Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Is it just me, or is anyone more excited about getting this on the 3DS as opposed to the Wii U?

We just got our Wii U yesterday. I'm super excited about Monster Hunter but meh about getting it on the Wii U. Day one purchase on 3DS though. Something about being able to play it portable, in 3D, with good graphics and online play.
Online via Wii U though.

I can see the benefits of both tbh.

I like that one better but the actual saying has three trys (I looked it up!).

That's crazy - I have never heard anyone use three "try"s in actual practice.

The workaround to get the 3DS version online sounds awful.

LAN adaptor, relay tool download. Doesn't seem that bad to me. And since you'd then have a portable MonHun and an online MonHun it seems like the good outweighs the bad. Oh, and if I get it on 3DS I'll also be able to play locally with my friend's who get it in Wii U. Seems like the good outweighs the bad.

I just finished the last urgent quest leading up to G quests, with 26 seconds to spare. I thought I might need the Wii U version and some help at one point, but I can finally get some nice G quest armours.

How much is the LAN adapter? Also, won't the controls be far superior with the CPP? That's something else to buy if you don't already own.

I beat the lagombi. At last. Seems I didn't really understand how to play that game. So it looks cool, but I tried the plesioth and found aquatic battle incredibly difficult. Is it just me?

Man the controls on the 3DS demo are janky! CPP is kind of a must, huh?
With the inclusion of the target-cam function, I haven't had any issues with the camera on 3DS...when on land, anyway. I've even started taking to using it in the Wii U version moreso than manually moving the camera with the right analog!
Water movement, though, is another story. With elevation being partway controlled by camera placement, it really pays to be able to reposition it quickly and (at least in the demo) the giant fake D-pad just doesn't seem responsive enough to reliably control it. Makes facing the Plesioth in the 3DS demo kind of a pain.

What "Tri Tri Tri again" one? Was it something like: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate |OT| If at first you don't succeed, Tri Tri Tri again

Yes. that is it.
I remember seeing it at some point last month when I was lurking. If someone could find the original post. Its either in this thread or the other MH thread.
I couldnt find it myself.

I think it was actually, 'If at first you don't succeed, try Tri again."

Either way, brilliant suggestion from whomever came up with it.

:D
That was actually me, from the other thread. The response has been pleasantly surprising, to say the least. From the initial post:

It's a really bad monster to introduce someone new to the series to underwater battles.

There's a reason the first actual underwater quests in the game - well, at least in Tri - have had you battling regular underwater enemies like Sharqs and Epioth instead of a large monster. So the full game does a much better job easing people into the underwater controls, giving them time to familiarise themselves with how different the timing and feeling is underwater. It's largely the same moveset, but three dimensions demand more active camera control and the slower animations mess with your timing.

I totally get what you're saying, and it's not ideal at all.

BUT, in answer to your points, the LAN adaptor is cheaper than buying the Wii U game on top of the 3DS game. And the controls (I feel) are A-ok without the CPP. Though if do end up picking one up I'd be using it for more than this one game.

I'm happy with the workaround because that means I can play portably AND online, AND locally. It's a somewhat convoluted work-around, but I don't think the cost of the LAN adaptor is that bad, and hey - it may be useful down the road as well.

Thanks.
I'm currently considering getting it and this underwater thing was bothering me.
I didn't read all this thread so perhaps it has been answered, if so, my apologies, but how much time can you put in single player? Is there a story, with a final monster to kill and boom credits?

There is an overarching story to the offline mode and there are several special boss battles along the way, including a final big one that's responsible for the troubles that motivate your progress in the singleplayer. So defeating that monster essentially "concludes" the story mode - but where the story stops is where the game really starts. It's not a regular RPG where you're actively traveling the world and follow a linear plot or anything, the structure is more like a hunt-themed dungeon crawler, with an ever evolving set of quest tiers. The more quests you complete, the bigger and stronger monsters you'll find in new areas as you get further into the game.

It is a huge game. Every Monster Hunter is. I put well over 200 hours into Tri, and Ultimate has like triple the content, potentially.

Well, the old ball and chain will not like it I guess.

I'm going to guess that you're referring to the offline mode as story mode, but there is also a "story" in the online mode and the NPCs will change what little they have to say depending on events that occur as the result of succeeding at certain (generally the rank-up) quests. Unfortunately the vast majority of a hunter's time past the 50 hour mark will probably be post-ending where NPC blurbs become frozen and what little story there is is easily forgotten.

I would compare the structure more specifically to Phantasy Star Online. You have your hub, you pick a quest, and you and your party set out. Unlike PSO, there's no joining people midquest. Given that you could end up waiting 50 minutes for them to return, it would be nice if they fixed that (even just a spectator mode would be welcome).

It's a bigger game for sure, but Tri was, comparatively speaking, not that big on content.

shameless reddit repost - or 4chan?

The Japanese version of MH3GHD for Wii U just updated to version 1.05. Couldn't find any release notes on the web, but Gamepad-only play isn't included yet.

I think 1.05 is the equivalent of the NA/EU versions on day one, with GamePad voice chat and the option to turn the camera with ZL/ZR. (Kingdom Hearts 1 style!)

Agreed, though I'd say that a bunch of NPC comments barely, barely qualify as a story. :p

If someone coming from an RPG asks whether MonHun "has a story", you know what they're asking for, and it's not quite like that. At the same time, you don't want to chase them away by flat out saying it has none. There's a loose story there, there's progression, things are happening etc etc.

The 3DS version has an ugly font. It looks like they just resized an existing one.

Unless they significantly changed the way the font is compared to the demo, it looks like they probably just took some previous PSP font or something and just photoshop-compressed it a little to fit the narrower screen. It looks surprisingly sloppy.

Mario Galaxy and MH confirmed for same universe.
Funny you should mention this. That large tree behind Barroth's mud pit always reminds me of the tree that you fight the giant mole under in SMG.

Edit:
About the font, wonder if its some oversight where they optimized it for the top screen but used the same font on the lower. When I zoom in on those images I see pixel wide vertical slices that are offset awkwardly.

But...(at least in the demo) the text looks equally awkward and rough on the eyes on the top screen. Such a weird thing that I had to imagine would've been pretty easily fixed if anybody just bothered to.

Poor Lagombi...he's just become my testing-grounds for figuring out which weapons I like the feel of, slaying him over and over to find that nice match of fun factor and actual effectiveness. I'm trying to narrow things down so I can focus on 2-3 weapon types for the main game (perhaps dabbling in one or two weapons from other classes if I end up with an excess of monster loot). I know that there's going to be a google-doc or somesuch that will list the GAF community for the game, I figure the usual suspects like name, GAF-name, region, and maybe usual playing times will be on there, does anyone know if there are plans for people to put a list of preferred weapon types along with that? Would be a fun way to plan out a party, but I suppose those who go for more variety wouldn't gain much use in it.

This is weird: try playing with the 3D slider while looking at the font. There are several points where the font becomes entirely readable.

edit: actually it depends on the word, at least on the character select screen. Weird.

Totally agree

Crazy distracting and I found turning off 3D helps immensly. I wonder if this is a scaling issue since I'm playing it on a 3DSXL

There is no scaling difference between 3DS and 3DS XL. Same screen resolution, lower pixel density. Exactly the same pixels, just bigger.

However, I believe this is one of those games that turns on anti-aliasing when you turn off 3D, which smooths the fonts. Also...

This is true of almost every type of precise "pixel art" on 3DS. Load up any GBVC game (with the border on) or 3D Classic and play with the slider. You get the exact same effect. 3D off = clean, 3d max = clean, most everywhere in between (with a few exceptions) blurs the pixel edges.

I can confirm that the font is the same with the OG 3DS. Looks best with the slider partially up. I have to wonder if the issue has to do with the game being outsourced or having a low budget. For example, there aren't nearly as many totally new monsters as Portable 3rd or 4 have.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate |OT| Play the game like an ace, to wear their carapace

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate |OT| To save the Hunters from the evil Jho.

Your joke is better than mine are. :|

Guys, I really want to thank you all for this thread. I've owned multiple Monster Hunter games, but I never played any more than a few hours in them (never got to a large enemy boss and only once got to a second zone). I just didn't get the game. Nothing felt right. The inventory items didn't make sense. The weapons felt awful. The combat was difficult and unrewarding.

But thanks to the demo and the information in this thread, I really get the game now. It just clicked. I popped Tri into my Wii this past week, and I've put a lot of time into the game now. I get it. It makes sense. And it's actually sort of brilliant. I had to force myself to shelf Tri because 3U is hitting in two weeks and I didn't want to burn out too soon by overdoing it now.

So, this thread has been extremely helpful and I just wanted to let you guys know that you have unlocked one of the few games that I've always wanted to like but never could. So thanks for that! You guys are doing the Lord's work here. Keep it up.

The more people we get, the more MH games we will get. Welcome

A real shame the 3DS version isn't going online to join the fun. The 3d effect is nicely done and the game looks just like Wii Monster Hunter tri. It was strange seeing Antekas in Tundra area was nice new touch especially to someone who played a lot Tri and hunted Gigganox way too mutch. The 3DS was very familiar espescially coming from PSP MH hunters. The gunlance felt just MHFU on PSP. I also appreciate that Capcom decided to add the HH,GL,DS,Bow into the Tri universe. Should be a hoot using the HH underwater or using a Gunlance Wyverrn Fire to blow Deviljho face off.

Welcome to the hunting hall! I kind of share the sentiment, as by the time I got Tri and really started getting into it, most of Tri's community had far surpassed where I'd been. It'll be nice to get in on the ground floor this time around and get to experience things alongside the rest of the community here.

That's just awesome.

Its typical Monster Hunter font. Possibly resized, but I imagine it will look significantly better/clearer in person.

It doesn't look that bad in-game. The screenshots make it look a lot worse. Actually the screenshots in general don't do the game justice to how it actually looks when you play it.
Which is why I'm not worried about MH4's "graphical issues".

What are you talking about? I checked out the demo on two systems, the problem exactly the same as on the screenshots above.

(Here you can see that I have checked the demo on both systems)

The font itself is normal (similar to PSP versions), but these terrible problems with compression and blur...

I plan to buy the game, but I would like them to have corrected these minor deficiencies :)
