Namco gets rights to Peanuts license

See, if the deal was for the 1950/60s era Peanuts, I'd be excited.

What he said. Peanuts in the 50's and 60's was excellent. Regardless, I can't imagine many (any) interesting game ideas coming from the license. Peanuts doesn't exactly lend itself to action.

There's a topic. Games based off comic strips. Anyone? Garfield is all I can come up with. (No, Spiderman or Superman doesn't count. They were popularized as comic books first)

Calvin & Hobbes ... if it was possible, would be a good one.

A game based on Snoopy and the Red Baron could be fun. They could always do a Peanuts baseball game as well. Oh, and maybe a bike racing game.

Hell yeah. I got the first book in that retro collection they're releasing for Christmas...Peanuts started out DARK. I had no idea that the innocent comic of today started out so very twisted, which Chuck being such a little bastard. :D The art was a lot cooler then, too. (That has nothing to do with Shultz's stroke, the characters evolved over the years and I just happen to like the first version's best.)

Also, a Calvin Ball game would KICK ASS. I have NO idea how they would do that, though, as the rules were meant to be invented as the game went along.

Now to find that book and read more awesome Peanuts comics.

At E3... 2001, maybe, there was a Peanuts PS1 title in the Sony booth.

One level had you controlling snoopy as he ran , and Linus was swinging from the blanket in snoopy's mouth.

Another level was a sidescroller where you had to make charlie brown dodge obstacles...

Did this ever come out?

"Games based off comic strips."

Andy Capp
Garfield
Judge Dread
Nemesis the Warlock (?)
Tin Tin
Asterix
Punisher
etc etc...

Hopefully they'll make something more understandable than Kemco's take on it.
My god, did ANYONE ever get across that river?

Edit:
Don't forget the recently confirmed Bone!

Given all these recent threads concerning hatred of other posters and such, someone should really compile some sort of GAF flowchart, sorting all posters by their political, religious, gaming, humor, and regional characteristics. Why, with a little effort, we'd be able to properly hate people without even reading their posts! Think of the savings in time!

"But now I absolutely hate you"

ha ha

I STILL HATE PEANUTS THOUGH

Perhaps we just got all the shitty peanuts stuff in the UK that was blatantly unfunny/unclever/unenjoyable in every single way it could be?

I must admit, i've never seen and early strips - so perhaps i should. But until then ...

hmm.. just looking at stuff on the net, it would appear that basically, we just got the assy strips in the UK which weren't great.

Actually looks quite interesting.

will the game be as boring as f*ck in order to match the cartoon strip?
I'm not going to go all "OMFG YOU DON'T LIKE PEANUTS STOOPID" like everybody else, but I just have to ask: how can you possibly be "bored" by a 3 panel comic that takes about 10 seconds to read?

The constant airing of tremendously boring cartoons with Woodstock probably didn't help. The early strips are really good, but as it went on it got tired.

The strip (at least in the early years - I haven't read any of the post-70s stuff since I was a kid) is really very different from the whole "greeting card" impression many folks have of it. I dunno if I'd call it "dark", but it's not far off. Still has plenty of sappy strips, but a good number of them are more cute and charming than corny, and there's plenty of screwed up or downer stuff to balance it out.

In the States Fantagraphics is currently reprinting the entire series. Lovely hardcovers collecting 2 years in each volume. They started last year, and the third book, 1955-56, was just released. They're all very much worth buying, but if you're not nuts about Peanuts maybe the first volume isn't the best to go with, even if I think the strip was pretty strong from the get-go.

You're drunk. You were right the first time. The only comic less funny than Peanuts is Family Circus....well, that and Ziggy.
Oy. What would you hold up as the pinnacle of the funnies then?

And I'd say Garfield is far more offensive than any of the strips mentioned, sans Cathy, with the Boondocks not far behind. I find the concept and character designs of Momma strangely upsetting, which makes it a truly terrible comic I almost enjoy reading. The Wizard of Id is pretty awesomely bad, too.

I could see a shooter versus the Red Baron. But it'll probably be a side scroller like Popeye. I wouldn't mind seeing a good Peanuts game (I remember when I was little, drawing up plans for a Peanuts RPG) What's with Namco and reviving all these ancient franchises though?

This is no accident-- Schulz deliberately "niced up" the strip in the early 70's. He wasn't happy about ann the cynicism he was putting out. Which is a real, real shame, becuase up until then, Peanuts was one of the funniest strips ever. It could still be good on occasion afterwards, but usually wasn't.

Nothing translates an actionless comic that is rife with depressing psychological allegory like a bright collect-a-thon platformer.

Well, there was actually a Peanuts game for the Super Famicom that Nintendo themselves were involved with in one way or another (actually published by a different company). It was a cute adventure where you controlled Woodstock, who indirectly directed Snoopy around as he met characters and reenacted well-known scenes from the comics. Really well done, and if Namco's doing something like that I'd be all for it.

Wow, I had no idea there was a conscious decision to brighten it up. Or maybe I did and forgot, which is highly likely with me. I figured he just got older and sappier.

I remember playing the hell outta that Snoopy Game & Watch as a kid. The color Panorama one, where you hop around with a hammer bashing notes from Schroeder's piano. I'd kinda like to play that again. Maybe it's in the house somewhere. Orrr I could buy a boxed one on ebay for $500. Whatta deal.

I think this is great business for Namco. Sure its not the biggest cultural phenomenon in the world but they can get something out of it. After all, they must have paid peanuts for the license...

Snoopy Concert? Fun game, though I can't navigate some of the menus.
