Monster Hunter Wilds open beta impressions

holy maccaroni, got to see the game on PS5 now.....what happened here?
Assets, models, textures, geometry and especially the lighting look ancient and despite that the game is so heavy that the DRS stomps the IQ into downright unacceptable territory, at least in performance mode. Right now this Beta makes the release version of DD2 look like a technological masterpiece....
I´m gonna check this out again on PC come friday but this looks rough so far and if that isn`t a very old build the february release is going to be a bumpy ride...at least for console players.

I knew the RE engine had its issues with open world settings and adjusted my expectations after DD2, but damn.....
The production values, character models, clothing, weather effects, animations, and organic world makes this game absolutely breathtaking. This is easily one of the most expensive games ever lol, but in all the right ways. One of the few titles that feels "next-gen".

Dude must be playing another game or something :lollipop_squinting:

if you didn't play it in fidelity mode I can understand. I've never seen a game with such a drastic graphical difference between performance and fidelity mode on PS5

PC preload done, now lets see how this ll run like shit in most PCs and ppl ll defend the lack of optimization saying things like " the ecosystem is so heavy on CPU cause in handling life itself, you see that Rey Dau ? i see he being born "

Can´t say the Fidelity mode had me swooning, either. The assets, model and texturework still can`t hold a candle to last gen entries like HFW and the lighting system seemingly lacks any form of dynamic GI.
Now, asset and model quality is a budget thing, that is something we simply have to accept to a degree, but a lighting system such as this should not be in a 2025 open world current gen exclusive release anymore, especially after they already had RTGI in DD2. That and the terrible performance is 100% that awful RE engine.

How? Maybe I'm blind, but all I can see is this:

Really? It says I'll be notified with an email when they need more participants. I don't think I've ever seen an open beta like this before, usually you just click download.

Edit: Yeah, the icon changes and you start downloading. What a weird way to do things.

Ya its not the best in the industry by any means but it seems decent enough.

FF7 Rebirth entered the chat

I think its just as bad if not worse than FF

I tried both modes, yes performance looks awful on base model. fidelity 120hz on looks and runs fine imo. I love what i played. It will look and run better on the Pro obviously so im happy

Yeah, I really wonder if my 11600 can get me to a consistent 60fps. Judging by the requirements and the console version, that's probably a no.
RE engine dosnt like open worlds you know
Yeah I'm bracing for the worst here. PS5 version have signs of being CPU choked at numerous spots too. Going to be disastrous for Capcom if they can't make this run well on mid-tier PCs IMO. World is really popular in Asia where people typically don't exactly opt for the highest tier of GPU/CPU setups. Optimization should be a high priority. Maybe the engine simply has too many hard barriers in an open world setting, like you said.

Iv noticed multiple times this too and it seems they are implementing the same tactics that Dragons Dogma 2 did by culling NPCs. I watched as the group of 3 or so little raptors were drawn out of the screen and back in, right in front of me as i was running in the world at a shockingly close range. It must just be the way the engine handles open worlds. I guess they havent figured it out.

It’s really not. I played nonstop from last night til the beta closed (took the day off) and while you can do the R1 move while in focus, you don’t have to. The part will still take increased damage and simply appears from hitting a spot repeatedly, it’s all quite natural while playing. What is cool though, is if you do choose to pop the wound with focus + R1 you will usually get a stagger, which is nice.
Hmmm okay. Hoping it feels more natural flow to combat and NOT like the stupid stop and go of iceborne with its tenderize mechanic...

Lol exactly, i played most on quality mode and the game look awful for a 2025 nextgen only game, in perf mode it looks like you are downright playing on an undocked switch resolution wise.

I may be a monster hunter nut gobbler but i'm not gonna sweeten the deal, the game on console looks and run terrible for now.

Looks like Capcom left some references in, dataminers already extracted this list of returning monsters from the Steam beta:

  • 0005 Gravios (Monster Hunter 1, not seen since MHGU)
  • 0009 Gypceros (Monster Hunter 1, not seen since MHGU)
  • 0070 Nerscylla (Monster Hunter 4, not seen since MHGU)
  • 0071 Gore Magala (Monster Hunter 4, previously appeared in MHRise: Sunbreak)

Super hyped about the last two.

Anyone else like me.
I play thru the story and get my good skillsets going. But then stop once it reaches into the super post game difficulty cause I just don't have it in me.

I keep going, but once you get into the variant monsters at end-endgame, I start losing interest. Usually that's when I start playing multiplayer only until they start releasing patches with new monsters/quests. I think World handled endgame way better than Rise did. Nothing I did at the end of Rise felt rewarding to me.

Anyways, I was able to launch the beta on Steam and compile shaders, but I get a network error when I try to pick languages and play. What time does the Steam beta open exactly?

Also, Danjin44 Danjin44 - no Wyverian audio language option...

Hell yea, preload started on Steam. Can't wait to get in.

Thought this was funny, I read that there's currently a bug that turns characters into western developed characters when you're holding a shield.

Ya the facial animations in game are absolutely horrific

I’m literally the polar opposite of you. I’ve played nearly every MH game to completion and then play far beyond end game, min maxing builds and soloing every available quest.

Not a true hunter until you pointlessly farm for a god tier roll off of charms/amulets. Harder then any boss in the game.
If you play on PC you constantly have this dilemma when you see how easy it is to mod yourself the godrolls....

I haven't given in and done it....

I was just about to edit my post lol

Ever since MH has been widely available on PC mods and cheating have become a thing.
A lot of it is speed runners desperate for views and any edge they can get, modding in the best possible charms the game will allow and they tell themselves they “aren’t cheating” because the charms are within the games bounds.
But when most people never even got an attack 4 charm in world, it’s kind of a crock of shit. Then they can make super builds and do just that little bit of extra damage and set times that another equally skilled player can’t beat.

MH being on PC essentially ruined the speed running of the game.

Also the fact that you have no idea what overlays they are using giving them exact information on monster stun values, life totals, break thresholds, etc. they’ve turned speed running the games into a complete joke.

That said, I only personally accepted console runs. You just can’t trust PC runs anymore.

Yeah any MH game or derivatives that rely on getting a super rare perfect RNG roll can't be taken seriously when they mod or edit it in and kinda kills a whole lot of grinding in MH that pads out your playtime. Cheapens the whole thing. But maybe just like them dumbing down the combat to be 70% ground and 30% aerial maybe they will make the grind more accessible too?

I never really trust speedruns for any game to begin with since most of them are tool assisted which in my book doesn't count.

There is also evidence suggesting that the beta will be updated with more quests. Looks like we might see #2 in your list pretty soon.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Downloading the beta, will try to check both Xbox and PS5 versions to see whichever runs better for the release, though its a beta so both will probably get a decent amount of ironing by Feb.

I didnt bother downloading this on the PS5 due to the image quality, can't wait to play it in a bit on my PC!

As always I'm unsure of what weapon I want to go with.. I always want to like the greatsword so maybe with the focus mode thing this time around I'll get a better hang of it... if not.. Sword and Shield it is! Do we know if sword oils are back?

If they are they weren’t in the beta as far as I know

After playing quite a bit I ended up enjoying it and I will probably buy it at launch.

It plays ok at 30 frames on ps5.... But I didn't try the perfomance mode. Also, turning off the motion blur seems to make the game run better.

The game feels quite accessible, so I hope that new players will enjoy it.

The only thing that I disliked is that inviting friends is kinda convoluted, hopefully they will streamline it.
