Why is this happening, and how do I fix it? It's a generation 3 Ipod.

Try turning the hold button on and off.

Reset the iPod. I think you hold menu + the middle button for a few seconds.

Do a hard reset. Switch the hold button on/off, then hold the select+menu button down until the apple icon appears.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine. I fixed it by pressing the scroll wheel down firmly and apply some lateral pressure. turns out it was actually stuck in a depressed position. Might be worth a try.
