A sunfish that washed up near the base of Farewell Spit is a monster with a strange sense of timing, a marine expert says.

Freaky.

Why do they call it a "Monster" if it is a "Sunfish"?

Are sunfishes a species or a group? Because I've heard of sunfishes, but haven't seen ANYTHING like this one.

I saw one while snorkleing off the coast of Kawaii but it wasnt near that big. It was about my size which was still a little freaky.

I think I saw one of those scorpion fish/stone fish while I was snorkeling off Maui 8 years ago and it scared the living hell out of me because I knew how deadly they are.

Seeing a sunfish would sure scare me if I saw it in the water (and I was in the water). Don't think it's anything to be worried about though.

Smaller sea life.

Biggest fish evar, right there.

I have always imagined how incredibly scary it must be to swim naked right beside one of these. Imagine if you were stranded in sea and one of these huge-ass whales comes along......

When I was younger I always mixed up Soylent Green with Simple Green. So people would be like "What is Soylent Green?" and I'd say "Oh I wash the car with that stuff". The looks I got were strange.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I like to say that nothing really scares me, but the more I think about it, that's a lie. The ocean in general can be a very frightening place.

From this picture you can clearly see how the Sunfish preys on it's daft and unsuspecting victims. By using it's incredibly powerful suction ability it sucks the innards out of its prey via it's mouth leaving a hollow shell of goop and bones behind.

seen a couple of shows where people swam with whale sharks and it was okay, just look out for the tail hitting.

Seriously that fish looks an awful lot like a lot of those scary videogame characters that are sort of just diembodied floating heads!! Oh and Sharks are proper fish. Modern fish are are actually much more 'new' so to speak in a sense that a lot of the features they have only evolved recently while sharks are a far more ancestral design. Still sharks fall into the clade of what fish are.

Yes the pic is of a whaleshark. The whaleshark is a non-carniverous shark. Not a whale.

Whales are mammals, jaws is not. Therefore, whaleshark is more like fish than whale.
