done steaks!

First thing you should do before you enter the zone with the monster is eat a well done steak.

There is no way of knowing that thanks to the complete lack of any explanations in the demo.

I'm not going to join in on the debate about whether there should have been a tutorial or more explanations or not in the demo because I can see both sides of the argument, but I will say one of the really great things about Monster Hunter is learning new things all the time in it.

Like the poster above said, 60 hours into the game and he just learned about a very basic thing. You can look at that both ways, annoying that he didn't know that for so long, but also amazing that after so long playing the game he's still learning new things.

40 hours in, 100 hours in, 300 hours into Tri and I was still learning new things about the game. To me, it really made the game stay fresh and kept showing off the amazing depth this series really has.

There are hundreds of items in the game, the demo has like 30-40 or something like that. Would you really want it to bog you down and explain them all? I think the the demo just wants you to go in, and figure things out for yourself. That's really the fun part about monster hunter.

You watch the video I quoted and I guarantee you the next time that guy plays, he'll be better, then the next time even better and his hunting skill will grow so exponentially that that is the real 'leveling' up system of monster hunter. It's player skill, player knowledge of the weapon, player knowledge of the monster, and player knowledge of the game itself. There's no +1 level of this or that. But if you watch new people play, or you're a new person yourself, be aware of all the different aspects of the fight you are getting better at each time you play. You don't have to kill the monster on your 2nd or 3rd or even 5th try, but I guarantee you're getting to be a better hunter. A better Monster Hunter!!!

You are a TRUE hunter

Since the PSP versions, I've frequently tried to get into MH games but with little success. I had pre-ordered The Wii U version to give it one more roll of the dice, but having played the demo I swiftly cancelled it. It's a shame, but I seem to like the idea of what the game is about rather than actually playing it. It really is one of those Marmite games, you either love or hate it (I don't like Marmite).

But then... I love the monster-hunting missions in Peace Walker.

I probably only love this game because I see it as an RPG (tons of item and equipment crafting/customization, lots of little subsystems and mechanics) that extends into an adrenaline filled big boss battle type of gameplay.

Then again, I also loved the way Brutal Legend evolved from a simple hack and slash with AI allies into a action/RTS hybrid.

You are a TRUE hunter

I admit that I totally drank the Monster Hunter Kool-Aid. All it's faults aren't really faults, they are what make you a True Hunter.... right? right? There is no wrong with Monster Hunter. It's all by design. If you're having trouble with it, you're doing it wrong. Never ask for target lock on or target assist, never ask for better camera control. If you do, you are not a True Hunter...

:P

After my recent post I sat back, and had this thought. The real problem with the demo is not that it doesn't have a tutorial. It's the fact that it has the 30 try limit, and at the same time a 20 minute quest time. The Tri Demo lack just as much information, but it was on disc. So I could pay it as much as I want. This allowed me to spend sometime just testing things out for my self. Using everything in my pouch, figure out my character limits, and explore the area. We are all gamers here with some kind of experience on figuring gaming problems out. If people felt like the could test things out. With out the idea that the timer is ticking down, and I only have so many times to try. Maybe people would experiment more, and find answers to their question the old fashion way.

You don't have to close the demo after playing it once. You can leave the system on as long as you want, try every weapon once and don't even approach the monster, just dick around, etc.

Honestly, the best way to get new players into the game is with a tutorial like Tri. One that takes a while but really lets you take your time getting into it. One that hints at all the different systems in the game (watch monster behavior! learn gathering spots! figure out what to farm/fish for! figure out how to KO to learn damage types! combine items to overcome bag space! craft motherfucker!) but leaves you to explore in those directions and figure things out from there.

I've never touched a Monster Hunter demo (haven't bought my 3DS XL yet) but if I had tried the Tri demo I probably would have never bought the full game nor convince four other friends to buy it with me.

Hell, the demo would have been better if they put the monsters on the far reaches of the map, and then let you kill whatever you want with no time limit. End the demo if you kill the boss, but don't tell people the point is killing the boss. They'll go through items and stuff, practice with weapons, discover combos, etc. They even leave a BBQ spit in the item box at the start!

One of the best things about Tri was just taking a handful of materials and just dicking around on the Deserted Island for as long as you want. You could gather herbs and mushrooms to make as many potions as you needed. Whetstones could be gathered and sometimes mined. Cut up some monsters for meat and make enough steak to stave off hunger. Just live off the land, explore around, and eventually the big monsters would just arrive every 5-20 minutes. Kill them, carve them, and continue on your merry way. Eventually more would come.

I only ever left because my bags got full. I'd also really really really love if they finally gave an auto-drop into bank option rather than do everything one at a time when you got back home, but I'll take my blessings one at a time (I'm actually getting to play this game in english).

Oh well, back to watching videos of Shepard/SocialDissonance.

Honestly, Free Hunt mode would have made for a better demo, with some of the monsters unlocked obviously.

I already know this, but people who are having problems understanding the game. Maybe having the issues they are because they feel they can't just dick around. Then you still have the 20 minute limit. So playing around is still going to be hard to do.

This right here is what I'm getting it. If they just would have giving you a free mode. Similar to going out to hunt during single player. Then throw in 2 random different level monsters to fight. People could spend their time figuring the game out, and fighting the monsters with no since of urgency. If I don't fight the monster time is going to run out and stop the demo anyway. This game is like most old games where it will teach you while playing.

Damn I can't win with the bow! But ffffffff it's fun to use. Took a while to figure out how to get the coatings on there. Now I only have to figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I beat the Plesioth on my first try, with the Light Bowgun. I wonder if I'm an extra-badass in that case :o

Congratz RobbieNick !

FINALLY FUCKING BEAT PLEISOTH WITH THE DUAL SWORDS! yessssssss!!!!!

I thought my favorite weapon was the Long Sword but after doing that the dual swords might be my favorite..

Had my question answered in the other thread and it took me to these videos showing offline play. Pretty much the first few quest you end up doing in the game and other areas. Figured these might be useful for someone trying to decide if they want to get the game and if the demo isn't helping. Courteously of youtuber zedamex.

You can't free hunt in the different areas right? Only Moga Woods?

I'm at the point where I'm giving every weapon a try in the demo, even ones I used to hate like gunlance and HH. I still don't care much for gunlance, but HH seems pretty damn good now. Don't think it'll be replacing hammers for me anytime soon, but I'll definitely try fighting plesioth with it a few times. I still wish the whole note combination thing was a bit more intuitive.

Good idea, it shows the beginning and will probably show why it would be boring to be a part of the demo.

Yea, you can only free hunt in Moga Woods.

I thought my favorite weapon was the Long Sword but after doing that the dual swords might be my favorite..

I'm still trying to beat him with the GS, I'm 0 for 2 now with just running out of time being the problem, not dying. Beat him my first try with the hammer, but for some reason I can't land enough hits with the GS.

My background in Tri was exclusive to the Hammer and GS and I was quite competent with both. So it's really irking me I can't do it with the GS, heh. Granted I haven't played Tri in over 2 years now and I only played with the Wiimote controls, so I'm quite rusty overall at the game and I still struggle with the new gamepad controls. But I still feel like I should be beating him with no problem.

I have a question concerned weapon crafting in this game. How is the process? Say I want to use Dual Swords, Long Swords and Hammers throughout the game.. What do I have to do to get better weapons... I tried looking on the wiki, but it's so confusing..
