Urban Reign, definitely. It's challenging, so pussy game reviewers gave it mediocre scores because they couldn't handle it. I need to finish up the game; still have characters left to unlock.

-Battletoads wasn't an underrated game. I remember it getting GOTY in at least one publication back in 1991. People have fonder memories of Streets Of Rage, Final Fight, and Double Dragon because those were the best in the genre and have aged far better than Battletoads did.

-Capcom BEU games were underrated? Come on; everyone loved D&D, Punisher, and AvP in arcades.

-Oni should be remade for Xbox 360. Maybe it would be good this time around.

I don't remember D&D getting much love, just the fact of something being a Capcom BEU doesn't make it de facto appreciated. Though I suppose when we're discussing vague terms such as "underrated" there are certainly many different understandings.

I don't remember D&D getting much love, just the fact of something being a Capcom BEU doesn't make it de facto not appreciated.

Same with the Punisher, it's always Final Fight this, and Final Fight that. But Punisher is almost never mentioned, its the better of the two as well IMO.

I was playing some old BEU the other day. I forget the name, but it was fantasy-based, and had an isometric perspective, and it had branching paths. The levels were broken up into rooms, and once you solved the rooms task (usually involved killing baddies, avoiding traps, or pressing buttons on walls), you could move on to the next room. At the start of each room was a map of the dungeon you were in.

It had a very Engrish translation. You could level up weapons and pick shit up.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I play this a lot. It's called Dungeon Magic/Lightbringer. There's also Wizard Fire/Dark Seal II if you want more of this type of RPBEU, but it's far less "cerebral," if you get me

I'm not sure if it was popular or not, but I was a huge fan of X-Men: The Arcade Game. I thought that was a pretty underrated game and a damn shame it was never brought to consoles.

I will say TMNT Turtles In Time, I mean the TMNT Arcade Game always gets the praise when TIT(WTF?! Turtles In Time) gets nothin.

hmmm...since it hasn't been mentioned yet, capcom's Armored warriors / Powered gear is pretty amazing

there's many i've been thinking of in these years but heh, i can't remember now...
i remember playing some obscure japanese scrolling beat em up with manga characters but i can't for the life of me remember the name, it looked something like a sailor moon beat em up but it wasn't and it was amazingly good. I'd say 1992/1995. Not neogeo.

I always liked Rushing Beat 2 on snes, which according to everyone else sucked. Does this make it underrated ?

Urban Reign had an interesting and quite fun fighting engine, but it was boring in execution. Wasted potential all around.

The Warriors is the greatest BEU of the gen...followed directly by EA's Buffy.

Everyone who said Sonic Blast Man gets extra points.
The NES Double Dragons were great, especially NES Double Dragon III, which even today is pretty great compared to its brothers in the genre. Played the heck out of it not too long ago, and it holds up surprisingly well, the gameplay balence is amazing. Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage was the first 3D BEU that I got to really like, it did a lot of things right and few things wrong. Devil May Cry isn't usually recognized as a BEU, it most certainly is, and a really great one. Capcom and Konami made a shootload of great arcade/console BEU's around the late 80's/early 90's, so its easy to forget a few, but Captain Commando shouldn't be forgotten, it was awesome. Same as SNK's Robot Army and Sengoku(Golden Axe Samurai). Final Fight 3 doesn't get the love that it ought to, as it was much better then any console game in the series before or since.
There, that should cover a few bases.

Wasn't Rushing Beat 2 the original Japanese name for Brawl Brothers? I mentioned Brawl Brothers on page 1. I really enjoyed it.

Also, Rushing Beat Ashura (third one in the series) which never made it to the us as far as i know, was very good.


Also, Knights of the Round *sountrack* is very underrated. Awesome stuff.

I'm pretty sure that Rushing Beat 1 was Rival Turf in da states, and Brawl Brothers was its sequel. Never knew there was a third one, Revolution release please?

Anyway, this is rushing beat ashura

and upon some research it appears it was indeed published in the u.s.
It was called The Peace Keepers, there, and they uglified the characters portraits during cutscenes.
