Montezuma's Revenge! Director's Cut

Darkmakaimura

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
So this game came out of nowhere.

This used to be one of my favorite games on the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. Quite a few younger people have probably never even heard of this game.

If you like games like La Mulana which seems to have been inspired by the original Montezuma's Revenge, I urge you to check this out. It's very old school.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Looks nice except that awful mobile game title screen.

Almost seems like there's multiple versions of this game for PC. There's even a 40th Anniversary edition coming out on January 16th that's different than the Directors Cut. Dafuq?

Licencing has probably changed hands many times in 40 years. This one does say the original developer was involved. Dunno about the others. Edit: ok so both by Normal Distribution, regular and DC versions, are by him.

Not liking the new graphics in most, it's such an old and abstract by necessity game adding details doesn't work for the most part. Going full retro like the one you posted seems best, if they can't do a Spelunky (or Mario).

Yeah it's the same developer so that's kind of weird. So far the 40th Anniversary edition looks like the best.

I would love to see Pitfall II get a new edition. I love that game and it was pretty much my favorite Atari 2600 game.

I prefer the look of these, though it does say that the 40th edition will "complete" the game (apparently it was incomplete back in the day but I dunno about the one one by Digital Distribution) so I'll probably just check out this DC version, presumably complete by the original dev, when on Steam.
Edit: now I'm confused too as the 40th edition also says "match the full vision of creator Robert Jaeger", wtf, lol 🤷‍♂️

Takes me back to simpler times of gaming. This was a great game. I remember owning this on Colecovision when Parker brothers absolutely unleashed releases on the system around the crash, made it difficult to appreciate the A2600 version. I would guess most C64 or AppleII owners had 'legitmate' copies of this one too ;)

I used to play this on PC back in the late 80s.. Holy shit what a frustrating and difficult game that was for me as a small kid 😅

Might be more fun today.

This is the game that La Mulana must have been inspired by or at least it reminds me of it.

La-Mulana was inspired by MSX games like Maze of Galious. Of course it's more visible in the original freeware version, the commercial Wiiware (and then all platform) release changed quite a bit.

That was after Montezuma so possibly owes some of its design to it directly or not though the previous year also saw the release of stuff like Spelunker & the same year Pitfall II & Below the Root.

40th Anniversary Edition out on Steam. I'm partial to the DC, I'd rather wait for it. Edit: Wait, the DC is DLC for the 40th Anniversary Edition, wtf. I'm gonna get it stand alone on GOG if that means it won't come to Steam in that form. I guess it settles it, the original dev is involved with all these. Weird.

The pricing here is wack to be honest. I got the stand alone DC on gog for 8 eur instead before they put it off the market. Hopefully they don't do anything shit like not update it to be the same version if it has any improvements on Steam (though if they pass it off as mere DLC it probably doesn't).

Can also confirm the enhanced graphics option of the non Director's Cut/non Anniversary Edition, vanilla version is NOT present in the DC. That one actually was fitting to the original style to me, compared to the AE's naff 3D stuff. This is one weirdly handled game revival... Oh well, DC seems fine...
