Mr Driller 2 (GBA) or Mr Driller (DS)?

I picked up a DS recently, and was wondering which of the these 2 Driller games is better? I remember reading about that game mode that was taken out of the US release of the DS version, but don't remember hearing much about the GBA one. If I only get one, which one should I get? Also, it'd be for single player only most likely.

get the ds one if you can get you hands on a euro version. The dristone mode is quite good, your air depletes by 1 each time you drill and you pick up "dristones" along the way. These give you things like air + 10, climb 2 blocks instead of 1, destroy surrounding blocks etc.

It's tricky and fun. I don't think driller 2 offered more than ds from memory, DS second screen just shows you further up the stack, not all that useful and touch screen is pointless (but available).

In all nothing really makes it ds unique, but it displays over 2 screens instead of 1, if you were going to play your GBA game on the DS, might as well get the ds version. the ds EURO version.

The hell?

So aside from the Drillstone mode on the Euro/Jpn versions and the mostly useless 2nd screen on the DS, there's no real difference between the US versions of 2 and DS?

Get Mr Driller Ace for GBA instead.

This is basically the correct answer. Driller 2's crazy old (Japanese launch title old) and the US version of Driller DS is crippled. Driller Ace will love you longer if you can stomach the kana.

I hadn't even thought to check up on the Euro version of Driller DS to see if it included everything the US version lacked. I'm half tempted to pick it up just to finally see a Dristone mode in english, but jesus christmas man I don't think I can hack buying the same game 3 times. Hometek really laid a sour one on me. :(

I'll look into Ace then, Kana's not a problem for me. Does it have some kind of Drillstone mode or something better I'm assuming then?

It has "Pacteria Mode," which is basically Drillstone mode, only the levels are all named after classic Namco games and the story has full voice! Cause Driller Ace is the bomb. If you can read kana, then this is SUPER definitely the one to get.

EDIT: As an aside, I find Ace MUCH easier to play than DS because of the larger size of the on-screen blocks. The "tate" mode in the DS version never really helped me much, but then my stupid monkey brain has trouble looking at two screens at once. Ace has a better interface and presentation ... and if you ever get GC's Mr. Driller Drillland (AND YOU SHOULD), it links up to exchange mileage and improve the Pacteria Parade!

Both Driller Ace and JP Driller DS have Dristone modes, but Ace's is actually tied to both a storyline and a simple creature raising sim (about as complex as Sonic Adventure's, but far better because you can make your pacteria look like Klonoa, a taiko drum, Mappy, or a pile of poop) rather than trying to float free on its own right.

Ace also has a better single-player grand-prix mode against CPU characters -- the DS limits you to races against other live opponents, and the US version conspicuously lacks the single-cart multiplay option.

The only thing the DS has over the rest is Pressure mode, which honestly was a step backward compared to the advances and expansions DrillLand made. That and some extremely lazy touchscreen implementation (touch screen works for some main menus, but the pause menu doesn't respond, etc).

The series is just turning into a big mess, especially with Hometek releasing Driller 2 so late in the game and stripping features to get the DS version released near-launch (which it didn't anyway).

Put simply, DrillLand > Driller G > Ace > Driller DS if you get the JP or Euro version > Driller 2 > Driller DS US version > the myriad original Drillers

This reminds me, WHY THE HELL isn't Driller G a PSone Book yet?

Alrighty, sounds like I'll look into picking up Ace then (I know Drill Land is awesome, but I'm looking for a portable one atm), thanks!
