I never watched this when I was a kid, but I saw films similar to this. I think I would have enjoyed this if I saw it back then. I read that the production was troubled, and even Spielberg felt lile this was not his style of movie, and he should be doing something else. Thankfully the film itself is fun, if a bit bloated experience. Looking at the special effects this film has, it's weird to think how quickly effects evolved, since Jurassic Park was released only one and a half years after this.

I love this film but agree it's rather bloated. The entire first act that takes place in London is like... way too much, and it's nearly an hour before this movie starts moving the plot along.

Title makes it sound like a TV comedy show complete with some shenanigans that the young Washington got upto.

Seems like i was way off, will check out.
 


Really enjoyed this. I thought that the last film Wilde directed, Don't Worry Darling, was a bit of a mess. But this is a big step up with a much tigher focus.

It's consistently terrible from beginning to end.
The camera movement is too frenetic and there's a really dark filter over the entire movie, so it's pretty difficult to tell what's happening in a lot of the scenes.
On top of that, the characters are unlikeable and the story treads the same ground as the last 2 Evil Dead movies.
 
Hungry. 2/5- It is about a hippo, but it sucks, although there is a scene with a poor CG hippo getting burned alive.
 
Bruce Almighty
One of my favourite Jim Carrey movies, I think. Such an easy watch.

Subspecies
One of my favourite vampire movies series. Low budget, campy, but great fun.

All disaster movies are bad. Dantes Peak, Twister, The Day After Tomorrow etc...

Nobody wants to watch characters running around wind and debris for 45 minutes.

Why is this a genre?

It's the true omega genre. Dante's Peak probably gets more viewers per night than a certain game gets players.

This is a classic for a reason, and it's weird nobody seemed to believe in this when it was made. It was apparently difficult to find anyone to finance the film, and even then they had to shoot the movie in black and white because color film cost too much. The film builds it's suspense masterfully, even if the dialogue sounds a bit melodramatic at places.

Imagine if they hadn't called it "Psycho" and named it something like "Fraudress on the Run!" to make it sound like the lady was the main character with no hint toward Norman Bates' role in the title, plot, or advertising.

The movie works in a vacuum to surprise you with its midpoint curveball (shower scene) but they kind of revealed their hand.

You will not find a better martial arts action movie in a very long time. Amazing choreography. 2 vs 2 vs a really big guy that wants to kill all 4 at the end was beyond epic. Also pretend this is somehow in the Marvel cinematic universe because they must all have insane mutant healing factor.

Hah. I literally watched this movie last night with a couple friends. Absolute blast. Deliciously gruesome violence, intricate fight choreography over long cuts (with no shit shaky cam, ofc), and yeah healing factors on characters between fight scenes. Other standout point is that this is one of those movies where characters' strength is correlated to how angry they are. So even better.

Also that we were cracking jokes the entire movie about 'it's like [whatever's going on on-screen right now] because they're in Southeast Asia' because the movie refused to specify a country at the start and instead just named a region.

I just watched it again and did enjoy it more on this 2nd viewing.

My problem remains with the 2 main actors.

Zero chemistry.
She feels like a lesbian forced to play a straight person and the dude is not horrible but quite ordinary.

Like a disposable Patrick Wilson or Ethan Hawke.

Box office numbers would strongly disagree. Also, The Impossible (2012) is the best disaster movie I've ever seen.

I noticed how many movies are made in the genre on Amazon Prime the other day. I even watched 30 minutes Mathew McConaughey drive through debris in "The Last Bus".

God I hate these movies. It's just strange how I can't see anything entertaining about them at all.
 
The Thing Extended

The Thing is my favorite John Carpenter movie on of my favorite movies of all time. This is a must watch for fans of the movie, but it isn't without problems. From a production stand point, a lot of chapter transition effects look pretty amateurish like something you'd see from early or low budget DVDs back in the day. Extended might be a disservice to the runtime that clocks in at over five hours but has nearly 30 minutes of credits. I'd argue that certain sections feel unnecessary (talking about the remake, purposed sequels, interviews with the person stationed in Antarctica or the astrobiologist) and some of the interviewees either feel superfluous (mostly Stephen Colbert). Other segments felt like they could have been dived into more fully, particularly the initial reception to the movie and the impact on Carpenter's career. The only other minor gripe I have is that spend so much time talking about Tarantino that it is a little disappointing that they couldn't get him involved on this project, especially when you consider how wonderful del Toro and Darabont are. Hearing from the cast, production team, and of course, John Carpenter himself is such a treat.

Shout out to clarky clarky for brining it to my attention.
 
Evil Dead Burn is such a disappointing mess. People who disliked the last two because of the gratuitous gore are going to hate this one because it fully leans into gore porn territory. Very mean-spirited and not particularly fun to watch IMO.

I actually had more fun with Lee Cronin's (the director of Evil Dead Rise) The Mummy because it was so absurd and had many moments where I couldn't help but laugh.

That said, I will admit that some of the cinematography is actually very good in this movie. But the script is just terrible and has some questionable Evil Dead lore additions.

Gave this a rewatch the other night. Such a great film. First time I saw it I was sitting in a busy room so viewing was intermittent and it just looked artsy fartsy. The second time, dear God, that's the saddest shit I've seen in a while.. :messenger_pensive:

And what a score!

Seen it a few times now. Never gets old.
 
I am so surprised I didn't liked Project Hail Mary that much.

You can't be technical and then be non technical in the same movie. 800Million dollar collection made me think this is considered to be one of the best sci fi movies. And what it is, Is an average feel good movie for casual movie lovers. Visuals are striking, the pacing is problematic and musical style felt out of place to me.

Solid 7/10

I rewatched this again recently. It's funny, after you've seen it the first time and know where it's going then despite all the weirdness it's actually quite straight forward in terms of what's happening and how it clicks together.

finally got around watching Scream 7, got the UHD.

actually better than I expected it to be. although I thought it had the weakest motive yet for the killers.
but going with the deepfake theme fit really well imo, and was finally kinda realistic, which was of course not the case back in Scream 3, where the killer had a magical instant voice changer that can easily mimic every character in the movie... in a tiny box... that was better than even modern AI voice changes lol

Letterboxd turns into reddit when it touches anything political. For example, a lot of people are downvoting Saving Private Ryan because they show an America flag in a patrotic way, they think it's American imperialism. Terminator gets upvoted because he kills cops in it. It's a nasty site like that.

It was a great genre when the effects backed it up, but now I can see REAL disasters from 100 cell phone and CCTV cameras so my appetite for them......not so much anymore.

Then this movie is for you.

Until I moved out in 2013 my upstairs neighbours were a couple of inbred rednecks who fought all the time.
They would play "Cotton eye Joe" on a loop for hours.

She was pregnant and drinking like a pig and smoking.
They would fight banging around furniture then fuck like animals.

Calling the police did nothing.

I even developed nervous ticks whenever they would disturb me.

On the night before I moved out the dude threw a chair through his window.

On the morning I moved out I left a post-it on their door reading "Fuck off you cunts".

I seriously hope they killed each other.
 
Gods and Generals - 4/5- good movie about the civil war and the leaders and men around it. it is 4.5 hours long though so you need a break or two.

Yeah I thought this the first time I actually watched it without being interrupted.

It wasn't until I looked it up I realised that people were going on all sorts of crazy tangents about it. As soon as it became apparent who was in the bed it hits you what's happened

And that's the worst bit :messenger_pensive:

I think Blue Velvet is the most wtf film going, though. Just, why :messenger_tears_of_joy:
 
Has there been an agreed upon conclusion why movies are either...

Grey/Brown washed - appeal to intellectuals? (Slow Horses, Digger)

Oversaturated - appeal to the low IQ masses? (The Masked Singer, John Cena movies)

Has anyone in film talked about this?
