MS: PS3 will help us sell 360s

point is the people that really want a PS3 aren't going to just say "Oh thats sold out, so i'll get a 360". If they wanted a 360 then they would've bought one before that anyway.

But people caught up in PS3 hype may turn around and see the 360 side by side with the PS3 and pick up a 360. Thats what he is getting at.

Considering PS3 sales will absolutley dwarf x360 sales in that period it will be impossible to see this theory in effect.

I doubt it. Sony wont ship millions at first. It will take awhile (See nearly every console launch). Only way I see is if Sony release PS3 in a slow time of year. If November 360 will outsell PS3 simply because of production.

I think that is more due to his fans and less uninformed "soccer moms" and "casuals". :p

What about this then:

"They're going to sell everything they make because the number won't be that big. In a weird way, all they're going to do is help us sell stuff, because they're going to drive consumers into stores who want to buy something and there's no PS2 there. And so they'll say, "Great. I'll take a Dreamcast." The reason I say that is we saw a lot of that happen around the Dreamcast launch, where we created a lot of demand and had a certain quantity. It helped PSOne sales."

What if Sony does like the US PSP launch and actually has their shit in gear?

Do you have ANY idea the fan following the Matrix has? Again, I think that game's success was more due to fans than anything else. :D

But that's the point that I'm trying to make. Casuals buy stuff with a name that they're interested in, and if they were well informed and saw reviews that proclaimed the game as shit, would many of them still buy it?

Yes. Look, dude, a fan is a fan is a fan and much different from a "casual", IMO.

But, people can be a fan of particular genres and IPs. I'm sure some people liked Xenogears and Xenosaga, heard/read Xenosaga II was trash... bought it anyway. Now, you wanna venture into sheer stupidity territory... that's another matter completely. :p

Sounds like some more wishful thinking from Microsoft. Seems that wishful thinking is the only thing they are good at.

yes, "wishful thinking" is definately all they are good at...

"idiotic posts" is definately all you are good at, also. or at least one of your many skills.

And do people really expect a price drop for the 360 this year?

Why is it so hard for people to believe this? The original xbox dropped $100 in 6 months, even NINTENDO who doesn't like to lose money on consoles, dropped the gamecube's price in only 6 months.

Yet the 360 dropping it's price(which starts at a higher point than last gen) in a year seems unfathomable.

If they don't get their crap together and are able to mass produce these things without any manufacturing setbacks and are able cut the operational cost, the price drop isn't going to happen. Unless if it is one of their goals lose even more money by dropping the price.

They had to drop their price because Sony dropped their price. The PS2 was 2 years old at that time. That was a special circumstance that shouldn't be used for future predictions.

MS is having their own production problems and are already losing enough money per console, they are not going to drop the price until the believe they absolutely have to. Unless Sony announces that the PS3 will launch at $299, the chances of the 360 dropping its price this year is very, very slim.

I wasn't trying to say they WILL drop their price. It depends on a lot of factors such as how well the console is selling and competitor pricing. I'm just pointing out that's it's possible. Also, we have no idea how much MS is currently losing per console. Personally, I think a price drop for holiday '06 is likely unless they are still selling out what they can produce.

I forsee a parallel involving a bar, last call, beer goggles and some fat ass sitting alone on a bar stool.

Fair enough. There are some who are holding out hope for a price drop this summer and that's an idea that deserves to be laughed at. Holiday '06 would be the first time-frame that I would consider a price-drop possible, but even then I find it unlikely. Sony is almost certain to have their own production problem, so unless Sony launches really strong, I don't see a price drop helping much.

I've read the rest of the interview and I found it to be a rather soft one. They let him mention the tie-ratio but then never touch on the hardware decriperancy (sp?) between the sources. I suppose that should be expected though.

I found his responce to Nintendo to be very strange. It wasn't the usual arrogant responce, we've come to expect. This time it just sounded shortsighted. How can they say that they're a different market with the Virtual Console vs XBLA, the obvious attraction that the Revmote will have to the PC market (which makes up the core of the Xbox fanbase), and the creation of NWC? These are all key-areas in MS' plan. They should probably be more concerned with Nintendo than they are with Sony.

My take:

If they were selling tons of consoles now i think it would be more likely, but unless they have a decent install base to make money off of through software sales, i can't see them dropping the price, destroying their bottm line. Of coruse is Ms takes the same approach as the Xbox and loses tons of money, anything is possible

If the ps3 is $400 they will probably not drop the price, if it's $500 they will surely not drop the price. If it's $300 (a miracle) they will have to drop the price, and probably never sell another console, unless Sony bankrupts themselves with that $300 pricepoint.

This holiday ps3 will sell out, and MS will have to battle Nintendo's super cheap console. So they won't be able to match Nintendo's price, and the ps3 will sell out no matter what, so why drop the price?

That MS man is talking like console hardware was in "impulse buy" territory.

My income level tells me otherwise. We are not talking about going to a shop looking for a certain dvd, just to notice that it's not available and walking away with some other film that you also wanted.

I don't think he's saying that MS is relying on PS3 shortages alone to sell the X360 although it will be a factor. With the right pricing and selection of games, the X360 may benefit enormously from any PS3 supply shortages.

His statement is correct if there is a shortage of ps3s. There is nothing shocking here.

i beg to differ.

people wouldnt buy core packs when they were waiting for premium packs.. why the heck would they buy an older console for the same money? :D

sounds like wishful thinking to me, i don't think i would ever just buy something else because the console i wanted wasn't in stock.

Why would they drop the price? The Xbox360 is still not running on a profit, and if they drop the price they will lose even more $. Bill = rich, that doesn't mean the Xbox department can lose infinite money.

That's almost exactly what I was going to say after reading the first post. I lol'd.

Hmmm, no, if people can't buy the PS3 they will get the Rev which will be seen as newer hardware and also cheaper, because people tend to buy the newest toys over the ones that had been out for a year.

Those you say are tech lovers, small proportion of sales to average joe 6pack gamer who go for the..... games?

I'm sure someone looking for a PS3 is going to buy a Revolution instead. Heck, the experience would be so different that they'd be better off just buying nothing. (not saying the Rev is bad, just that it's not what they were looking for)

Anyway, this comment is stupid and makes the 360 seem like a second-rate console, which of course it's not.

so people who have made the conscience decision to NOT by a 360 for a year will sudenly buy one cause the console they were waiting for is out of stock?

ok.

This guy is a complete idiot.

Sure they might sell a couple of thousand systems in this way, at the goddamn most.

I really can't believe he said that. This is horrible press for the 360.

He is also assuming the PS3 launch will be as horrible as the 360, which may or may not be the case.

On the flipside, the 360 will help sell PS3s.
After launch, people will go into stores for a 360, see it sold out as usual, and grab a PS3.

The majority wont camp out with SolidSnakeX and his friends, they dont really care about the console war.
- X360 is available NOW
- X360 has some great games NOW
- X360 cost 100$-200$ less than PS3
- Sony doesn't have a lot of exclusives left.
One factor is not enough to influence sales, but 1+1=3 in this case.

You're an idiot.

Xbox360 and PS3 are comparable systems, so I would think that general public (not the ones who explicitly look for PS3s) are gonna say," You don't have PS3? Let me just get the Xbox360 then. I gotta get my kids something."

Sounds reasonable to me.

Both the PS3 and 360 will sell whatever they can get in stores next Fall. That is inevitable. As for getting the kids something, if the Nintendo machine is significantly cheaper and has some good software, parents will buy it up. Parents are concerned with price. Gamers, on the other hand, are a little more picky.

Having worked retail during the holidays you'd be surprised. It really does depend... if folks come in looking for a specific unit they will tend to stick to looking for that. There are of course folks who will take anything during the holidays but there's actually pretty balanced mixed between the two.

I haven't read the thread. But is it the normal GAF 'any positive opinion of the 360 is shot down as being unrealistic and the PS3 will rule the universe' talk?
