Most underrated BEU's?

My top two picks:

Battletoads - Incredibly fun, yet cheap series. If it wasn't for savestates on emu's I would have destroyed my PSP/Xbox.

Punisher - CPS2 version, so much fun to play in co-op. I'd love to see this on XBLA.

I don't think Battletoads is underrated man. That thing has just given nightmares to like 40,000 people is all.

It always seemed underrated to me compared to stuff like SOR, FF and Double Dragon.

The Combatribes - arcade, Brawl Brothers/Rushing Beat Ran - SNES, The Ninja Warriors/NinjaWarriors Again - SNES, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not Chaos Bleeds) - XBOX

Knights of the Round is a good old one.

I thought Urban Reign was the best 3D BEU. Smooth gameplay and no crappy "rpg elements", just a straight beat em up. Some very cool team up attacks too.

If you hate the PS2 version, I understand. But the PC version rocked.

Totally Cadillacs & Dinosaurs.

Punisher and AvP get all the non-Final Fight Capcom BEU love, but C&D actually kicks those two to the curb. Awesome, awesome game.

There was an arcade game I remember in which you ventured from area to area fighting street punks. Then again, it could have just been Street Fighter 2. I was 10.

:lol Isn't that the description of just about every beat 'em up ever made?

Do the Capcom D&Ds count? They had semi-heavy RPG elements, but were BEUs gameplay-wise and real quarter-munchers.

Brawl Brothers and Sonic Blast Man on SNES were also really good and often overlooked. I don't recall Sonic Blast Man 2 being as good though.

Yeah, and I could have just imagined the whole thing. Though I think this game was based more on smaller battles or even one-on-one contests.

Baseball Ninja Batman.

How can you reply with anything else? And yes, the game is as ridiculous as that name sounds.

Black Jezus says Play More Spikeout

(And change the controls cos the default ones are rubbish -- R Trigger should be Charge)

I'm the opposite way, I played the demo on the Mac and didn't care much for trying to control it with a mouse, but the controls worked great on the Dual Shock 2.

Either way, Oni was a damn good beat-em-up. It's a shame it got shit on by everyone because of the terrible wannabe anime art style.

I'll also put in a mention of Eve of Extinction, being able to switch weapons in mid combo made for some very creative attacks.

The Hook arcade game is a excellent BEU that might get overlooked because of its license. Irem's other beat-em-ups (Blade Master, Undercover Cops, Ninja Baseball Bat Man) are also quite good.

It was definitely the horribly bland level design. If they avoided that, the game would've been amazing.

You know, for as much hate as it got from...everyone, I played through Fighting Force when it first came out and I did not hate it.

It was a Capcom game called "Avengers". It was/is awesome. Isn't it out on the Capcom collection that was released recently?

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. It's not underrated, but it's not generally realized that it's basically an evolution of the beat-em-up genre, so it's underrated in that it's not recognized as the best beat-em-up out there.

Wow... just. wow.

I know, it's hard to accept. :)

But seriously, why ISN'T it an evolved version of a beat-em-up, at its core? Aside from the platforming/adventure/mild RPG elements (which are sort of peripheral to the main game), it's essentially a 3D beat-em-up with the depth of a fighting game.

Then again, I'm one of those crazies who consider San Andreas to be an action-RPG, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut.

Another vote for Capcom D&D.

Has that hit MAME yet?

Both of them have.

I was playing some old BEU the other day. I forget the name, but it was fantasy-based, and had an isometric perspective, and it had branching paths. The levels were broken up into rooms, and once you solved the rooms task (usually involved killing baddies, avoiding traps, or pressing buttons on walls), you could move on to the next room. At the start of each room was a map of the dungeon you were in.

It had a very Engrish translation. You could level up weapons and pick shit up.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

Buffy and also Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. Both great fisticuff games, both made by the former development team known as The Collective.

Question for those who said Oni: How in God's name do you play that game? Have it for the PS2, and it's seriously one of the hardest games I've ever played.

Agreed. it is essentially DE FACTO evolution of the BEU genre. Buffy is another good example aswell. Compare these two gems to someting like SpikeOut and it becomes even more clear.

Urban Reign, definitely. It's challenging, so pussy game reviewers gave it mediocre scores because they couldn't handle it. :D I need to finish up the game; still have characters left to unlock.

-Sorry Sho Nuff, I really wanted to like Spikeout on Xbox, but it's just so bland (the awful character design and animation don't help, either) and the multiplayer (split screen) SUCKED. Urban Reign is much better IMO.

-Battletoads wasn't an underrated game. I remember it getting GOTY in at least one publication back in 1991. People have fonder memories of Streets Of Rage, Final Fight, and Double Dragon because those were the best in the genre and have aged far better than Battletoads did.

-Capcom BEU games were underrated? Come on; everyone loved D&D, Punisher, and AvP in arcades.

-Oni should be remade for Xbox 360. Maybe it would be good this time around.
