Musicals are pretty dope

200.gif

Hamilton is great, Little Shop of Horrors is great, Producers is great.

I was never into them until I saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. The quality of the whole thing is just so damn high; they pour some serious passion into it and you can tell

No mention of Grease ? For shame.
I do like some musicals (even sometimes love them, see above), but it's really hit or miss for me. Either the music and storytelling take me right into the show (Grease, Singing in the Rain, Moulin Rouge, My Fair Lady), or they just bore me to death (Chicago, West Side Story,...). I mostly dislike singing parts in regular movies though (like most Disney movies)

I love that you guys love them, but I can only tolerate them in small doses. I’ve never minded when TV shows, for example, find some wacky reason to put on a musical (Buffy’s was so good), and actually really enjoy it... but a whole two hour story like that? Nope.

I like theater in general. For musical plays, I think I’ve watched only The Sound of Music and Mamma Mia. I’ve also watched some film adaptations (except for Cats). Hairspray was a good one.
Some years ago, someone in my family would just randomly sing My Favorite Things or Do-Re-Mi randomly.

Back in 2001 I loved Moulin Rouge. But I tried watching it again and it gave me a headache. The music and acting are fantastic still, but man the editing. It has some of the sloppiest editing I've ever seen. It's like "dude, chill out". I guess they were trying to make it breakneck and hectic. But it comes across as ADHD

I saw there was an official movie of Hamilton, anyone seen it?

There was so much hype for it at the time even Larry David put it in his show.

Best musicals were made in the 30s-50s. It wasn't a nostalgic medium back then. They actually had real dancers instead of actors trying to dance and they were mainstream and full of energy. Particularly a bunch of pre-code ones are just incredible. Some good ones were made in 60s-70s. But after that it's all crap.

Can't say I'm a fan, but there are exceptions - Book of Mormon and Jersey Boys were both entertaining, but for the most part, if you're breaking into song to tell me how you feel, I'm out.

Most I've seen I wasn't impressed. I did enjoy Greatest Showman though. Also does the new Aladdin count?

A play, but Wicked was fun, too, when I saw it while visiting London in 2013.

I see you have good taste sir. May I add a few of my favorites:

Swing Time:

Stormy Weather (colorized):

Singing in the Rain:

Back then those guys could do it all... it was the golden age, truly. I haven't kept up with musicals in the past decade but what I enjoyed from the prior decade :

Chicago:

Burlesque:

Ray:

Gotta agree with some of the others: the best musicals are from the golden age of film and featured real singers and dancers. A few that jump to mind are An American in Paris, Singing in the Rain, Stormy Weather, Seven Brides, Top Hat, White Christmas, etc. Been a few years since I've seen them so not sure if I'd like them as much today, but I remember at the time I really dug these. Oh, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was a pretty fun musical comedy.
