Can anyone suggest a good monitor at a reasonable price (I don't want to spend more than $400)? Should I go for a flat panel or a standard type?

When I first read this I thought you said My MOTHER died, any suggestions for a new one?

I was like man this kid is really in some serious denial, poor kid it still hasn't hit him yet.

Go for an LCD. CRT is dead!
The samsung 710n is very good especially for it's price, the only negative is that it does'nt have dvi.. but the picture quality is well beyond that of any crt anyway so who cares.

make that a thrid person who read it as 'mother died' instead of 'monitor died' :D how do you buy a new mother?

LCD monitors seem to be the way to go now a days. My last monitor was a CRT from Viewsonic and it was poor quality compaired to my previous CRT. I had to replace it twice before I just accepted the fact that CRTs don't have the same quality built into them as they did in the past.

heh I was thinking about getting a monitor and this thread showed up. A lot of good words for the Syncmaster 710n. I clicked that link thinking it's a $700+ monitor only to see $259.99. @_@

[Edit: looking at newegg, there are a lot of LCD monitors in this price range... I remember they used to be so much more expensive. ]

Looks hot too.

The quality can't be better than a CRT though?

LCDs are for wimps and guys named Leonardo who like to get in their convertible by hopping over the door.

You want a CRT. Get a 19" NEC FE991SB. SB-MODE r0x ur b0x3rZ!!!

Crts have much better viewing angles, but you aren't going to sit 120degrees from your monitor anyway so it doesn't really matter.

The picture quality is light years ahead on LCDs, i was viewing a friends proffesional series Viewsonic CRT and the picture was blurry as hell, before getting an lcd i was actually impressed by that viewsonic monitor.
The colours on LCDs are also in a league of their own compared to CRT.

When buying an LCD monitor always buy ones with a Pivot base though. The 710n has height adjust, swivel and some screen rotation crap.

Smegging smeg of a smeg!
I went from a Viewsonic to the Syncmaster and the quality is amazingly different. Colors are much more vibrant, the picture is a lot sharper too. It plays games fine, which was my major concern.

Ha. Right after I hit the post topic button, I was frantically searching for a way to cancel the post because I thought that's what it looked like I had written.

Ugh! This guy is such a Leonardo.

You know studies show riding in convertibles make you go bald faster. It's true.

Oh dear Lord, I'm glad I wasn't the only one. Even the second time, I read it as such.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated

I own both an aperature-grille 17" CRT and the Samsung 710N. And while I can agree that the picture on the LCD is sharper (I should certainly hope so), colors and black levels are much more accurately represented on my CRT. There's a reason why most people in the graphical design field stick with CRTs. And while the 710N has a lovely 12ms response time, you can see some definite moire when things start moving really quick. For the price, it's a great LCD, no doubt about. Right now I'm kinda going with the best of both world in a dual display setup - I use my LCD for the Internet, general Windows stuff and the CRT for gaming and watching movies.

I've got another question. I found a similar monitor from Samsung, the SyncMaster 730B. After the rebate, it comes out to $279 (not including tax). The only differences I see is the 8ms response time and a DVI input. Can anyone tell me the advantage of the DVI input and whether I should go for this model instead of the 710N. Thanks.
