My computer is usually fast. Very fast. I was extremely nonchalant towards the price of my computer and virtually ordered the top of the line parts in each area. That was a year ago. I have a Dell XPS. If you need the specs, I'll give you them.

This is a family computer though. My parents and two sisters, in addition to me, also use it. We have four usernames - and therefore a lot of stuff on the computer. But I've checked and there still is tons of space left.

For about three days the computer has been going VERY slow.

When one person logs onto his name it's a little slower than normal. VirusScan takes a while to load up. But once everything is set, it runs fine.

However, when one logs off the signed on name and clicks another name, that name takes forever to load. While on the new name, programs will be very slow to load up and the name will sometimes freeze.

I've run Adaware. I've run Spybot. I've run VirusScan. There is very little room for spyware or viri so I doubt this is the problem.

I've done a "Disk Cleanup" and a "Disk Defrag" - but have seen no improvments.

Any suggestions? I'd like to get this thing to it's normal speed.

Also, how do I check the "System Resources" on WinXP?

Maybe its time to reformat and start anew? In the end....trying to figure out the problem takes more time than just starting new. heh

You can see the allocation of system resources by hitting ctrl-alt-delete and then clicking task manager. Then you can click on various tabs to see memory/CPU usage. If this doesn't work initially, you may have to turn off 'fast user switching' or 'welcome screen'.

Yeah it's not working. How do I turn off the "fast user switchting" or "welcome screen" ?

It doesn't work when I go to msconfig either.

Well if you know what you're doing you go into the registry and start deleting stuff. That's a pain in the ass though and you could easily delete something you need. Easiest way is to format and get a fresh start.

jv16 PowerTools and other registry fixers are great for registry. Also are you sure that your hdd has enough space? To disable Fast User Switching go to Start->Control Panel->Administrative tools->Services and Disable Fast User Switching. And restart.
