Cube Zero was the ridiculous prequel with the people controlling the Cube which completely ruins any and all mystique the series had.

Cube Zero was insulting. 2 wasn't the best but at least it was similar enough to 1 to be taken seriously.

Those are probably the best two similar films I can think of. Just make sure that you watch Circle, and not The Circle, unless you want to see Emma Watson embrace dystopia.

First 2 Saw movies were amazing and you should def see them. Maze Runner trilogy is okay but only the first fits what you're looking for. The Running Man is another good choice. The Hunger Games are meh imo. The Cabin in the Woods is also a pretty good movie that sorta fits.

Joke didn't work because:

1) The poster of The Square kinda looks like it could be about something like what the OP is asking for.
2) While Triangle is not what the OP is asking for, it still is a high concept scifi'ish "twilight zone" type of a horror mystery that happens in an isolated smallish area.
3) "Circle" is exactly the type of a movie the OP is asking for, but "The Circle" isn't and based on those first two pictures and the fact that a movie called Circle would fit the thread, it looks like you just accidentally picked the wrong picture off google.

Besides, you should've put them in the order of square, circle and triangle to make an Electronic Arts joke, that would've gone over the head of everybody too.
