ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- An Asheville woman is charged in the death of her 8-year-old son after allegedly leaving him in the trunk of her car while she went to work.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Asheville police arrested Michelle Gibson Sunday after her son Devon was found dead in her car.



Capt. Steve Lillard said investigators believe Gibson, 36, left Devon Gibson in the trunk of the car while she went to work at the Mountain Trace Nursing Home in Sylva, N.C.

After getting off work Sunday, Lillard said Gibson told a co-worker what happened, but then drove to her apartment in Asheville, where she was arrested.

A cause of death for the boy has not been determined, but heat is believed to be a factor in his death.

Gibson was charged with voluntary manslaughter, second-degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

Her bond was set at $100,000.

Well, 1st degree murder has very specific stipulations attached to it starting with deliberate pre-meditation and planning, so it's not surprising this situation wouldn't stick at a 1st degree murder charge.

I don't see any good reason for leaving her kid in her trunk, unless she wanted the kid to suffocate and suffer. What a bastard. She should be put behind bars for life (and I mean life life, not 25 years life)
