My Xbox went up in flames! (OT material)

I'm like a Hadouken, down-right Fierce!
So last night my roommates were using my Xbox to watch Chapelle Show (I put it in the living room as a common area 'dvd player') but then they rushed into my room saying that the machine was turning on and off randomly and there was smoke coming out from it. I told them not to use it and to just leave it alone. This morning I tried it out for myself and the fucking thing literally got red hot after 10 seconds (good thing I was able to get my Chapelle Show DVD out from it before it melted :p). So basically my xbox is DONE.

Now here's the question, should I be compensated for this? My roommates asked me to put the console in the living room, and I agreed, but I said that if it broke in any way (they spilled crap on it, someone busted a hole through it, etc.), then they would have to pay me.

I have to talk to my roommates about this tonight, and I hope for at least partial compensation for it in order to buy a new one, but I want full compensation because I'm a greedy bastard. :p

Strangely, I just traded in my first 2 Xbox's in (plus 14 games) towards a 3rd Xbox.

My First one, Launch model. It just died. CD Tray would not go all the way in, and would make WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRREDFUCK noises. It's sat in the closet for 2 years.

My Second one, was working fine, a model citizen. Until a day ago, the ethernet/Online portion stopped working. I check all the cables, router settings, even plug my Cable M straight into the Xbox, nothing worked. It could still play games, and I'm assuming movies, but right now, it's Madden season time, and that's all I've been into the last few days. Tough decision ahead!

So I traded this stuff in for 1 refurbished Xbox, small warranty, and $106 worth of credit:

Xbox+acc (the Xbox with the died Modem) $82.50
Broken beyond repair XBox $25
SW: KOTOR $5
Fable $14.50
Lumines $20
RE4 $15
Forza $24.50
Twisted Metal PSP $15
SSX Tricky Xbox $1
Ninja Gaiden $5
Midnight Club 3 $32.50
Madden 05 THE BIG $2.00
Halo 1 $3
NBA2K3 $0.50
Splinter Cell $0.75
Rallitsport $0.75

While I hated to depart from NBA2K3 for less than $0.85 cents, it had to be expunged, for the good of humanity.

If you're still in Japan, asking a Japanese citizen to reimburse you for doing you the favor of ridding you of an Xbox should be grounds for deportation and exile. :P

Actually, about 6 months ago (or more), MS sent out a warning that whoever bought an Xbox before a certain date can get a free replacement power cord from their website. Apparently some other people had their xboxes catch fire also because of the cord. Check around their website or email MS about it.

EDIT-I got mine, and it came quick in the mail too.

I went through the process to get a power cord, and not once, but TWICE, they sent me a power cord for somewhere in Europe.

It depends on how your roommate was treating it. If it just broke from normal use and wasn't abused I don't think you deserve compensation.

If you're buying another one you could ask for him to go in on it with you since he uses it too.

If they were just using it normally you can't really ask for compensation, it wasn't their fault. If it turns out they were misusing it in any way I would ask for full compensation.

I should sell my XBox and all of my games. I never play it, it just sits there.
That would pay for WoW for quite a long time :D :D :D
Hmm.

i bet that it was a faulty foxlink power supply!

I'll guarantee it was, my Xbox was doing similar things (smelling of smoke and turning on and off). Bit of solder on the power supply fixed it though. Is/was it a 1.0 with the foxlink supply?

My XBOX died a couple of days ago. I'm going to get a new one soon. I just replaced my PS2 not to long ago. My Gamecube, still going strong.

shouldn't microsoft be compensating you instead?

heh, I actually bothered to do this with my Japanese xbox and I discovered two things:

1. MS US site accepted the Japanese system so +1 MS. Hopefully the power cords are identical (should be).

2. Ever since I bought my BRAND NEW FACTORY SEALED JAPANESE XBOX in November 2004 I'd had this sneaking suspicion that it was a system that had been sitting in that box on the shelf since the Japanese launch, mainly because it had a thompson cd-tray. Well when I looked on the back to get the serial number I saw that the manufacture date was Dec 30, 2001

...

:lol

:lol ... Well, I guess that shouldn't be too surprising.

Power cord should work fine. Heck, all the xbox power cords including the replacement one fit great with Japanese PS2s ;)..
