I just bought (but haven't yet installed) an Audigy 2 ZX. I was thinking of maybe getting the platinum because the MIDI port in the front would be a tad more convenient, and that it has optical out which I can hook up to an old amp I have for the headphones.

I'm just wondering if there's anything else I'm not factoring in that would justify in paying over $100 in the difference in price.

I'm really looking at a cheap card...I can't see much reason to pay $100 more, and not go to a mid-range sound card.

Any thoughts?

You should look into the E-MU 404, good cheap music production card with nice features and software. It's by the creative the creative company, but they use totally different(better) DACs than the soundblaster line. The price at a store like CompUSA, $ 100

I swear to God, that first post is strangely prescient. I Just got one of those cards and was also debating the platinum series. I decided it wasn't worth it because, honestly, I didn't care for it. I'm not even installing the midi connector. I'm just happy to have a surround sound card now. The dvd-a capability is a nice plus as well.

since I got the gamer version I got Halo and I'll be installing it later to watch my rig crash and burn.
