Mr Driller or Ping Pals? Wifi wasted

I dont know anyone with a ds, so i've been sitting here typing to myself LOL ... sad, isn't it?

Mr. Driller is a lot of fun, but really really hard. I just got Ping Pals and I think it has the potential to be more fun than Mr. Driller as it seems to have a lot more to offer up front.

Um O K :lol

and another

In the latest EGM, they reviewed ping pals as the worst game ever next to the second lowest game they reviewed which was bedrock bowling. Ping pals got a 1.5/0/0.

(taken from another forum)

Am I the only one thinking Nintendo is gonna miss the boat again? Seems like alot of people still believe the Wifi in the DS will allow them to play against people over the net. Did they really need wifi for local connects when they bluetooth built in?

Taking Ping Pals as an example, they could of had a sleeper hit killer-app on their hands had they offered some form of online. Chatting, custom avatars, games, the kids eat that shit up. Instead they get to play guess the number from 1-10 or answer yes/no questions against a DS "chat-bot"

Considering I dropped over $300 in the past week on DS, and I own about 48 cube games this makes me wonder if Nintendo will ever "get it". That coupled with Iwata's comments this week regarding PSP make me wonder if they're connected with the western gamers at all.

Iwata said he doubts that PSP, which marks Sony's foray into handheld gaming, will attract new fans the way Nintendo DS has, wooing beginners, including young women who studies have shown usually dislike games.

The old-style formula for success of relying on technological innovations to deliver dazzling graphics simply doesn't work, Iwata said. Nintendo DS, which stands for "dual screen," has a wireless function and a touch-panel.

Sorry Mr Iwata, but you are wrong. I'm willing to bet it's the hardcore gamers that are buying up your DS's not young women or "beginners?". And yes, dazzling graphics alone don't sell in today's jaded market, but dazzling graphics along with gameplay to back it up certainly do sell ( Ico anyone? ).

And wireless? Well like I said above, the mistakes are already happening in that area not even 2 weeks after launch. Seriously, break open the piggy bank and setup some central servers like Live. Like that saying goes.."You have to spend money to make money". Time to take that to heart before it's game over.

Where are the stupid people that think wifi means over the internet? Nintendo never said over the internet, they said wireless multiplayer play. People are pissed because they don't know how to read a press release...to hell with them.

EOWIS?

Well, seeing as how that's a vague term I can understand where people could get that impression. Do you really need wifi to play with others in a 80ft range when the built-in bluetooth handles 30ft? I dunno maybe it's me, but for everyone complaining about the second screens usage in the current games (reviewers included), it seems like the wifi capability is a bigger issue.

What built in bluetooth? DS only has wi-fi and a proprietary wi-fi variant...

You need to research what WiFi is...LOL

And the DS doesn't have Bluetooth. Shit man you have no facts here.

You quoted 2 fools and come up with a conclusion based on incorrect info.

Far from junior buddy LOL back at ya. I've been on this forum for 5 years but since I don't post much, my name was wiped a few times when they changed forum software.

I know very well what Wifi is, my post is about the misconception and missed opportunity thus far as to what the built in Wifi offers.

As far as Bluetooth, it's been said many times that they are using a proprietary version (maybe not even).

They're not using Bluetooth. Look again.

They probably shouldn't let Reggie talk about it either, huh.

The PSP is so much more exciting than this thing.

Bluetooth, proprietary... either way the DS has 2 wireless protocals still, correct? I'm not seeing how this applies to my original post about the wasted wifi oppurtunity.

This forum is the first place on or offline I've heard anyone crying "Nintendo is misleading people with their wireless claims! IT CAN'T DO TEH INTERNET!"

Not exactly sure how much like BT that Nintendo's proprietary wireless protocol is but if it is like BT, then the value of having BT *and* Wifi is because BT requires less power but also doesn't transmit as far and has far lower bandwidth. The BT variant probably won't have the ability to get the DS online either. So they need the Wifi.

The DS will go online, simple as that, they wouldn't have wasted the money on a second form of wireless data transmission in WiFi if they were only going to use it for short range multiplayer.

The DS is a giant experiment for nintendo, they want to see how the online stuff works out before they "compromise" the Game Boy brand with it.

I expect to hear more in january, though I don't have anything to back that up with other than some hunches, the early games to use it being mario kart, advance wars and animal crossing. If they can get those launched here by march then the can go online with the DS just as the PSP makes it out here (assuming no delays on either and that Nintendo intends to make those its first online titles)

oh and ping pals looks like shit on a chip, WiFi would have made it an intersting piece of shit, but still shit :lol

For a while, i erroneously thought they included BT in the DS as well, which would make sense given the use of BT for alerting you of other DSers in your immediate area. But they've simply created a proprietary protocol to use with the 802.11b radio technology, which likely would do nothing for battery life unfortunately.

You could have been here 20 years - wrong is wrong. On both counts.

I guess xbox live was a wasted opportunity the first year of the console huh?

You have your facts wrong - post once you've figured it out.

well shit =/
There's not a wireless alerter feature either. i could've sworn it was on NoA's DS pages, but it's not anymore. According to an email a GAFer sent to NoA, it was removed due to time constraints. There's a few sites asking Nintendo to bring it back, possibly via a firmware update, but AFAIK, there's no way to update the DS firmware.

Why can't you just fucking wait a couple of months. Online play on the DS will come in one form or another.

according to the nintendo rep I spoke to there is a way to update the firmware, and they in fact plan too. but we will see if that is true or not soon enough.

You're a real piece of work... wrong is wrong lol. Care to enlighten me on what facts are wrong? You want to argue the bluetooth point? Talk about spin control, as I already stated it's not the point of the thread.

Thanks for that biting commentary Mr. Obvious. No wonder I hardly post. For those that can't or are too lazy to read what I posted.. I'm talking about the fact that there's no reason they couldn't have planned ahead for the launch.

For example, where's Wario Ware DS? Is there really that much to translate? Can't these companies hire a few people at 20k a year to translate DURING development? Instead we got 1 game from Nintendo at launch which is mostly a port. How about Band Brothers? Is there any confirmation on a US release for that yet? Understandbly that would take longer becuase of the music but whats the excuse with WW?

The dominant line of thinking is that Nintendo held back on 1st party product to give 3rd party games a little more chance to rack up sales. That plan seems to have backfired a bit though, as consumers were happy to just play old GBA games, the bundled Metroid demo or pick up only Mario 64 and avoid the lackluster 3rd party lineup all together.

Yep, it's already been said, but you're jumping the gun. It's not even been a month.

Interviews indicate we can expect online gaming on DS before Nintendo's home consoles, and Square Enix might have something in the works that uses it.

I expect that'll probably be the big March announcement, Nintendo's online solution for DS. Animal Crossing, Mario Kart & FFCC being the headlining apps for it's start next fall.

I already pointed out that not only does it not have Bluetooth but your assumptions about wasted opps are based on nothing.

Unless liked you ignored when I last posted it, that the xbox online capabilities were wasted in its first year and somehow stopped Live from being so cool when it launched. Where is the Spin control? You're just spouting phrases like "spin control" because you read them on the net. LOL

You sound like Veruca Salt at this point "I want and Oompa Loompa now!" - great things are on the way. You must have thought the PS2 was a lost cause in the forst year too. :lol
