Former world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali is gravely ill and near death, according to multiple published reports. The news comes from Ali's brother, Rahman Ali.

Born Cassius Clay, the 71-year-old Muhammad Ali can no loner speak according to his brother and "could die within days," he told The (London) Sun. "“My brother can’t speak—he doesn’t recognize me. He’s in a bad way. He’s very sick.

"He told me before he got really bad that he's in no pain. He grabbed my arm and whispered 'Rah, I've achieved everything I've ever wanted to accomplish. Don't cry for me, I'm in no pain.' It's best he goes now. The longer he goes on, so does his suffering and misery," Rahman Ali told The Sun.

Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Ky., and went on to become the heavyweight champion with a stunning knockout of Sonny Liston in 1964. That year, Ali joined the Nation of Islam (he was originally named Cassius X) before being named Muhammad Ali.

In 1967, Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. armed forces. He was convicted of draft evasion and was banned from boxing for three years.

Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984.

I never thought of losing, but now that it' s happened, the only thing is to do it right. That's my obligation to all the people who believe in me. We all have to take defeats in life.

Man...so sad. A true legend.

Small consolation is his quote, though. He's definitely accomplished a lot in his time.

I knew this day was coming soon. I'm sad, but have been preparing for it.

Wow. End of an era. Terms like "icon" and "legend" get thrown around a lot today, but few people deserve it more than him. Truly a pioneer and great man.

He looked extremly frail at last years Olympics. Even thought he was at the Olympics opening ceremony for Atlanta (?), it was nice to see him again.

he's suffering from an awful disease, so if these words to his brother are true and he's in peace with himself: let him go in said peace.

We are lucky to have had Ali as long as we have had him, all things considered. Human legend. Will live on forever.
