My dog has a limp :(

So basically, he was on a trip (my girlfriend came back first, and he came after her) at my in-laws, and he hurt his front leg playing. In the mornings, he'd be off it mostly, but after a few walks he was back to walking mostly normal. It didn't correct after a few days itself so we set up an appointment at the vet, but I'm freaking out.

They seem to think it's no big deal, because he can put pressure on it somewhat and whatever, but the area he hurt it is a little inflamed compared to his other leg. Should I wrap it? I put ice on it, and he doesn't seem to mind using it from time to time, but he doesn't like it being touched. Otherwise, he's happy and still in a good mood.

The appointment isn't till Monday, so I just wanna take care of him best I can until he can get it checked out. What do you recommend, PetGAF?

my dog had a limp and i thought she hurt herself playing and didnt take her to the vet. she ended up having cancer and dying.

either way, just make sure he doesnt go crazy on it. maybe if he lets you put a cold compress on the leg to and see how it is in a few hours.

My condolences.

We are only taking short walks and he's forbidden from hopping or jumping on anything.

Animals heal themselves. For better or worse. Hope for a simple sprain and she'll walk it off.

It's been a week, so I don't think it's a sprain. I'm hoping it doesn't go into surgery territory. Thankfully, we have pet insurance, but still.

Our dog seems to be in this position right now. Went from super energetic to barely being able to get up and walk. Already been to the vet, but don't know what it is yet

:( poor doggies

Don't worry. Vet will set it if needed, maybe a cast, definitely a steroid and muscle relaxer to heal it. Put it in cheese to make it easy.

Until then keep the little fella in his crate and just love on him extra. He'll be fine.

Last time my dog had a limp it was just that her asshole was stuffed up full of undigested bones. Soon as the problem was removed she began walking fine, oddly enough.

In either case, best of luck OP.

Doesn't seem like there's much to do in this case. I'd just wait for the appointment, and try not to encourage the dog to do anything that could make it worse, i.e. try to keep the dog contained somewhat so he's not going up and down stairs, or running around too much.

Make sure to have him tested for Lyme disease and the many associated tick diseases. This time of year it is incredibly prevalent and widespread.

Cant do much until the vet. Just dont take him on long walks and try to minimize him playing around, even if you have to "get mad" at him so he settles.

If he lets you put ice on it, do that. It can help but can't hurt.

Otherwise I'm no vet and can't help you but I'll hope your puppy gets well soon.

A limp is a very general symptom OP. Think about all the ways you can have your lower half hurt and the same can apply to a dog. Dogs also don't have as nuanced an understanding of injuries, so you aren't likely to get a 'push through the pain and walk on it anyway' type thing you would see when a person gets a minor leg injury.

Our dog's about 10 now and she's shown up with a limp every couple years or so. It's been everything from cuts on her feet, to her toenails being a tad too long and hurting, to a minor sprain, to bad indigestion. She's a longer dog and did end up having to have a hip replacement because of that, but given your dog's age I highly suspect that would not be the issue.

You've done the only thing you can do in this case and scheduled a vet appointment. Sure, the outcome could be something horrible, but there's not really a need to worry about that too much. In the scope of all things that could even possibly cause that symptom, the number of really serious issues are relatively small. Even if it does end up something serious, you can't make anything better by worrying yourself. So just know you've done the right thing and 9.9 times out of 10 it's going to be a really easy fix.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. When we got outside he wasn't limping as bad and was almost to his normal walk (still went slow though). I guess I don't remember having a sprain that lasted a week but then again the vet said that if it was outright broken he would put weight on it at all.

My dog chased some deer on Thanksgiving, was gone for like 45 minutes and came back with a limp. He ended up breaking his front leg in two places, requiring a splint and a soft cast for nearly two months. It healed beautifully and you'd never know it happened.

He was about a year and a half when this happened, and he just turned two. Definitely get it checked out but i wouldn't get too worked up about it just yet.

Growing up, our mini dachshund jumped off our 10 ft tall back porch and lost the ability to use his back legs for nearly two years before they gradually became usable for him again.

Overconfidence is one of the breeds weak points.

Not a dog, but my cat had a limp for about a week a while ago, and it was definitely because she missed jumping up on her tree and crashed (I heard it). 😂 Silly thing.

Left it for a couple days and she still didn't heal up so took her to the vet and they gave me some anti-inflammatory meds and a couple days later, she was all fine. :)

Good luck, your puppy will be fine. :)

Update for my doggo. Turns out it was just general swelling, and since he wasn't off it much until now, it didn't have a chance to go down. It might be lyme disease, but they doubt it. That's easily treatable.

And the cost wasn't so bad, either.

So thanks for all those words of encouragement, GAF. I hope all your puppers are safe and sound.

Really good to read that. My dog started limping last year and ended up dying about a month later. Keep watching her closely for anything weird.

Dogs in general have a hard time staying off an injured limb. When you notice a limp it can be beneficial to not get it excited and put weight on the injury. Real calm no playing around, wanting it to walk around, let it heal for a few days or until you speak to your vet.

He's two years old. And he's putting pressure on it so I don't think it's a break, but man I'm just worried.

Fingers crossed for you man, but hopefully it was just an injury. Plus, your dog is pretty young, so that's a major plus.

If your dog was 10 years old and was limping (and in my case, was a breed notorious for getting bad arthritis at the end of the life expectancy), well...
