NAS' new album

From what I've heard it's going to be somewhat of a racial concept album, similar to Hip Hop is Dead. If this was some average rapper I'd be concerned, but I'm sure Nas has something to say.

yea, this is nas we're talking about. he doesn't need attention. he's been in the game long enough for the majority of rap fans to know who he is. i'm excited for this album, since his last one was pretty good for a "concept" album. still no illmatic/i am..., though.

This is going to make for some awkward Best Buy customer service phone calls.

"Do you have "Nigger" in?"
"WHY, YOU LITTLE BRAT. THIS MUST BE THE 90th FUCKIN' TIME."

It's seriously called nigger now? I thought he retracted that...

And it's coming out this year too? Man, the dude already stretches himself thin enough on records, it's barely been 12 months since Hip-Hop is Dead...

I thought HHID was average at best; while my first impressions were quite positive, I just couldn't listen to it after a few weeks. "New" Nas usually only goes as far as his production, and HHID featured some pretty weak beats. How does one of the best rappers ever have to rap over Chris Webber tracks?

I'm still hoping for a reunion with Premo :(

Nas is intelligent. Maybe the only one who could/should try something like this.

I mean REALLY, you know? A lot of my white friends are avid hip hop fans, and when they ask me "have you listened to NAS' new album yet?".

Me: Which one?
Them: You know......
Me:.....
Them: N-word
Me: The fuck did you just call me?

:lol I can't wait.

Why are Nas and Jay releasing these albums so quickly after their lasts ones?

Answer:

Lil Wayne. They're scared.

Carter 3: The Leak December 18th.

Carter 3 - biggest album of next year (Justin Timberlake, Kanye, Timbaland, Eminem).

wow :lol

But no, I'm happy to see a rapper cut the bullshit for once and take on the issue of language head on. I'm not bugged or offended by the use of "nigga" in rap music, but that "a" has essentially done nothing to recontextualize the word which it stems from in popular society. Instead, it's just created two words that start with "nigg" that are both stigmatized if not said by black people. It's time either shit or get off the pot.

Jeezy & Wayne are fun as hell to listen to. I make no claims that they're very intelligent, though. Slang yayo, get money, fuck bitches raps are fluffy and entertaining to listen to. I don't have to listen to El-P, who is significantly more intelligent than most of the "smart" rap name dropped on GAF constantly, all the time. I'd be more paranoid and angry than I am.

I'm sure I'll spin this album. I'm sure I'll blush like a girl losing her virginity on prom night when I buy it, though.
But I'm sure I'll spin Carter 3 more. ;)

Come on, guys. Let's not get into another rap argument until at least page 2, k? :'(

I just knew Lil Wayne fans were going to make the claim for he is the best

I have bought every Nas album that's ever came out (wasn't a huge Jay-Z fan, but I bought a couple of his CDs too).

I also got Lupe Fiasco last year, and the dude choked a bitch this year. Props Lupe (jk on the props, still kinda funny though) :lol

But do you guys doubt me when I say that's the reason Jay and Nas are dropping so soon? They usually have a drop off of like 3 years between CDs, releasing another CD with in a year is kinda ridiculous for these guys. You guys would be killing on Lil Wayne (or most anyone) if they did that.

I didn't say he's the best.

IMO, Nas is, but right now, Lil Wayne is releasing the hottest music.

My problem is that a lot of Wayne fans love to act like he's so far ahead of the pack in terms of lyrics, when in reality he's one of the worst. It's not like I only listen to MF DOOM and Pharoahe Monch either lol; I enjoy some TI everynow and then.

To be one of the greats, you've gotta have a classic. Nas has Illmatic, Jay has Reasonable Doubt*, Biggie has Ready to Die, Tupac has the 7 Day Theory, etc. For all Wayne's shit talking he doesn't have a classic album, or even a hot album. He doesn't have a list of classic songs like the other greats. Until he gets some, and starts saying something in his lyrics, I'm gonna continue to shake my head

*Illmatic>>>>>>>>>>>>Reasonable Doubt. And some would argue it's not a classic but eh, that's another thread for another sexless night

I don't really care when people drop. If Lil Wayne dropped another album tomorrow and next week I wouldn't dog him for anything but I am not really a fan of his music...

I am just waiting for my new 40water album

Uh...

1996: Reasonable Doubt
1997: Vol. 1... In My Lifetime
1998: Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life
1999: Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter
2000: The Dynasty: Roc La Familia
2001: The Blueprint
2002: The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse
2003: The Black Album

...Jay always drops an album every year. Even when he was "retired" he had the R. Kelly album in 2004 and the Linkin Park one in 2005. This is nothing new for Jay-Z.

While I'm not sure about what the other Weezy fans on the board think, I'm mostly interested in his delivery more than his content. His off-the-cuff bouncy flow is pretty rad. And occassionally he's got some great lines His mixtapes are totally immense, though, and way better than his studio output. Dedication 2 is just fantastic, and Da Drought 3 is one of the very best mixtapes this year (see also: Election Day by Slick Pulla [Gangsta Grillz <3] and The Bar Exam by Royce Da 5'9"). I have high hopes for his new record, but I know it probably won't be as awesome as his mixtapes.

Anyway, more rap this year is good! I'm also super excited for Foul Mouth Cringe because Roughneck Jihad is dope as hell.

Word to God, hon, I dont get down like that.

Hip Hop is Did didn't grow on me.. it did the opposite, whatever that is. Shriveled on me? :lol

The only tracks I will still listen to are the ones where he raps like a 50s dick and the one over unforgettable.

I really dug the album the first pass, but it didn't hold up to repeat listens.

I don't know if I am ready for another new Nas album. =/

I hope the album is actually good. Hip Hop is dead, was a failed concept. He is intelligent, but, that doesn't mean a thing if you can't deliver on the premise.

That was my exact response as well. While I still like Still Dreaming, Can't Forget About You, and a couple other tracks, everything else is pretty meh. The songs don't suck, they just fail to hit their mark. There's one with Kelis that sounds sooo phoned in and lazy, it just embodies the rest of the album. When you name your album HHID, you've gotta back it up because you're essentially hijacking the pulpit. Nas didn't do that

I really like the track that the album is named after.

The album is a good listen and was still better than a lot of stuff that came out at the same time, but won't go down as a classic..

Like all Nas albums, I'm willing to give it a chance.

Hip Hop is Dead was good. Not a classic, not great. Just good. I think with such a name, people expected another Illmatic or Stillmatic. With such another album name, people are going to expect Nas to be at his best. I hope he delivers.

I agree. I really liked HHID the first time I listened to it, but I feel like now, there are only 2-3 track on the album I can listen to and fully enjoy.

That is what I was thinking, Jay doesn't rest for long.

As far as Nas, Illmatic was his best album by far and that was when Sony made him the centerpiece of that year's releases. Crazy money was thrown at the production and promotion of that album and Nas hasn't been at that level since. This album title is a publicity stunt that could easily backfire.

Stillmatic is ever bit as good as Illmatic.

Love Nas, but I can't stand it when rappers title themselves/their albums with words/phrases that belong to the entire industry or group of people.

Hip Hop is Dead for eg., if it was a compilation album of many big names in rap, I could live with it, but for a solo album... hmm, just grates a bit. Ditto this one.

Nothing can be worse than The Game though, jesus, he might as well have called himself "The Rapper".

1. Lil' Wayne Is The G.O.A.T...Allegedly. Don't shoot the messenger. Remember when Lil' Weasel declared that he was better than Jay-Z earlier this year. It turns out that his opinion is shared by...you've guessed it, Birdman.

"Wayne never stopped," Birdman told the Miami Herald. "He take it like a professional; he never stop working and that's why he where he is. And besides that, the li'l n***a supergifted, extra-smart, talented like a mothafu**a. You know it's possible that they can have another Wayne come out, but what he 'bout to do is a miracle for us to see. We was fortunate to grow up on Tupac, but he died young. This sh*t Wayne got bigger than that. Bigger than Tupac, bigger than Biggie and Jay-Z. It's crazy!"

Now I've jokingly called Weasel the king of New York in the past, but Baby has obviously fallen on his head.

On another note, Weezy confirmed SOHH's suspicions when revealing that "Gossip" isn't directed at 50 Cent.

"I recorded that song in 2006," he told MTV. "I don't make records or say anything about people. I don't beef with people. Everybody knows that. ... My words are more important than you. I got kids listening to me. I got grown folk listening to me. I got intelligent people listening to me. I want the words I say to come across [as] important. I want you to relate those words to me, not some guy or some girl. If you hear about me beefing with somebody, you gonna hear about it when I'm in jail."

Nas lost

Why, because he was at a gathering with some white people?

This pic gets thrown around way too much as a way to discredit him.

Now if he actually looked like he was having fun there and doing jagerbombs with the two old guys or something, that would be a different story.

Sorry but Stillmatic is his best album, easily.

I don't see why he wants to reproduce a racist term to his own people.
But then again he might a be a sadistically inclined to put that as his album title, I guess he likes to be called that and get's some weird pleasure from it.

That's my abstract take on the album title change.

Speaking of new albums, have anyone listened to Jeru the Damajas album that was released recently? Is it any good?
