My dog has runny poops

Great way to start the morning, right?

So since we changed his food to something richer, my dog's poops are runny, wet, and all around pudding-like. We took him to the vet, and he's fine, but apparently the food just makes him have wet shits.

Problem is, when he poops, it's like a mud puddle and hard to fucking clean up. People stare at my dog like, dude, what in the hell is wrong with you? Gras gets ruined, sidewalks have shitstains on them, and plants get coated.

I usually carry extra bottles of water to clean it up along with some paper towels, because my city has a rat problem, but man, there has to be a better way.

Supposed to change their diet gradually. If you just completely switched one to another he'll probably have an upset stomach until he adjusts.

I forgot to mention that we did the portioning thing and added it in gradually. And it's not every day that the poops are runny. Just frequent enough for me to have to play cleanup!

Gaf is the best place for poop advice. Pretty soon you'll be considering waxing that poophole.

I have no idea. Change the food back i guess

Clearly you haven't trained your dog adequately

Try eating the dog food and then doing a dry poop in front of the dog. If you do this frequently enough over two weeks the dog will learn.

My sisters dog used to shit super runny as well, it was like stinky, brown lava. I remember getting high with my roommate's boyfriend and he was legitimately concerned that if she shat in the bedroom with my sister she might die from the stink.

Dunno what caused her poop to solidify but the stink is still unreal, other dog is no problem but just that one dog... good lord it could be used as a bioweapon I'm sure.

Sounds like the food, man. But it's tough to tell with dogs. Can you switch him back?

Although it could just be that he gets over it in a few weeks or so

GAF, you really do have an answer for everything. Rice won't bloat him up or anything?

Holy shit what is this game changer?!?!

Nope, rice is the solution. Just make sure that once his shits are solid again, you slowly go back to regular dog food by mixing a little less rice into each time. Suddenly going from all rice back to all dog food could cause the runny shits again.

I don't know if it has any adverse effects on dogs, but a friend of mine deals with a cat that has the same issue. Their vet recommended fasting for 24 hours, and then mixing canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) with their food in order to add fiber.

Feed the dog some rice.

This, maybe with some cooked chicken without seasoning. This is what I was having to feed my elderly German Shepherd towards the end when his stomach couldn't handle the rich dog food. Even the food that was made especially for elderly dogs was too rich for him. Just make sure your dog is getting enough fluids too.

Good luck op, and if your dog makes a mess, I wouldn't care what other people think, as long as you're cleaning it up to the best of your ability, fuck em.

At most pet stores you can buy a can of pumpkin. When switching food for a dog you should add a spoonful of pumpkin and your dogs poops will be solid. My wife and I use it with our dogs food every other day. However, most people free feed their dogs which is awful and can make your dog overweight. We own a pug and when people see him they're baffled at him behind a "fit" dog and not overweight since most pugs their see weigh too much. We always suggest a feeding time for dogs at the same time frame every day.

Side note: stop feeding your dogs purina or pedigree or any of those other awful dog foods. If your dog is constantly itching, upset stomach, or has some other weird issue when they don't have fleas, it's most likely that awful food you're feeding it.

Edit 2: rice can work but it won't have as much nutrition as the pumpkin supplement.

Huh, I've never heard of feeding them pumpkin before. We usually just do what other have suggested, i.e. rice (usually with some chicken broth) if our dog has loose stool for more than a couple of days.

not sure how it works with runny poo, but i've seen a great technique utilized to clean up dog poo effortlessly, clean, and chic

walk around with a newspaper to read.
as your dog assumes the stance, place said newspaper under dropzone.
when dog finishes fold up the newspaper and find a receptacle to dispose of.

looks like you're just out for a stroll with your morning read and no visible poop baggie etc in sight.

Then leave the paper in a waiting room.

white rice will make the poops solid after a few meals. then give it a day or two to make sure things remain hard before gradually mixing the food with the rice until the rice is no longer needed.

Get some of this stuff from Amazon.

It's amazing.

this stuff works well. you can get a few packets at any vet which is all you should need.

Try adding some form of "gentle fibre" into it's diet. Canned pumpkin, cooked plain oatmeal, chop up some broccoli, cooked brown rice are the best/healthiest sources that canines can digest the best. (I'm not 100% sure on the broccoli one though... I've just never fed it to a dog that had problems with it.)

I Jackben nominate this post for the NeoGAF Gold Off-Topic Award for posting above and beyond the call of duty.

More like Call of Dooty. :U

When my dog had stomach problems, I tried the canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) and it worked great. Just put a tablespoon on a plate in the morning and a tablespoon in the evening and he was good to go after a day. I keep a can handy in case things go awry again.

I've found that most all dog bowel problems can be solved by added Pure Pumpkin to their food. It's only about $1 for a can, and it works magic. I just put a spoonful on his food, and the problem solves itself in a day or two.

Yep, canned pumpkin works great. Make sure to get just the plain pumpkin and not ones with sugar used for pies and stuff.
