Suh-weet.
Now, all they need to do is release it in Gunmetal Aluminum (rather than acrylic plastic/chrome)

Wow that looks really nice. its my B-day coming up and I might have decided one of my presents :D

Thanks for the pics; that's my same cell phone at the moment, so that's rather useful. Going to set foot in the Apple store tomorrow just to play with it.

And for anyone who wants to read a nice little interview with Jonathan Ive, the designer of the iPods (Mac Mini, G3 Cube, PowerBooks, iMacs, eMac, etc), click here.

I remember seeing some kind of durability test online, and it took a while to break the thing--they were tossing it out of windows, dropping things on it, etc.

Is it durable?

I could definately see myself breaking it.

IS the surface durable? No- the finish makes surface scratches inevitable. Mine is already quite scratched- I have no idea how.

Could you break it? Im sure I could voluntarily snap it in half with probably 10% of the effort Id need for an ipod.

IS it sturdy? The contruction feels very solid, in terms of internally. Its fragility goes hand in hand with its weight (which is almost non-existant).

But if it doesnt go through any major accidents, no reason why it would break.

I'm glad you guys liked the pics. I was going to eschew posting them, as everything older than 24rs here is considered obsolete. Seems extremely difficult to get a hold of in my city tho. My campus (30,000 students) got a shipment of 5, of which I got one from. Best Buy and futureshop told me they arent getting their 1st shipments for 1-2 months.

Ridiculous.

it does scratch way too easily.

I'm going to try some scratch remover, then try some PDA screen protectors cut to shape.

it didn't stop playing music until the finally tossed it up in the air like 40 feet (as hard as they could) and when it hit it finally stopped playing.

before that they dropped it out windows, moving cars, ran it over, etc and it still played music without a problem, though the screen finally gave up I believe after they tossed it out of the car at 50 mph.

long story short, unless you REALLY REALLY abuse this sucker (well beyond anything accidental) it will work just fine.

You must be thinking of Ars' review. And as for the durability of it, the thread in their forums by the authors suggest it's far more durable than most would give it credit for. Point in case:

Everyone here will be pleased to know that I pieced back together the nano (albeit totally non-functioning) and brought it to work with me to show a co-worker. In the process, I stuck it in my back pocket and have sat down on it at an angle several times, and (obviously) although the iPod itself no longer works, the case hasn't flexed at all. I've also put a lot of force on it with my hands trying to snap it in half and that effort seems to be pretty futile

Seems like a wonderful device really. As for the scratches, you can probably remove those minor scratches with some polishing. I believe Yoshi did a segment on FTS 4.0 (coincidentally, it's the only episode w/o a description), which you can check out here

Why did they put the headphone jack at the bottom?
because in most cases (arm band, lanyard) the headphone jack at the bottom makes sense. even in your pocket, IMHO having it upside down (so to speak) is more useful than right side up because when you pull it out it's already facing the right way.

personally this was one of the design choices I loved. The only way headphones on top is useful IMHO is a belt clip or cradle (though a new nano cradle could just as easily get it out the bottom now).

I'm actually afraid of owning one of those. Without a doubt I would break it accidentally or have it slip out of my pocket and not know that it was gone.

the second concern is definitely valid. the first though.,, it was thrown (literally thrown) out of a moving car at 20MPH and survived. I think sitting on it is pretty harmless. :P
