Hopefully they get it right. There's alot of potential. What i would like to see is a normal phone design but a dpad above the screen. Play horizontally etc. This article makes it sounds like it will be more cosmetic for now but future hardware changes will happen. I think they should dump the current format and start afresh.

Nokia sees N-Gage redesigns, considering CDMA
By Ben Berkowitz, Reuters
SAN FRANCISCO — Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia is working on new designs for its N-Gage video gaming cell phone and is considering the potential for versions running on CDMA wireless networks, the head of its gaming business said Monday.

The company also said a price cut was in the works for the United States to spur sales of the N-Gage. Since its 2003 introduction, and even through the release of the new QD model in 2004, the N-Gage platform has suffered slow sales amid stinging criticism from the gaming community because of design flaws and quality of titles.

"We're looking at new colors, a new look and feel for the QD in the next few months," said Gerard Wiener, director and general manager of the games business program at Nokia, on the sidelines of the Game Developers Conference here.

Wiener also said new N-Gage designs were on the drawing board for the future, as the company fights to keep up with rapid advances in audio and video quality for mobile games.

Some of those advances have to do with faster and better wireless networks. Nokia's strength, and the N-Gage's standard to date, is the wireless networking platform known as GSM.

But in the United States and parts of Asia, a competing standard called CDMA dominates, and many GSM operators are upgrading their networks to a CDMA cousin called W-CDMA. Those networks will be faster than their GSM predecessors.

"There's no question addressing the CDMA market is something we'd like to be doing," Wiener said. But he was quick to add that Nokia is still debating whether to move toward the current high-speed CDMA networks in the United States and elsewhere or wait for W-CDMA to become more widespread.

"The jury is still out," he said.

A combination of factors hurt N-Gage from the start, especially in the United States: high prices, user-unfriendly design and relatively limited distribution. The QD model addressed some of those issues but still the N-Gage has sold just 1.5 million units to date worldwide.

"I think the breadth and scope of our retail offer was not what it needed to be to gain traction, especially in the United States," Wiener said. In future, he said, Nokia would work for tighter sales integration with the carriers.

"The timing is right for us to be pushing a little harder on the operator channel," he said.

But despite all the N-Gage's troubles Wiener pointed to some successes, including what he said was a very fast start to sales in China in the last few months.

"I don't want people, especially in my organization, to think we can't be proud of some of the things we've done," he said.

Thing is they could get a major chunk if things go right. The current platform is a joke however. They should dump it but i guess they want to make the most out of it. We'll see what they do but they are a company more than worth keeping an eye on.

If they're going to redo it, pick a new name. Who would buy the successor to the N-Gage? Gotta get a fresh start. There's too much bad history.

Why even bother?

Because mobile phone gaming, downloads, etc... are still a new profit stream waiting to be fully taken advantage of.

I don´t like the idea of mixing a cell phone with a handheld console.

But I like the idea of playing Cell Phone games in a handheld console.

how about "the cash in the bank"-excuse? Nokia has 15 billion, so they can have more than a one try...

And Gizmondo has a long road even to N-gage numbers, 1.5 million sold units. Anyway, mobile phone gaming is here to stay, from Nokia and others in the business. Like it or not.

why even bother now that PSP and DS are gonna be out....

the simple answer is that with PSP and DS, you have to conciously go out and buy a machine designed for games, then buy games for it.

With a mobile phone, you are likely to buy it for other reasons (mostly talking and messaging), and if it enables you to play games, then you might.

The argument is that by making games more accessible to more people, you sell more. Like the simple fact the most popular online games are things like bejeweled, and casino games. Played by women and middle-aged guys on their PCs because there are a lot of PCs out there.

Uh? Another "design" update and not hardware update? I was expecting something a little bit more exciting.

Meh, N-Gage probably won't be a "console" for much longer, I'd imagine they'd start including it as a platform in all their phones at some point.

Why did Deg get banned?
I was wondering the same thing.
He might have annoyed some people but I always felt he contributed a great deal.
What gives?

That's not a bad idea. What if they just made the d-pad the earphone too? Just have a screen over the d-pad to give access to the speaker. I guess it could work...

N-Gage was never hot technology to being with, but if it can get enough support with developers, it's got massive potential. Cell phones are the number one personal electronics device pretty much worldwide, and Nokia's at the top (IIRC) in terms of cell sales. The technology exists for N-Gage exists in a number of their handsets, they just need to devise standards (especially in terms of control) to make gaming easier and get some popular licenses to gain interest in the N-Gage Ready cells.

N-Gage is interesting to developers because it's a known platform, just like Xbox or PSP. You know what it can do, how it can be played etc... Compare this with the huge amount of different cell phones. I just hope Nokia's recent effort pays off and they finally release a good product soon (better tech also!).
