This happened 4 years ago on his left knee.

Now this morning he tore his right knee, slipping on the hardwood floor.

My poor guy cannot catch a break.

FYI, this is expensive surgery, roughly 2000 dollars. Luckily he's a Lhasa apso so it's not that terrible.

This happened to a friend's dog and it's really common for the other leg to go out if one does. The surgery is actually pretty ingenious... have your vet explain it to you if they haven't already. Good luck and I hope your pup recovers easily!

Ugh, sorry to hear that OP. My pooch tore a muscle in his shoulder (whilst chasing a ball). He's high energy and quick as lightning - which probably explains the torn muscle - so that recovery phase was torture. Had to drop his protein intake and stuff. He had laser therapy (I think) and physio which aided recovery.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Just wanted to highlight the potential frustration for dogs. Good luck!

He had the surgery before and it was like he never got hurt. He's 12 now so we worry about his recovery

That sucks. One tear leading to another seems like a common thing.

I tore my right ACL a couple of years ago, and tore my left last year. Have trouble sitting or doing anything for long periods of time now.

Ended up losing my job because of it.

Happened to my lab 3-4 years ago. It sucks. But get the surgery if he's still young. Chances of a tear on the opposite leg are greatly increased, especially if the dog is overweight. My dog is a steady 10-15 pounds less than he was previously.
