Hey guys. I’m facing a dilemma. I want to buy a good hdd player (say around 20-30 gigs). Now I know the newly released ipod photo 2 (30 gigs) is a good choice but an FM tuner and built in (good quality) voice recorder are also musts for me. Any ideas?

thanx. :)

I'm eye-ing the Iriver H10 - 20 GB myself. Great audio quality, killer looks, colour screen, FM-radio, recorder and all the other stuff you come to expect from new DAP's (oh yeah, reported 16-hour battery life)

It's in 4 different colour-schemes and $299

I have an iRiverH320. Purely as a DAP, it could be better. However it has a color screen, picture support, requires NO DRIVERS OR SOFTWARE to work with your computer, has a internal mic for voice recording, has line in recording support, if you flash the bios it can support video playback as well, and has support for most audio file types. Only problem is the interface is kinda meh(it's not bad...just not great), and the sound isn't QUITE up to the levels of the top sounding ones(creative and rio). It's also slightly thicker than an Ipod. I beleive it goes for either 300, or 350. Best buy was trying to get all theirs out of stock awhile back, so I got mine really cheap (about 250 if IIRC, but it ended up being free because my other DAP (Rio Karma) died while it was under warranty.

How do the creatives and irivers sync with your PC? Are they dumb USB devices, or do they work as proper 2-way sync MTP devices?

Thats a big benefit of ipod/itunes, you can sync play counts, ratings etc both ways.

Also, you can get a voice recorder and FM Radio add ons for ipod. Not ideal but OK if you won't use them all the time.

The H320 shows up as a hard drive when plugged into USB 2.0 on WinXP and 2000, but if you're transfering DRM wma's, it has to use the USB 1.1 port on the player. The H10 doesn't have that particular limitation, but it can only do drag-and-drop on WinXP only.

BTW, I found this ridiculous sale via fatwallet earlier, but I can't take the plunge, but someone else might appreciate this:

It's sweet, but it might have some issues playing wma's (which is the other reason besides I can't afford it that I haven't pulled the trigger), and it doesn't have any games (despite what's on the box), but still, for that price...

For me, WMP is still pretty limited in the way it handles syncing to USB mass storage. Its not bad if you can copy your entire collection across, but if you have a flash player its difficult to shuffle your collection up.

It needs slightly more flexible smart playlists, then it'd be there. Hopefully there'll be an update soon.

OMG I was just going to creat a topic about how happy I am with the new HDD MP3 player I just got today. It is AMAZING. I am so happy.

It is the iAudio M3 by COWON. Don`t let the seemingly "no name" about this player through you. I saw it in an electronics store yesterday and I thought was this looks cool.

It was only YEN 29800, and has 20GB.
It has a built in mic. (for recording voice or what ever up to 128Kps)
It has a built in FM tuner. (you can record FM radio to MP3 up to 320kps as you listen)
It has a line in for recording any analog audio (up to 320Kps)
It has a great 6 line display that shows everything, and I mean it.
It can double as a portable HDD.
File transfer from PC to PLAYER is just a simple drag and drop. "NO SPECIAL SOFTWARE NEEDED"
Nice audio enhancing features, and equalizer.
14 hour battery life (2 hours to recharge full)
Firmware upgradeable.

I must say I just got this thing home and it is amazingly great. Music quality is amazing.
Just read the reivew at this site it will give you ALL the answers. Trust me you will be happy.

NOTE: the review is for the iAudio M3l. The only difference between the M3 and the M3l is the "l" means long battery.
The M3 is 14 hour battery.
The M3l is 34 hour battery.
Everything else between these two players is 100% the same.

EDIT: oh yea the M3 is also smaller then the M3l. Also these players support MP3, WMA, OGG, ASF, WAV, FLAC and WinAMP playlists.

the iriver h20 was very recently on sale at best buy. it's small, looks great, works decently well. may be able to find one for around 250 on the ebay runoffs.

otherwise, what features are you looking for/how will you use it, etc.

rio need to hurry up and release an updated karma

The least they could do is provide some support for the current Karma till they release a new version. The last firmware update was over a year ago and there are practically zero accessories for it.

Wow, just what we needed, another moaner.

*points to the other threads not titled "mp3 player buying help"*

Why come in here when you know what it will be, just to post that it is what you thought?

There hasn't been one for a little while, and new things do come out you know.

Yep. You're right. It's been like a week since we had one of these threads, and there have been dozens of new players released in that time period.

I'm sure its more than a week. There was a time before E3 when there was an ipod thread every day or two. But its been a little while.

Still, seems odd to go into a clearly labled thread simply to say that similar threads have existed in the past.

You're right. Sorry. It's been 10 days.

It's pretty standard GAF procedure to point out the search function on a lot of these threads that repeat.

Edit: Still, if it makes you feel better, I'll contribute to the threat. Buy the Rio Karma. Best DAP out there. Plays a ton of formats, including Ogg and FLAC, has gapless playback, and can be found on the cheap.

The Dell DJ is a pretty good buy. My friend has that. I myself had a 20gb archos jukebox for more than 3 years already ($299 in 2002), and in 2003 I opened it and switched it for a 60 gig hard drive. A little bulky but still works great.
