Damn Newegg for owning my soul...and debit card. Oh, and if you select the option, they also throw in five free DVD-Rs. Wippe!

DANG!! That is a good deal. I just waiting for Plextor to do a Dual Layer burner them I'm sold. I'm a HUGE fan of the Plextor Brand........

But that deal has my wallet itching....... :)

Yep, I like Plextor, but I blew my checking account load upon seeing this deal, and I've read good things about the drive. Dual-layer media is rediculously overpriced right now, but it'll go down, and it'll be nice to have a drive that supports it. I will have 1:1 movie backups one day, DAMMIT!

I just bought the predecessor, the ND-2510a just last month. It's an awesome drive. Still, I'm tempted to buy the 3500a, simply because I hear it's a better reader than the 2510a.

Its only 4X DVD+R9. I am not buying a DL drive until DL speed is at least 16x.

Yeah. I know that feeling. However 4X is faster than the 2.4X speeds for the first gen DL drives and the time saved is noticeable. Still it is a long time to complete a burn.

I would have jumped on this already if not for waiting for Plextor to finally announce their drive(s). Getting an itchy trigger finger from the waiting.

hehe, my dad said he got a "good deal" on a HP Media Center m495c computer and got it for me (didn't specify what a good deal was, but when I asked him $1500, he said lower, when I said $1300, he said lower and when I said $1000 he said lower, but wouldn't tell me the exact price).

fs_m495cb.jpg

Comes with everything pictured, everything being:

19" Flat Screen Moniter (f1903)
Wireless Keyboard + Mouse
Harman/Kardon 2.1 Speaker Set w/Sub
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
512 RAM DDR
200 GB HDD
Radeon 9200 (fine for me since I don't do computer gaming)
8x DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive
DVD-ROM drive
Windows XP Media Center

It has s-video and composite outlets and has the ability to record up to 155 hrs of TV, along with the ability to edit photos and movies.

Haven't hooked it up yet, but it seems pretty cool. I wanted a computer for my room really bad, and I was gonna get some cheapo $400-$500 barebones Dell, so I'm pretty happy with what I ended up with :D

Aside from faster speeds, are there any advantages this model has over 2510a? I haven't encountered any problems with reading. Reads all discs here fine for me. 2510a fireware upgradeable?

How long would it take to burn a dual layered disc at 4x?

I imagine twice as long as it'd take a single-layer one, but I'm not sure if there's different calculations between the two.

I also found the same 16x NEC in black even cheaper than newegg: www.bitsandparts.com

$80.00! Pretty good deal. No tax. They have some pretty good prices at that site too. Site only works with IE though. 1ne.

Supposedly it reads better but otherwise, yeah, the only official advantage is the faster speeds.

I had a lot of trouble with my 2510a reading disks when I first got it and flashed it to that Herrie's hacked firmware. I've sinced flashed it to the offical 2.16 and it's been able to read every disk its burned since then. I highly suspect that's why people say the 3500a is a better reader because the default firmware for the 3500a is nearly identical to the 2510a's 2.16 firmware.

Cool, but how's the shipping? It only cost me $4 to ship it standard FedEx, plus they threw in five free DVD-Rs. That and I really trust NewEgg.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I'm getting the new Pioneer 16x drive.

If only I could find some 16x media...

Damn that was quick, FedEx Express Saver got here in 1 day. I ordered the black one.

Guess I don't live too close to a NewEgg warehouse (or THE warehouse, whichever) as my shipping estimate on the cheapest shipping method has me estimated at early next week. But I want it NOW!!!

Never trust the shipping estimate time at newegg. It's way way faster! Everytime I order from NewEgg, it gets here in two days. If I look online, it will still say "You are at Step 2: Preparing shipment at warehouse" even though it's already at my house!

Aarrggh. I am so tempted to buy this but the only thing that bothers me is the small buffer size (2mb). I have a 4x single layer drive (Sony DRU-510A) and it has an 8mb buffer. That thing has never burned a single coaster and I've really put it through its paces. How reliable are these drives when it comes to that?

Even the Plextors have 2mb. Theoretically 8mb isn't enough buffer to burn a DVD either but that's assuming no HDD buffer assist and no buffer underrun protection.

When I'm not multitasking, I don't think the meter for the drive buffer has ever gone below 96%. When I do multitask and the HDD is churning, sometimes the buffer does go all the way to 0% but that doesn't result in a bad burn, just a longer one.

It's really not a concern anymore. It's not like the early CD-R days. If you are really worried, why bother getting a new drive if you're happy with the Sony?

Yeah, with burn-proofing technology the way it is, you don't really need anymore than a 2MB buffer. I've used a 4X DVD burner with a 2MB buffer for about a year and have never had a coaster due to buffer overflow, regardless of any of the stupid multitasking I was doing while burning. ;)

Seriously, who the hell has the money to blow on DVD9's? The fuckers are like 10-15 dollars a piece. Maybe in a year to a year and a half, dual layer media will be affordable. Until then, I'll stick with my new Plextor 712 (~$120 @ NewEgg + $30 mail-in rebate).

sweet prce, too bad it's a NEC :/

seriously, you're better off spending $20 more on the pioneer 108 which is a much better drive :D

Actually I've read the NEC has some bit-switching feature that the Pioneer lacks. Doesn't really mean much to me, but the drive has been getting good reviews and I'm sure it'll more than fulfill my needs...
